Chapter 1

Holly Sullivan and I registered our marriage two months ago. Our wedding ceremony was scheduled for tomorrow.

The venue was booked, the guests had been informed, and all of the payments had been made. I thought that, by the end of tomorrow, Holly and I would officially be a family.

But those words that hovered before my eyes gave me a rude awakening.

Eric Cooper, my best friend, was still on the call with me, urging, "Hey man, you there? Say something! Everyone's waiting for you. It's your last night as a bachelor. Are you even a man if you don't show up?"

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I'd thrown on a black jacket over my white shirt. The watch Holly had given me was on my wrist.

It suddenly hit me just how ridiculous this situation was.

"I'll be there a little later," I said quietly.

Eric gave a chuckle and declared, "Now that's more like it. It's the Crown Suite at The Aurelian, got it? Don't go to the wrong place. I promise that tonight's surprise is one you'll never forget."

The call ended, but I didn't rush out the door. The first thing I did was disable all transaction methods for the financial services under my name, including my bank account, my credit card, and my Venmo account.

Then I froze the supplementary card I'd given Holly. I'd given her that card to pay for our wedding expenses. Two weeks ago, she'd said the stress of the upcoming wedding was getting to her and that doing a little retail therapy would cheer her up. I hadn't thought much of it.

Looking back now, I felt like an idiot.

I sent my lawyer, Michael Gardner, a message with a link to track my real-time location.

"If I go missing tonight, or if anyone accuses me of soliciting prostitutes, domestic violence, or infidelity, retrieve my phone recordings, dashcam footage, payment records, location history, and home surveillance footage immediately."

Michael's reply came instantly. "What's going on?"

I answered, "Someone wants to set me up."

Then I turned on my phone's continuous audio recording feature.

I ran a company specializing in security systems. I knew better than most how cameras, access control systems, vehicle recording equipment, and digital forensics worked.

I configured the audio recording to upload to the company server in real time, then enabled cloud backup for all four channels of my dashcam footage.

Once that was done, I messaged Holly.

"Eric invited me to a club tonight. I'm only joining him for a few minutes as a courtesy to him. I won't participate in anything illegal or inappropriate. If you have a problem with this and want to call off tomorrow's wedding, we can handle everything in accordance with the law and let the evidence speak for itself."

It took her quite a while to reply. "Logan, why are you saying this to me on the eve of our wedding? Are you hiding something from me?"

I stared at the message for a few seconds, but I didn't respond.

I got into my car and drove out of the apartment complex, but instead of heading to the club, I made a stop at the South Precinct police station.

After hearing what I said, the officer on duty looked at me and asked, "You suspect someone is going to set you up at The Aurelian?"

"That's right."

"Then you can choose not to go over there," the officer reminded me.

"If I don't go, they'll just execute another scheme," I replied. "My wedding is tomorrow. I don't want someone to destroy it with a fake video and fabricated testimony."

The officer frowned. "Be careful. If anything happens, call the police immediately. Don't get into a confrontation on your own."

I nodded and made sure the police had made an official record of my statement. It was 8:27 pm when I left the police station.

As I made my way to The Aurelian, traffic suddenly came to a standstill. Up ahead, an old man was sitting by the roadside, his elbow scraped raw. Beside him stood the owner of an electric scooter, who smelled strongly of alcohol and was cursing him out.

"Don't even try to scam me, you old bugger! I haven't even asked you to pay me for the damage to my scooter!"

I pulled over in a spot where I knew the security cameras could capture me. Then I used my phone to record the accident scene before pulling up the footage from my dashcam.

The footage was crystal clear. The electric scooter had run a red light and clipped the elderly man before the rider fell off himself.

I called the police and arranged an ambulance for the old man.

Clutching his arm, he looked at me and said, "You seem like a levelheaded young man who handles things well."

"It's an occupational habit."

"What's your name? What do you do for a living?"

"I'm Logan Hughes. I'm in the security systems industry."

The man nodded. "My name is Steven Archer. I used to be pretty involved with surveillance systems and the digital forensics industry myself."

I arrived at The Aurelian at exactly 9:00 pm. As soon as the elevator doors opened, I spotted Eric at the far end of the hallway. He waved at me and hollered, "Logan, over here! We've been waiting on you!"

Six months later, Sentinel Security landed a project that involved upgrading the security system at an old apartment complex. It wasn't a major project, but it involved a lot of tedious work. The complex had 24 buildings and over 70 blocks. The surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alerts for blocked fire exits all had to be replaced or redone.I spent all my time running around the complex with the crew, confirming camera locations, testing wiring, configuring backend permissions, setting storage periods, and ensuring logs were retained.Luke joked, "Mr. Hughes, you're even more demanding than the client themselves."I tightened a mounting bracket and shot back, "A broken device can be replaced, but if the evidence goes missing, even the innocent might not get to clear their name."He fell silent for a moment before nodding. "You make a good point."At noon, Steven showed up at the apartment complex with two takeout containers."Skipping your meals again?" he said s

It rained in Greenvale on the day of the divorce hearing. Holly's parents were waiting for me outside the courthouse. The moment Martha saw me, she burst into tears and pleaded, "Logan, I'm begging you. Holly's just young and foolish. Please give her another chance. We'll pay back the 500 grand little by little, and we'll return the car, too. Just don't send her to prison."I stopped in my tracks and corrected her. "She isn't young and foolish. She's just a heinous person by nature."Martha's expression stiffened. "How can you say that about her? You two were basically married! What kind of husband would be this cruel to his wife?"I looked right back at her and asked, "What kind of wife plots to kill off her husband to get her hands on his assets?"Bernard Sullivan, Holly's father, had been silent the whole time. I was just about to enter the courthouse when he finally muttered, "We failed to raise her right."That was too little, too late. The court ultimately ruled that even

The details that came to light following the police investigation were far more sordid than I'd expected. As it turned out, Holly and Eric hadn't only begun their illicit relationship just before the wedding. They'd known each other long before Holly and I met each other on a blind date. The night she accepted my proposal, Eric had been waiting for her outside.I was soon presented with a litany of evidence, including the hotel booking records, photos of them in various secluded parking lots, and the takeout orders made from Holly's phone that were delivered to Eric's address. As I stared at the pages for a very long time, I was abruptly reminded of the day Holly and I registered our marriage. She'd worn a white dress then, and once we stepped out of the city hall, she'd flashed a beautiful smile at me, saying, "Logan, from now on, we're a family."Now I knew what she meant by that—she was celebrating the fact that she could inherit my assets once I was dead.Once the police reco

Eric tried his damnedest to break free as he screamed, "That message is fake! Logan's tryna set me up!"Meanwhile, all color drained from Holly's face. She rushed forward to grab the phone, but Michael stopped her."The police are here. The phone will be taken in as evidence. If it's fake, the server records will prove it."Steven, who was still on the call, sighed."Young people always think they can fool everyone by deleting chats, changing usernames, and switching profile pictures. Digital data isn't the same as paper. You can't just burn it and make it disappear."Holly's legs gave way. She had to grab the table to keep from falling.Eric was still shouting his head off. "Holly! Don't say anything stupid! We didn't do anything!"But the louder he shouted, the guiltier he sounded. The police quickly brought Kevin down to the police station to assist with the investigation. At first, he tried to hold his ground, claiming the change in booking was simply a system error. Holly's medical report appeared on the screen. According to the timestamp, she visited the hospital at 11:42 pm. Her diagnosis consisted of facial soft tissue contusion and subcutaneous bruising of the forearm.Sobbing hard, she said, "That evening, he came to my house and demanded that I return the 500,000 dollars he'd given me as a wedding gift. When I refused, he hit me. Then, that night, he went to the club to hook up with another woman. The words flowed out of her in smooth succession, almost as if she'd memorized them beforehand.I played another set of footage to prove that from 6:50 pm to 8:16 pm that evening, I'd been at home. The surveillance camera outside my front door had recorded when I left the house. The footage from the apartment elevators and underground parking lot, along with my vehicle's location data, all proved the same thing. At 8:16 pm, I arrived at the South Precinct police station to leave my statement with the officers. There was an official record of my

Joseph was also stunned. "You're Steven Archer, aren't you? You were head of the police's digital forensics unit!"Steven glanced at the crowd and said, "Even though I've retired from the force, I haven't gone blind."The moment Steven finished speaking, the atmosphere shifted. Some of the people who'd been shouting the loudest just moments ago began backing away.Michael addressed the phones that were still pointed at us. "All the evidence presented today will be submitted to the police at the same time. Feel free to keep livestreaming. That way, everyone can see the complete evidence."Eric scowled. "What evidence? Stop trying to scare us, Logan!""Let's start with the evidence from The Aurelian, then," Steven declared. The lobby screen lit up, and the first piece of evidence was the original surveillance footage from the sixth-floor hallway of The Aurelian. At 9:19 pm, Amy entered the Crown Suite. 29 seconds later, I came out of the suite, stood beneath the security camera in
