Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The Crown Suite was pretty dimly lit. The table was covered with liquor bottles, and rowdy music played from the speakers.

I didn't know anyone else in the suite at the club. They were all part of Eric's circle and dabbled in the car sales industry like he did.

Eric slung an arm around my shoulders and said, "The groom has finally arrived! You're about to be shackled for life tomorrow, so tonight, we're giving you one last send-off!"

Someone whistled, and someone else shoved a glass into my hand. I smiled, but I didn't drink.

"My wedding's tomorrow. I can't get drunk."

Eric clicked his tongue. "Why are you acting like you have a stick up your butt? Does Holly keep you on such a tight leash?"

At the mention of Holly's name, I looked at him. His smile looked natural and convincing, as if he were genuinely indignant on my behalf.

We'd been best friends for ten years now. The year I returned to Greenvale after leaving the military, Eric was still washing cars at a used-car showroom.

He'd told me he wanted to start his own used-car business by venturing into livestreamed car sales, but he had no equipment, no space, and no capital.

I'd set up his livestream studio for him, lent him a warehouse, and even covered his debts twice. He'd teared up when he called me his best buddy.

I never thought he'd be the one who'd end up dooming me.

Eric reached for my jacket.

"Just leave your jacket on the couch, and don't keep your phone on you. You wouldn't want a random call to ruin the mood."

I avoided his hand and said, "It's fine."

For a moment, Eric's gaze darkened, but he regained his cheerful demeanor immediately after. "Fine. Suit yourself."

At 9:19 pm, the door to the suite swung open. A woman in a skimpy dress walked in, her perfume overpowering the room. She sat down right next to me and pressed her body against mine before draping her fingers over my arm.

"Hey there, Mr. Hughes. Eric said everything's been paid for. I'm here to keep you company tonight."

The room erupted in catcalls and whistles.

Eric even deliberately took out his phone to record me. "Look at the groom getting ready for a wild night before his wedding!"

I didn't push the woman away. I was afraid she might use the opportunity to fall over and give them the chance to accuse me of assaulting a woman.

Instead, I rose to my feet and walked out of the suite. I stood right under the surveillance camera in the hallway before calling the police. Putting the call on speaker mode, I reported, "Hello, I'm calling outside the Crown Suite on the sixth floor of The Aurelian.

"Someone has used my identity to arrange an illegal transaction and is attempting to fabricate evidence of my supposed infidelity before my wedding. I'm currently standing under the surveillance camera in a public hallway, and I haven't been alone with the other party at any point. Please send some officers over to document the scene."

The bustle inside the suite died out. Eric came running out with a scowl on his face.

"Logan! Are you out of your mind? You're calling the cops over a joke?"

I looked at him. "You think soliciting prostitutes is something to joke about?"

He lowered his voice. "Your wedding's tomorrow! Are you sure you want to get involved with the police tonight? That's bad mojo."

I ignored him.

The woman in the skimpy dress stood in the doorway, her face pale as well.

15 minutes later, the police arrived.

Eric, however, was far calmer than I'd expected.

Kevin Patterson, the manager of the club, produced the transaction records, which indicated that the Crown Suite had been booked under my name, with my driver's license for identification. The invoice included an item listed as "private entertainment service".

The woman's name was Amy Farrow. She tearfully claimed that I'd contacted her in advance and told her to meet me at the Crown Suite at 9:20 pm. She even had the chat records on her phone, showing that she'd spoken to someone with my face as his profile picture and who identified himself with the name "Logan Hughes".

She also showed the police the Venmo transfer of 5,000 dollars that she'd received. The transaction remark read, "Satisfy me tonight, and I'll tip you extra."

When the police officers looked at me, I unlocked my phone and handed it over.

"I disabled all my payment methods before leaving the house this evening. My phone has been recording continuously since I left the house, and the files are being uploaded in real time. The only call I've taken tonight was from Eric. I haven't contacted this woman."

Eric snorted.

"Logan, if it wasn't you, how are you going to explain why she knows your name and where to find you? Even if you're my best friend, I'm not going to lie for you."

As soon as he finished speaking, one of the officers received a phone call.

"Someone has anonymously reported the occurrence of illegal prostitution at the Crown Suite of The Aurelian. According to the report, the suspect is Logan Hughes."

Everyone turned to look at me again.

It hit me then that they'd never intended to rely on just Amy to set me up.

The booking of the suite under my name, the money transfer, the chat records, and now the police report—everything had been arranged in advance.

Just as the police took me away for further investigation, my phone suddenly began vibrating nonstop.

Holly had uploaded a video. She sat on the edge of the bed, her face swollen and her arms mottled with bruises, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Our wedding ceremony's supposed to take place tomorrow, but I really can't take it anymore! He's out there sleeping with a prostitute the night before our wedding, and he's been abusing me for a long time! I'm scared. I just want to stay alive."

Six months later, Sentinel Security landed a project that involved upgrading the security system at an old apartment complex. It wasn't a major project, but it involved a lot of tedious work. The complex had 24 buildings and over 70 blocks. The surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alerts for blocked fire exits all had to be replaced or redone.I spent all my time running around the complex with the crew, confirming camera locations, testing wiring, configuring backend permissions, setting storage periods, and ensuring logs were retained.Luke joked, "Mr. Hughes, you're even more demanding than the client themselves."I tightened a mounting bracket and shot back, "A broken device can be replaced, but if the evidence goes missing, even the innocent might not get to clear their name."He fell silent for a moment before nodding. "You make a good point."At noon, Steven showed up at the apartment complex with two takeout containers."Skipping your meals again?" he said s

It rained in Greenvale on the day of the divorce hearing. Holly's parents were waiting for me outside the courthouse. The moment Martha saw me, she burst into tears and pleaded, "Logan, I'm begging you. Holly's just young and foolish. Please give her another chance. We'll pay back the 500 grand little by little, and we'll return the car, too. Just don't send her to prison."I stopped in my tracks and corrected her. "She isn't young and foolish. She's just a heinous person by nature."Martha's expression stiffened. "How can you say that about her? You two were basically married! What kind of husband would be this cruel to his wife?"I looked right back at her and asked, "What kind of wife plots to kill off her husband to get her hands on his assets?"Bernard Sullivan, Holly's father, had been silent the whole time. I was just about to enter the courthouse when he finally muttered, "We failed to raise her right."That was too little, too late. The court ultimately ruled that even

The details that came to light following the police investigation were far more sordid than I'd expected. As it turned out, Holly and Eric hadn't only begun their illicit relationship just before the wedding. They'd known each other long before Holly and I met each other on a blind date. The night she accepted my proposal, Eric had been waiting for her outside.I was soon presented with a litany of evidence, including the hotel booking records, photos of them in various secluded parking lots, and the takeout orders made from Holly's phone that were delivered to Eric's address. As I stared at the pages for a very long time, I was abruptly reminded of the day Holly and I registered our marriage. She'd worn a white dress then, and once we stepped out of the city hall, she'd flashed a beautiful smile at me, saying, "Logan, from now on, we're a family."Now I knew what she meant by that—she was celebrating the fact that she could inherit my assets once I was dead.Once the police reco

Eric tried his damnedest to break free as he screamed, "That message is fake! Logan's tryna set me up!"Meanwhile, all color drained from Holly's face. She rushed forward to grab the phone, but Michael stopped her."The police are here. The phone will be taken in as evidence. If it's fake, the server records will prove it."Steven, who was still on the call, sighed."Young people always think they can fool everyone by deleting chats, changing usernames, and switching profile pictures. Digital data isn't the same as paper. You can't just burn it and make it disappear."Holly's legs gave way. She had to grab the table to keep from falling.Eric was still shouting his head off. "Holly! Don't say anything stupid! We didn't do anything!"But the louder he shouted, the guiltier he sounded. The police quickly brought Kevin down to the police station to assist with the investigation. At first, he tried to hold his ground, claiming the change in booking was simply a system error. Holly's medical report appeared on the screen. According to the timestamp, she visited the hospital at 11:42 pm. Her diagnosis consisted of facial soft tissue contusion and subcutaneous bruising of the forearm.Sobbing hard, she said, "That evening, he came to my house and demanded that I return the 500,000 dollars he'd given me as a wedding gift. When I refused, he hit me. Then, that night, he went to the club to hook up with another woman. The words flowed out of her in smooth succession, almost as if she'd memorized them beforehand.I played another set of footage to prove that from 6:50 pm to 8:16 pm that evening, I'd been at home. The surveillance camera outside my front door had recorded when I left the house. The footage from the apartment elevators and underground parking lot, along with my vehicle's location data, all proved the same thing. At 8:16 pm, I arrived at the South Precinct police station to leave my statement with the officers. There was an official record of my

Joseph was also stunned. "You're Steven Archer, aren't you? You were head of the police's digital forensics unit!"Steven glanced at the crowd and said, "Even though I've retired from the force, I haven't gone blind."The moment Steven finished speaking, the atmosphere shifted. Some of the people who'd been shouting the loudest just moments ago began backing away.Michael addressed the phones that were still pointed at us. "All the evidence presented today will be submitted to the police at the same time. Feel free to keep livestreaming. That way, everyone can see the complete evidence."Eric scowled. "What evidence? Stop trying to scare us, Logan!""Let's start with the evidence from The Aurelian, then," Steven declared. The lobby screen lit up, and the first piece of evidence was the original surveillance footage from the sixth-floor hallway of The Aurelian. At 9:19 pm, Amy entered the Crown Suite. 29 seconds later, I came out of the suite, stood beneath the security camera in
