69. The Elephant in the room

After reassuring a worried-sick Julia that I was alive and well, I took a long and hot shower, and then went to my pup’s makeshift room to wake her up. I hated to leave her again that soon, but leaving Elijah at large for a day longer wasn’t a good idea. I wished I wasn’t too blinded by rage to see it weeks ago.

“Dwelling on the past won’t help be of any help,” Dora said.

“How are you feeling, golden furry girl?” I asked. Dora had been quiet for the last half an hour.

“I had to use plenty of energy, so I am still exhausted.”

I nodded inwardly, sitting on the edge of Stella’s bed to press a kiss on her forehead.

“Good morning, my sweet pup,” I beamed. With her back in my life, my heart was filled with joy and …. Lightness. Yes! That was the feeling stretching across my chest.

“Good morning, Angel,” she yawned, rubbing the sleepiness off her eyes. Her little fingers danced along my still damp hair. “I missed your red hair and your eyes.” She jumped up to give me a baby-bear hug
