My mother-in-law, Olivia Austin, stands out and performs a heroic deed, only to get stabbed 99 times by the human trafficker she's apprehended. Needless to say, she's in critical condition. On the way to the hospital, I'm about to inform my wife, Elaine Russell, when a voice interrupts me. "Don't call Mom!" I'm stunned, to say the least. Right now, the only other person besides me is my son, Enzo Burke, in the back seat. But he's only three months old! How can he possibly talk? The next thing I know, the voice rings out again. "Mom's male best friend's company has filed for bankruptcy, so he's threatening to kill himself right now. If Mom ditches him and goes to the hospital instead, he will definitely kill himself!" At that moment, Elaine's impatient voice drifts from the other end of the line. "Since your mom is already dying, no miracle in this world can save her. What else can I do? You might as well use the time to prepare her funeral right now! Stop pestering me already!" I feel my heart sink to the pits of my stomach. To think that Elaine actually thinks my mom is the one dying! "Dad, Grandma can't make it anymore. If anything were to happen to Mom's friend, she'd definitely kill both of us!" As I listen to Enzo's choked-up thoughts, I decide not to say anything. After ending the call, I caress Enzo's cheek with a smile. "Darling, from now on, you and I are the only ones in this family."

Chapter 1

The words had barely left my mouth when the ground violently shuddered.

Suddenly, the asphalt ahead caved in with a deafening roar.

I watched in horror as several cars plunged into the abyss.

Luckily, I slammed on the brakes just in time. My car teetered precariously on the edge.

One wrong move, Enzo and I would be blown to pieces.

"Dad, that was too close. I remember this road. It was built by Dayton's company. They had the exact same accident before because they cut corners."

His words jogged my memory. I had seen it on the news.

My wife's best friend, Dayton Harrell, had to pay millions of dollars in damages, which completely bankrupted his company.

With the car rocking on the brink and nothing but pitch-black darkness below, I knew I couldn't hesitate.

I grabbed Enzo, threw the door open, and leaped out.

The next second, my car plummeted into the deep void.

I was left dangling off the edge, desperately gripping a piece of rebar with one hand.

Below us, a deafening explosion echoed as flames shot into the sky.

Flying shrapnel sliced through my skin, leaving me bleeding heavily.

My arm was giving out, but my other arm kept a death grip on Enzo.

"Dad, I'm scared! Are we going to die? Just drop me, Dad. I don't want to hold you back!"

"No way! I'm not letting anything happen to you!" I roared through gritted teeth.

With a desperate heave, I tossed Enzo up onto solid ground.

Before my grip completely failed, I used every ounce of strength left to haul myself up over the edge.

Before I could even catch my breath, a second blast rocked the pit.

I threw myself over Enzo to shield him as the shockwave blasted us several feet back.

The back of my head slammed hard against the pavement. Blood gushed from the wound, and a wave of dizziness washed over me.

Behind us, the road kept collapsing, and screams echoed through the air.

Fighting the pain, I scooped Enzo up and stumbled away.

Once we tumbled over the guardrail into a relatively safe area, my legs gave out, and I collapsed.

I lay flat on my back, chest heaving. Every breath sent a jolt of agony through my battered body.

The lack of oxygen pushed me to the brink of passing out.

"Dad, the traffic is completely dead. We won't make it to the hospital to save Grandma…"

His tearful voice snapped me right back to reality.

Right. My mother-in-law, Olivia Austin, was still at the hospital.

Without my signature as family, they couldn't proceed with her critical surgery. Every second wasted brought her closer to death.

I pulled out my phone and dialed emergency services with trembling fingers.

Once connected, I quickly explained the situation and begged them to contact my wife, Elaine Russell, immediately.

There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by a slightly irritated male voice.
