Chapter 3

Author: Little Tree
"Colin, send the rescue team now! We don't have a second to lose!" I kept it brief.

Colin went silent for a few seconds before finally responding, "Ashton, hang in there. I'm mobilizing a team to your location right now!"

His words took a bit of the edge off the tension.

But then, Enzo's thoughts echoed in my mind again.

"Dad, Mr. Palmer didn't take you seriously at all. He's just blowing you off. The underground gas lines are leaking. There's about to be a chain reaction of explosions. Tell everyone to run!"

His thoughts broke me into a cold sweat. I immediately yelled at everyone to run for their lives.

At first, people looked confused, but then the pungent, biting smell of gas hit the air.

On the other end of the line, Colin actually let out a scoff. "Ashton, how much are you paying these extras a day? They're really committing to the bit. Great acting."

I didn't have time to argue. I scooped up Enzo and bolted forward.

The survivors helped one another up, fleeing for their lives.

We had barely made it 40 feet when a deafening roar erupted behind us. A massive pillar of fire shot straight out of the pit.

Staring back at the living hell behind us, everyone broke into a cold sweat.

If we had been just one step slower, there wouldn't even be ashes left of us.

At the sound of the explosion, Colin fell silent. When he finally spoke, his voice was trembling. "Ashton? What the hell is going on over there? Where did those explosions come from?"

Before he could get an answer, hurried footsteps echoed on his end.

A second later, the duty room door was kicked open. "Colin Palmer! A major collapse just happened on the city highway! Why haven't you dispatched a rescue team yet?"

Seeing his supervisor storm in, Colin finally realized the gravity of the situation.

He shuddered with terror, then screamed into the phone, "Ashton, hang on… I-I'm sending the team right now!"

20 minutes later, sirens wailed in the distance. Colin arrived at the scene with the rescue squad.

Taking in the gruesome destruction and the traumatized survivors, he slapped himself hard across the face and dropped straight to his knees in front of me.

"Ashton, I am so sorry! It's all my fault for not believing you. I screwed up big time…"

Seeing how genuinely remorseful he was, I didn't hold it against him.

Colin also realized that now was not the time for self-blame. He immediately ordered the paramedics to treat the injured and directed the firefighters to contain the blaze.

When he caught sight of me covered in blood and grime, the guilt in his eyes deepened. "Ashton, don't move. I'll get someone to check your wounds right now."

I cut him off, urging him to take me straight to the hospital where Olivia was.

My injuries could wait, but her life couldn't.

We rushed to the hospital, where I tracked down the lead surgeon and signed the consent forms.

I thought we had made it just in time, but the doctor's expression remained grim. "Mr. Burke, the patient suffered 99 stab wounds, leading to multiple organ failure from internal bleeding. With our hospital's current resources, the best we can offer is a highly conservative surgery.

"To increase her chances, we need to bring in a top-tier medical team from out of town immediately. Otherwise, she won't survive the night."

Beside me, Colin suddenly snapped to attention. "Ashton, I'll call Elaine right now. I'll have her request a green channel and arrange a helicopter transfer immediately!"

Once the call connected, Colin frantically explained the situation.

I thought the problem was solved, but all we got was Elaine's ice-cold response over the speaker. "Colin, what did Ashton give you to make you lose your mind and lie for him?"

"Dad, did Grandma turn into a star in the sky?"That evening, Enzo looked up at the night sky and softly whispered his question in his mind.I stroked his hair. "Yeah, she became the brightest star up there, and she's always watching over us."A year later, I heard from an old classmate that Elaine had quit her job and gone to a remote mountain village to teach.Word was that she donated the last of her savings to the local school there. Aside from teaching, she spent every day caring for the left-behind children.Maybe this was her way of seeking redemption, or maybe she had finally realized what truly mattered in life. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.…Time flew by, and in a flash, Enzo turned five.On the anniversary of Olivia's death, I brought him back to our hometown to visit her grave.A bouquet of fresh lilies had already been placed before the tombstone. The granite was wiped spotlessly clean, with a few small, handmade gifts left beside it.I k

"Divorce agreement." My voice carried no emotion whatsoever.Elaine snapped her head up and looked at me in disbelief. "Ashton, you can't do this. My mom is gone. You're all I have left. How can you abandon me now too?""Elaine, it's not that I'm abandoning you. It's that you never truly chose me. We're done."My gaze was ice-cold, devoid of any feeling."Just sign it, and we'll be completely even from here on out."She took the papers with trembling hands. Her tears splattered onto the pages as she said, "I know. I know my stupidity caused all of this. I know I was wrong. B-But we still have Enzo… Ashton, please, just for the sake of our son, forgive me this once.""It's exactly because of Enzo that I'm leaving you. I can't let him have a mother like you," I said, hitting her with every syllable."Are you even fit to be a mother? Were you even fit to be your mom's daughter?"Those words completely broke Elaine. She slumped to the ground.Realizing that everything was truly p

Elaine cried until she could barely breathe. She curled up on the floor as she shook uncontrollably.Blood streamed from her gashed forehead, mixing with her tears and staining her collar red.But no matter how much she repented, no matter how harshly she punished herself, the mother who had always forgiven and loved her was never coming back.Eventually, the sheer trauma overcame Elaine, and she blacked out completely.By the time she woke up again, reality had finally sunk in.One moment she would be sobbing hysterically, and the next she would stare blankly at the ceiling, muttering endless apologies under her breath. It took a heavy dose of sedatives from the doctor just to get her to sleep.During her time in the hospital, Mom came to see her a few times.Watching the daughter-in-law she had once loved like her own blood reduced to this state, Mom felt a mix of heartbreak and profound disappointment."Elaine, how could you be so utterly blind? I gave you my whole heart al

"I called you the moment it happened, but what did you do? You didn't believe a single word I said!" I yelled.Elaine's pupils dilated instantly as the memories rushed back."The most twisted part is that she actually had a fighting chance. It was you! Her own flesh and blood, who personally cut off her last hope of survival!"Getting more worked up, I stormed over and grabbed Elaine by her collar."You were so convinced I was lying to you. You were so sure that it was my mom who was dying. It would have taken one phone call from you to save her, but you wouldn't even lift a finger. Remember this. You killed your mom. You're a murderer!"My words hit Elaine like a physical blow, freezing her in place. Her eyes went blank as she muttered, "No… that's not true…"But no matter how much she denied it out loud, deep down, she knew. When I first called her, she had been too busy comforting a weeping Dayton, who was threatening to kill himself. She hadn't absorbed a single word I said

"This doesn't make sense… Weren't you the one who got stabbed 99 times? How are you still standing here?" Elaine asked. She looked like she was seeing a ghost. Her legs gave out as she collapsed onto the floor.Mom frowned deeply at her words. "What are you talking about, Elaine? Ashton told me your mother was trying to stop a human trafficker at the park today and got stabbed 99 times. I took the very first train here the moment I heard."Anxious and worried, she rushed over to the doctor to ask for an update. The moment she learned that Olivia was gone, she sank heavily into a chair.Over the years, she and Olivia had grown as close as best friends. She never could have imagined that their get-together last month would be their final goodbye.Mom broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.Even with the truth staring her right in the face, Elaine refused to believe it."No, it's impossible. My mom can't be dead. Ashton! The one who got stabbed was supposed to be your mother! My mom i

Elaine continued, "Besides, do you think I can just open a green channel whenever I want? Stop wasting my time. I'm not wasting that clearance on his mother!"Her words made Colin catch his breath in disbelief. With a life on the line, she was actually choosing to stand by and do nothing."Elaine, what the hell are you talking about? The person who got stabbed 99 times is your own mother! You won't even save her? Are you even human?"Elaine let out a dismissive laugh. "That's Ashton's mother. What does she have to do with me? If his mom hadn't poked her nose into other people's business, would she have been stabbed so many times?"Ashton is honestly hilarious. Just because he can't stand me treating Dayton well, he makes up all these elaborate excuses. There's no way I'm humoring him."Just then, a nurse rushed out of the operating room, her voice frantic. "Have you contacted Ms. Russell? When can the outside medical team get here? The patient is already showing signs of heart fa
