Chapter 3

Author: Sandoo
"Two million."

There were gasps in the crowd.

I saw Sean's hand gripping the armrest. His knuckles had turned white.

Beside him, Kayla's expression had become extremely horrid.

"Sean, that man–"

Sean ignored her. He turned his head and looked at me.

His gaze was sharp enough to pierce straight through me.

"Do you like it?"

My entire body stiffened.

The two little ones inside me held their breath too.

This was a lose-lose situation.

If I said I liked it, Sean would think I was greedy and that I was working with Steve.

If I said I didn't like it, I would seem fake.

Caleb analyzed the situation quickly. 'Say that you're not worthy of it. Make it sound like you're beneath everyone else.'

I bit my lower lip and gently shook my head.

"It's too valuable." My voice was soft. It carried a hint of humility and fear.

"I-I'm just someone who's here to give you children. I'm not worthy of something this precious."

Sean's expression changed instantly.

The sharp suspicion in his eyes faded. Instead, something complicated appeared.

He lifted his hand and intended to ruffle my hair like he usually did, but I flinched.

His hand froze in midair.

Inside the auction venue, the price had already climbed to three million.

The mysterious bidder was now fighting against another buyer.

Sean's phone suddenly vibrated.

He glanced at it and immediately narrowed his eyes.

He stood up abruptly and grabbed my wrist before dragging me away.

The force was so strong that it almost crushed my bones.

"Sean, what are you doing?" I cried out in pain.

He didn't answer. He only dragged me through the crowd. Under everyone's shocked gaze, he shoved me into the car.

After we returned to the villa, he threw me onto the sofa.

"Talk. What is your relationship with Steve?" He asked through clenched jaws.

The pain brought tears to my eyes. My wrist was already red and swollen.

"I don't know him! I have no idea who he is!"

"You don't know him?" He sneered. He then tossed his phone in front of me.

There was a text message on the screen.

[I'm determined to get the hairpin. I'm also very interested in your woman.]

The sender was Steve.

My mind went blank.

This was a setup within a setup.

'Mommy, don't panic! This is a false accusation!' Lily shouted anxiously.

'He won't believe you.' Caleb's voice was cold. 'He only believes the evidence in front of him.'

Sean leaned forward. His hands pressed against the sofa on either side of me. His shadow completely covered me.

"Anna, didn't I warn you to behave?"

I could feel his breath against my face. It reeked of tobacco and rage.

"I gave you the best life possible, and this is how you repay me?"

"That's not true!" I screamed back through my tears. "I really don't know him! This must be Kayla! She's jealous because I'm carrying your children!"

Feeling desperate, I could only redirect the blame elsewhere.

"Kayla?" Sean looked like he had heard the funniest joke in the world.

"Why does she need to be jealous of you?"

Those words felt like a knife stabbing directly into my heart.

He was right. Who was I to say that?

I was nothing but a surrogate tool for bearing his children, and I could be replaced anytime.

How could I ever compare myself to the woman he truly loved?

A sense of sorrow filled my chest.

Just as I was about to break down crying, Caleb's voice came like a tranquilizer. 'Mommy, don't just cry! Look into his eyes. Use the most innocent expression possible! Cry like you depend on him. Make him feel like he's your only lifeline!'

I immediately looked up. Ignoring the pain in my wrist, I reached out with trembling fingers and grabbed his sleeve like I was holding onto the only piece of driftwood keeping me alive.

I looked at him. Tears welled up in my eyes. My voice turned hoarse. "Sean, I'm not afraid of you. I'm only afraid you'll misunderstand me. I'm afraid you won't want me anymore. You're all I have."

My reaction seemed to surprise Sean.

His rage calmed a little.

'Mommy, don't give up! Keep crying! Make him feel sorry for you!' Lily encouraged me.

I cried even harder. My entire body trembled.

"Sean, I only wanted to give birth to our children," I said through choked sobs.

"If you don't believe me, then let's just get rid of them."

After saying that, I closed my eyes.

I was gambling on how much Sean cared about our two children.

I could feel Sean's breath close to me.

I didn't know how much time had passed. Finally, he straightened up.

"Don't let me find out you're lying," he said before turning around and slamming the door shut.

I let out a sigh of relief, but the fear still lingered.

'Mommy, you were amazing!' Lily cheered inside my belly.

Caleb immediately rained on our parade. 'Don't celebrate just yet. He's only temporarily convinced. The listening device is still there. He'll monitor you twenty-four hours a day.'

I climbed off the sofa, walked into the bathroom, and turned on the faucet.

The loud sound of running water temporarily blocked the recording.

I stared at my pale face in the mirror. My eyes were swollen from crying. For a moment, I couldn't even recognize myself.

The next day, my legal team appeared in front of Sean. They brought a transfer authorization document personally signed by Steve. It wasn't a simple asset transfer agreement. It was the heart of Sean's entire business empire, the highest-level control transfer document for his offshore trust fund. When Sean saw the familiar emergency authorization code and the legal documents that would instantly dismantle his empire, he finally understood. He picked up his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a number. His voice was cold."Activate the Scorched-Earth plan."The voice on the other end, which belonged to his most loyal subordinate, sounded hesitant. "M-Mr. Freeman, the signal is unstable–"The call was disconnected. He immediately called the trusted aide he had planted inside the board, but a secretary's cold voice came through. "Sorry, he is currently in a meeting with Steve."The call was disconnected yet again. Finally, he called the bank manager in Ravendale, but all he he

Kayla was screaming accusations like a madwoman. Sean's expression turned extremely dark. Meanwhile, his grandpa looked furious."What exactly is going on?" Sean's grandpa slammed his cane against the ground."Grandpa, don't fall for her tricks!" Kayla immediately uttered. "It was Anna! She brought Steve here! They've been working together all along! They want to ruin the Freeman family's reputation!"Sean said nothing. He only stared at me.That gaze felt like it could tear me apart.I slowly opened my eyes. When I saw what was going on, I immediately struggled out of Steve's arms. I then ran over to Sean."Sean, trust me! I didn't do anything!" I cried desper

'So I'm just a surrogate tool?''Yes. More importantly, I'm downloading the emergency authorization code for his secret offshore trust fund right now. Oh no! Mommy, his system's highest-level security alarm has been triggered! He knows someone accessed his core data!'I felt a chill down my spine.'Don't worry. I erased the traces, but he'll definitely start investigating. He'll think Steve did it.'Even that tiny bit of affection I thought I had received was nothing more than my own fantasy.'Mommy, don't be sad,' Lily comforted me. 'We're going to make him pay!'Caleb had already devised a plan. 'Mommy, Sean's grandfather, the head of the Freeman family, will return from overseas next week for his birthday. He values family above all else. My heart skipped a beat.It was my old phone. He had opened my photo album. Inside were all the pictures I secretly took of him. There were photos of his side profile while he worked, his face while he slept, and the slight frown on his face while he ate. These photos were something I had prepared long ago.Sean looked through them one by one. His expression grew dark. Then he looked up at me. There was a complicated look in his eyes."You–"I looked like a thief caught red-handed. I ran over and tried to grab my phone back."Don't look!"He easily held me down before pulling me into his arms."Why did you take these?""I-I was afraid you would leave me someday. I wanted to keep something to remember you by," I lowered my head and said with a sob.He stayed silent for a long time.It was so long that I thought my lie had been exposed. But suddenly, he lowered his head and kissed me.This kiss still reminded me of his possessive and controlling nature, but there was also

He was slender. The outline of his side profile looked seven parts similar to Sean's, but he lacked Sean's arrogance and hostility. Instead, there was a gentleness to him.At first glance, I thought it was Sean. My heart started pounding. He turned around. A pair of eyes that felt like blades scanned me from head to toe."My informant told me that you were talking to yourself in the bathroom last night for five minutes. Were you discussing countermeasures with your little strategists?"My mind went completely blank. This was not part of the plan.'Mommy, things have changed.' Even Caleb's voice became more serious. 'He tracked us back. There's a signal jammer in this room.'My heart sank."What do you want?" I looked at him cautiously."Take down Sean. I can help you." Steve pushed a cup of freshly brewed coffee toward me. "But nothing comes for free.""I don't understand what you're talking about.""No. You do." Steve smiled, but the smile never reached his eyes. 'What am I supposed to do?' I asked my babies inside me.'Turn his plan against him.' Caleb's voice came clearly. 'He suspects that you have a connection with Steve, doesn't he? Then we'll let him see you actually have one.'I froze.'That's too risky!''Fortune comes from taking risks,' Caleb replied. 'Daddy is too suspicious. The more innocent you look, the more he'll doubt you. Instead, let him believe the accusation. Make him focus all his attention on Steve. Then we'll have a chance to find his weakness.''What might his weakness be?''Money,' Lily answered immediately. 'All his money!'Caleb added calmly, 'Not just money. His empire. He has a secret offshore trust fund. That is the real core of his business empire. What we need is control of that fund.'I gasped. What kind of children were these two?'Mommy, just do as we say,' Caleb comforted me.
