Chapter 2

Author: Sandoo
I understood the assignment.

I timidly glanced at Sean, then at Kayla. "I-I don't think I can accept it. Sean said I shouldn't casually take things from other people."

With just one sentence, I placed me and Sean on the same side and made Kayla 'other people.'

Kayla's smile froze.

Sean, who was holding his coffee, stopped moving and smiled.

"Kayla gave it to you. Take it." Since he had spoken, I could only slowly reach out.

I opened the gift box. Inside was a lace baby outfit that had turned slightly yellow with age.

The craftsmanship was exquisite, but it carried an unmistakable sense of oldness.

I immediately pulled away as if I had been burned.

"Ahh!" I covered my mouth, and my eyes filled with fear. "W-Where did you get this? Could there be bacteria on it? M-My babies could get sick," I said through choked sobs. I sounded naive and foolish.

Kayla's face turned pale. Her expression darkened.

"Ms. Everton, this was handmade for the Fercanso Royal Family. It's priceless."

"B-But it's so old." I pouted. Tears gathered in my eyes. "Sean, I'm scared."

I turned to face Sean. It looked like I was asking him to protect me.

Sean put down his coffee cup. He stood up and walked over to me before pulling me into his arms.

He didn't even look at Kayla. He simply told the butler, "Walter, put it away. Burn it later."

He then lowered his head and whispered next to my ear. "Stop crying."

Kayla left.

As she walked away, the hatred in her eyes was so intense it felt like she wanted to tear me apart.

Sean, however, acted as if nothing had happened. He held my chin and forced me to drink a glass of prenatal vitamin supplements.

The bitter liquid made my entire face scrunch up.

He laughed and brushed a finger against my lips.

"You're so spoiled."

I couldn't tell whether it was praise or mockery.

'Mommy, he's going to a private auction tonight,' Caleb suddenly said. 'He'll take you with him.'

'Why?' My heart clenched.

Kayla always went to places like that.

'It's a trap,' Caleb answered immediately. 'He's using you to lure someone out.'

'Who?'

'His illegitimate older brother, Steve Freeman.'

I was taken aback.

Did the Freeman family have an illegitimate son? I had never heard of that.

'Steve has always wanted a share of the family fortune, but he never had a chance. Tonight's auction has something that belonged to his mother. Sean deliberately leaked the information to draw him out.'

'What is it?'

'A jade hairpin.'

'What does that have to do with me?'

'Sean told outsiders that the jade hairpin was something he bought for you as a reward after you give birth to his heir.'

Lily kicked angrily inside me. 'Daddy is awful! He's using us as bait!'

Caleb remained calm. 'Mommy, this is our chance. You can't make a mistake. You need to perform perfectly.'

That night, Sean really did take me to the auction.

The venue was filled with wealthy elites.

Everyone had on expensive clothes and carried an air of arrogance.

Kayla was there too. She moved around Sean like she was his wife.

Meanwhile, I was nothing more than a decoration.

Sean pushed me into my seat and warned me, "Stay here. Don't move around."

I obediently nodded.

The auction began. One item after another was presented.

Finally, the jade hairpin appeared.

It was emerald green. A lifelike lotus flower was carved into the tip.

"This is the Silent Lotus. The starting bid is 500 thousand dollars."

Kayla looked at Sean, her eyes filled with confidence.

Everyone knew Kayla loved lotus flowers, but Sean didn't even raise his bidding paddle.

The price continued climbing. Soon, it reached one and a half million.

Suddenly, a bidding paddle with an unfamiliar number was raised.

The next day, my legal team appeared in front of Sean. They brought a transfer authorization document personally signed by Steve. It wasn't a simple asset transfer agreement. It was the heart of Sean's entire business empire, the highest-level control transfer document for his offshore trust fund. When Sean saw the familiar emergency authorization code and the legal documents that would instantly dismantle his empire, he finally understood. He picked up his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a number. His voice was cold."Activate the Scorched-Earth plan."The voice on the other end, which belonged to his most loyal subordinate, sounded hesitant. "M-Mr. Freeman, the signal is unstable–"The call was disconnected. He immediately called the trusted aide he had planted inside the board, but a secretary's cold voice came through. "Sorry, he is currently in a meeting with Steve."The call was disconnected yet again. Finally, he called the bank manager in Ravendale, but all he he

People started walking toward the garden.'Mommy, now! Act like you fainted!'I closed my eyes and collapsed to the ground."Anna!" Steve shouted. He ran over and caught me.Sean and his grandpa, who had just arrived, happened to witness this scene. The situation instantly descended into chaos.I was in Steve's arms. Kayla was screaming accusations like a madwoman. Sean's expression turned extremely dark. Meanwhile, his grandpa looked furious."What exactly is going on?" Sean's grandpa slammed his cane against the ground."Grandpa, don't fall for her tricks!" Kayla immediately uttered. "It was Anna! She brought Steve here! They've been working together all along! They want to ruin the Freeman family's reputation!"Sean said nothing. He only stared at me.That gaze felt like it could tear me apart.I slowly opened my eyes. When I saw what was going on, I immediately struggled out of Steve's arms. I then ran over to Sean."Sean, trust me! I didn't do anything!" I cried desper

'So I'm just a surrogate tool?''Yes. More importantly, I'm downloading the emergency authorization code for his secret offshore trust fund right now. Oh no! Mommy, his system's highest-level security alarm has been triggered! He knows someone accessed his core data!'I felt a chill down my spine.'Don't worry. I erased the traces, but he'll definitely start investigating. He'll think Steve did it.'Even that tiny bit of affection I thought I had received was nothing more than my own fantasy.'Mommy, don't be sad,' Lily comforted me. 'We're going to make him pay!'Caleb had already devised a plan. 'Mommy, Sean's grandfather, the head of the Freeman family, will return from overseas next week for his birthday. He values family above all else. On that day, we'll reveal the entire truth.'Sean's birthday party was held at the Freeman family's old residence. It was my first time stepping inside. The place was solemn and imposing. Every corner carried the weight of a century-old fa

My heart skipped a beat.It was my old phone. He had opened my photo album. Inside were all the pictures I secretly took of him. There were photos of his side profile while he worked, his face while he slept, and the slight frown on his face while he ate. These photos were something I had prepared long ago.Sean looked through them one by one. His expression grew dark. Then he looked up at me. There was a complicated look in his eyes."You–"I looked like a thief caught red-handed. I ran over and tried to grab my phone back."Don't look!"He easily held me down before pulling me into his arms."Why did you take these?""I-I was afraid you would leave me someday. I wanted to keep something to remember you by," I lowered my head and said with a sob.He stayed silent for a long time.It was so long that I thought my lie had been exposed. But suddenly, he lowered his head and kissed me.This kiss still reminded me of his possessive and controlling nature, but there was also

He was slender. The outline of his side profile looked seven parts similar to Sean's, but he lacked Sean's arrogance and hostility. Instead, there was a gentleness to him.At first glance, I thought it was Sean. My heart started pounding. He turned around. A pair of eyes that felt like blades scanned me from head to toe."My informant told me that you were talking to yourself in the bathroom last night for five minutes. Were you discussing countermeasures with your little strategists?"My mind went completely blank. This was not part of the plan.'Mommy, things have changed.' Even Caleb's voice became more serious. 'He tracked us back. There's a signal jammer in this room.'My heart sank."What do you want?" I looked at him cautiously."Take down Sean. I can help you." Steve pushed a cup of freshly brewed coffee toward me. "But nothing comes for free.""I don't understand what you're talking about.""No. You do." Steve smiled, but the smile never reached his eyes. 'What am I supposed to do?' I asked my babies inside me.'Turn his plan against him.' Caleb's voice came clearly. 'He suspects that you have a connection with Steve, doesn't he? Then we'll let him see you actually have one.'I froze.'That's too risky!''Fortune comes from taking risks,' Caleb replied. 'Daddy is too suspicious. The more innocent you look, the more he'll doubt you. Instead, let him believe the accusation. Make him focus all his attention on Steve. Then we'll have a chance to find his weakness.''What might his weakness be?''Money,' Lily answered immediately. 'All his money!'Caleb added calmly, 'Not just money. His empire. He has a secret offshore trust fund. That is the real core of his business empire. What we need is control of that fund.'I gasped. What kind of children were these two?'Mommy, just do as we say,' Caleb comforted me. "First of all, you need a new phone that cannot be tracked.''I can't leave.''Wait. Sean will let you out soon.'Sure en
