Chapter 6

مؤلف: Levinne
Elena's POV

I didn't want to see that cold, contemptuous look again. I just closed my eyes.

"Young Master Adrian, if you'd like to give Miss Vicky a gift, there are plenty of choices here."

"But I've already paid for this brooch. It's mine."

“It's mine.”

I'd said those words so many times.

The servants were always taking my things. More than once the Princess had seen it, and never lifted a finger.

She'd probably understood, earlier than anyone, that Adrian didn't love me. That was why she'd opposed the engagement from the start.

Young as I was then, I refused to believe it. I thought Adrian couldn't live without me, that I couldn't live without him, and I clung to that to the death.

But within five years of my mother's death, Adrian recovered, and proved her right.

I lifted my eyes and looked at him, coldly, without a trace of love.

The more plainly I laid it out, the more I forced myself to watch the two of them wrapped around each other, the clearer my head became.

Adrian despised me for being human, and turned all his gentleness, all his manners, on my stepsister.

After every banquet, the servants brought back their whispers.

Alone in my room, I could always hear them gossiping at the door.

Adrian hit it off well with Vicky at the banquet. When they crossed paths, he'd greet her.

They all said that if he'd been betrothed to Vicky instead of me, the dull elder daughter of the Valerie family, things might have turned out completely different.

We shared a father but not a mother, and yet she looked so much like me.

That had always been the thorn in my heart.

If I hadn't slipped home on the anniversary of my mother's death, I'd never have seen that infant in my father's arms, the one he was rocking so tenderly.

I hadn't even known he'd built a new family.

Back then, Adrian had snuck out with me, held me, and said he would marry me, that he would be my family, that I shouldn't grieve.

Only now did I understand.

He'd been lying to me all along.

Those careless promises, I never should have believed.

Adrian saw the coldness in my eyes, and his expression tightened.

"How much is this brooch? Where did you get the money?"

I didn't answer. He turned his glare on the shop owner, who went rigid with fear.

"Young Master Adrian, the brooch is thirty million. Miss Elena paid for it a month ago—"

At the price, something flickered in Adrian's eyes.

But his face only went darker.

"Elena. Where did you get thirty million?"

I lifted the corner of my mouth, about to answer, when Vicky cut in.

"My sister's marrying the Lord of the North. Of course she's not short on money."

Adrian's grip tightened on the brooch. I lunged forward to snatch it, and he caught my wrist.

I fought him, hard, and only left my wrist ringed with red.

"You'd marry someone else for thirty million?"

His eyes had gone bloodshot. He pinned me with the question, low.

"You're already betrothed to me. Where do you think you can run off to?"

I stopped struggling. At those words, a cold smile rose to my lips.

"What does it have to do with you where I’m to marry?"

My reflection crossed his eyes, and something there flinched, stung.

"Adrian, it's been so long and we still aren't married. I know you think I'm not good enough for you, that you don't want to marry me."

I said it all with that cold smile fixed in place.

My chest felt hollow. I couldn't feel a trace of pain.

"So it's fine. I'll leave on my own. You don't have to drive me out."

Adrian's grip turned crushing. He was rattled, and it came out almost before he could think. "If it's about money, I'll give you thirty million. You are not marrying anyone else!"

I looked up at him, unable to tell whether he was mocking me or actually trying to keep me.

So I shook my head and stared back, cold.

"And what if it is about money?"

"Even if I sold myself for money, I'd never sell myself to you."

That, finally, enraged him. He let go of my wrist.

I stumbled, dodged the hand he instinctively reached out to steady me, and stood alone, facing the two of them.

"Sir, I'll give you forty million. Sell me the brooch."

Adrian tossed the brooch carelessly onto the counter. "Wrap it up for me."

My throat seized. I turned to the owner.

His eyes were full of fear. Terrified of offending so high a customer, he could only give me an apologetic look.

"I'm so sorry, Miss. I'll refund every cent, and compensate you besides—"

"I don't want compensation. I want this brooch!"

I cut him off, sharp, and looked back at Adrian, hatred rising in me before I could stop it.

"Do you really despise me that much?"

The words tore out of me at him.

"I've already walked away on my own. Why do you still have to humiliate me?"

The tears I couldn't hold back slid down my face.

I saw Adrian freeze, while I clumsily tried to hide my tears.

I lowered my head. A handkerchief of ivory white, held in a warm, elegant hand, appeared before me.

"My lady. I've found you at last."

"Don't cry. I'm here."

I looked up, into a pair of smiling eyes.

Elena's POVBy the time Adrian reached the North, it was the seventh day after the wedding. The snow had just stopped.I was sitting in the study, reading the old Valemont family records Lucien had found for me.The pages were old. There were photographs of my mother in her youth, and the family's coat of arms.I traced the words with my fingertips, and something inside me grew quiet. For all these years, my mother's name had been nothing but the late Mrs. Valerie, the woman who'd saved the Prince's heir and died under a hunter's gun.Only now could I truly feel that she had once been young, treasured by a family of her own.She had once been a daughter whose name was written, with care, into a lineage. And now, across fifteen long years, I finally had the chance to know her again.Footsteps came from outside the door.A maid said softly, "My lady, someone has come from the Prince's domain."My hand stilled on the page.I didn't have to ask who.Lucien stood by the window and looked ba

Elena's POVThe wedding in the North was far grander than I'd imagined.I'd thought it would be a cold, formal affair. After all, I was only a stand-in for Vicky. But when the plane landed and the motorcade crossed the snowfields into the northern castle, I saw the whole keep lit up.Silver-blue banners hung down the black stone walls. The long corridor was lined with the people of the North. They didn't look at me the way you'd look at a joke. They didn't sneer because I was human. As I stepped from the car, they bowed as one."My lady."In that instant, my hand went to my chest without thinking.Through the thin fabric, the ruby brooch felt like my mother, still with me.Lucien stood at my side and offered his hand.I hesitated, then placed mine in his palm. His hand was steady."Don't be afraid," he said softly."They're welcoming you."I stared, taking in all those eager, admiring faces, and it felt strange. In the Prince's domain, I had always been the one too many.In the Valerie

Adrian's POVWhen I brought the contract to my parents, they were in the receiving room.My mother saw my face and frowned slightly."Adrian, what's the matter with you?"My father sat at the head of the room, calmer than her."I hear you lost your composure over Elena again today.""Since she's willing to marry into the North, that's no bad thing for you.""A human girl was never suited to be the heir's wife.""We cared for her all these years. Call it repaying her mother's debt, and let it end there."I stopped in the doorway. The words went in like a dull blade, straight to the heart.Once, I'd thought the same way.I never said it aloud. But I let it stand.Let it stand, that Elena wasn't good enough for me, that she didn't belong at my side.Let it stand, that dragging out the engagement, refusing to marry her, was me protecting the family's good name. But now, I only wanted the whole truth."So you drove her into a servant's room?"My mother's face changed."What servant's room?"

Adrian's POVWhen I got back to the manor, the rain still hadn't stopped. As the car door opened, I looked, without thinking, toward the front courtyard. It was empty. No Elena. No rain-soaked figure clutching the front of her dress, head down, standing off to the side.I frowned. The agitation in my chest rose again. She was the one who'd made the scene. She was the one who'd agreed to marry into the North for thirty million. But every time I thought of the way she'd looked at me in the antique shop, I couldn't get calm.It wasn't spite. It wasn't hurt.It was a stillness, completely cold.It was as if I'd finally been cut out of her heart.I called for a guard."Look into that ruby brooch.""And find out where Elena got that thirty million."The guard left.I waited in the study all night. He came back as the sky was paling."Young master, I have it.""The ruby brooch is genuine. An old piece that surfaced on the black market after the blood-soaked banquet, fifteen years ago.""It ch

Elena's POVAfter Adrian left, the antique shop fell terribly quiet. The owner stood behind the counter, pale, breathing softly.Vicky had gone with Adrian. Before she left, she'd glanced back at me once. There was resentment in that look, and a jealousy she couldn't quite hide.I paid her no mind. All my attention was on the ruby brooch on the counter. It had been set back in its velvet tray. The stone threw a soft, warm light under the lamp.It was like the spot of red that used to catch my eye whenever my mother bent to hold me.I reached for it.The moment my fingertips touched the brooch, my eyes burned.I'd searched for it for fifteen years. From the day of my mother's funeral, when I found it gone, I'd thought of nothing but getting it back.I was so young then.I only knew my mother was dead.I only knew she'd promised that on my wedding day, she would pin this brooch to my dress with her own hands. But she never lived to see that day.And the brooch was gone.Everyone told me
