Chapter 4

Author: Shrimp Basque
“Tina…” I gritted my teeth. My mouth filled with the taste of metallic blood.

“What you’re doing is illegal! This is murder!”

“Murder?” Tina grinned.

“Sir, you can put anything you want in your mouth, but you can’t just say whatever comes to mind. This was just an unfortunate accident.

“Mom’s got everything arranged. As long as Anya is dead and the compensation is paid, who’s going to investigate a broken steel wire?”

The word “Mom” rolled off her tongue so effortlessly.

My heart felt like it was being shredded in a meat grinder.

“You call her ‘Mom’… Have you two been reunited for a long time?”

“Of course.” Tina raised her eyebrows smugly.

“Ever since I was born, Mom has doted on me the most.

“She said that idiot Anya is just like you, dull and boring. I’m the only one she’s proud of.

“You know what? I told her I wanted to see Anya fly high in the sky, only to crash and burn.

“Mom agreed without a second thought and even praised me for being creative.”

“Beasts… your whole family are beasts!”

Rage surged through me, and I shoved Tina away violently.

“Stop him! Don’t let him ruin the fun!” Steve roared.

Two boys immediately rushed over and pinned me firmly to the ground.

My face was pressed against the cold, rough floor. My line of sight lined up with a crack in the side curtain.

Through that crack, I could clearly see the scene on stage.

The girl flying through the air was performing a difficult spin mid-air.

I knew for a fact that the steel wire holding her was on the verge of snapping.

“Since you love your daughter so much, watch this carefully.”

Steve walked over, planted his foot on my shoulder, and forced me to stare at the gap.

“Don’t you dare close your eyes, Emery.”

“Vera is watching from down below. She’s waiting to celebrate with her precious Tina.”

“Let me go! Stop this right now!”

I struggled desperately. My fists pounded against the ground with a dull thud.

That was a human life! Even if it was not Anya, it was still an innocent child!

“I beg you, stop this. I’ll divorce Vera!

“I’ll take Anya with me! Please, spare that child!”

My eyes were teary, and I was screaming at the top of my lungs.

But Steve just laughed even harder.

He pulled out his phone and pointed it at my face.

Tina giggled as she stomped on the back of my hand, crushing it with all her might.

“Ah!”

The pain shot through my entire body. The nerves from fingers were connected to the whole body, after all.

“Begging won’t help,” Tina said with a vicious glint in her eyes.

“Anya has to die. If she doesn’t die, how else could I rightfully join the Sander family?

“If she doesn’t die, how else could I inherit Mom’s fortune? Blame her for having bad luck. She’s standing in my way!”

The music on stage grew increasingly quick and frantic.

In my past timeline, the scene of my daughter’s fatal fall kept replaying in my mind.

Despair washed over me like a tidal wave.

“Vera… you’ll all get what’s coming to you…”

Just as the girl executed a grand leap, a “snap” sounded from the steel cable.

I watched helplessly as she plummeted to the ground.

Immediately afterward came a unified gasp from the thousands in the audience, followed by the dull thud of a heavy object hitting the ground.

By the time I finished giving my statement at the police station, the sky was already pitch dark.I dragged my exhausted body back home.Standing in front of Anya’s door, I took a deep breath before reaching for my keys. The door opened.Anya was curled up in the corner of her bed, her eyes red and swollen from crying. When she saw me come in, she jerked her head away and refused to look at me.“How much longer are you going to keep me locked up?“My dreams are ruined… completely ruined…“Dad, I hate you.”Hearing that word “hate,” my heart gave a sharp twinge. But I did not explain myself. I just turned on the TV and tuned to the local news channel. The news was airing a live report from the scene of the anniversary celebration accident. The footage of Vera, Steve, and Tina being taken away, along with Mr. Zimmer’s furious accusations, was replayed over and over.Anya froze. She stared intently at the screen, watching the close-up of the snapped wire and Charlotte being

“Mr. Sommer… he didn’t know… I… “Anya couldn’t make it, and I was afraid the show would be canceled, so I secretly put on her clothes to stand in for her…“No one knew it was me. They… they were trying to harm Anya…”I let out a long sigh. My back was already soaked with cold sweat. So that was how it was.Thank goodness, thank goodness I had laid down a cushion.Otherwise, this kind-hearted girl would have died today, and I would have carried that guilt for the rest of my life. After hearing his daughter’s words, Mr. Zimmer’s eyes welled up with tears. He gently patted his daughter’s hand. Then, he suddenly stood up and kicked Vera hard in the calf.“You beast!”Vera was knocked to her knees by the kick. She clutched her leg and screamed in agony.“Mr. Zimmer… please spare my life! I really didn’t know it was Charlotte!“If it had been Anya, would you have dared to kill her?!”Mr. Zimmer roared, “That’s your own flesh and blood! Even a tiger wouldn’t eat its own cubs. Yo

That single word, “Charlotte,” left Vera and Steve frozen in place.Vera’s mouth fell open. Her mind went completely blank.Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s only daughter, Charlotte Zimmer? She mechanically turned her head to look at me.I stood where I was, returning her gaze with a cold stare.“Vera, weren’t you crying so hard just a moment ago? Why aren’t you crying anymore?”On the stretcher, the school nurse removed the mask from the girl’s face. The face that was revealed was delicate and pale, but it was definitely not my daughter, Anya.It was Mr. Zimmer’s pride and joy, Charlotte Zimmer.Vera felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her whole body went limp, and she collapsed to the ground.Steve was so terrified his legs gave way, and he dropped straight to his knees.Tina covered her mouth, the malice in her eyes giving way to utter terror. How could it be Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s fierce eyes filled with tears as he scanned the room. His gaze was so fierce it seemed

The shove was so forceful that Vera staggered back several steps.“You lunatic! How dare you push me?”Vera clutched her chest, unable to believe what had happened.I ignored her and turned to shout at the school nurse. “Hurry up and help her! There’s an air cushion down there!”“Air cushion?”Vera and Steve spoke at the same time. Their voices filled with terror. The school nurses immediately rushed over to check on her.Due to the massive impact, a section of the stage floor had caved in. It was perfectly flat before.I rushed over and ripped away the decorative carpet covering it.Beneath it lay a thick layer of professional protective padding! After I went back in time, aside from locking Anya inside the house, I had also paid the stage crew to install an air cushion underneath.I was afraid that, just in case I could not stop the performance, someone else might use their power to exert pressure. The tragedy of my previous life must not be repeated.“She’s breathing! “Ah! Someone fell!”“Call an ambulance quickly! Someone’s been killed!”The two boys holding me were so shocked that they went stiff. Their grip loosened.I shoved them aside forcefully and stumbled toward the stage.Steve and Tina stood where they were, exchanging a glance as a smirk of triumph flashed in their eyes.Tina even muttered under her breath, “Finally dead, that eyesore.”I did not have time to pay attention to that vicious father-daughter duo and charged straight onto the stage. In the center of the stage, the figure that had fallen lay curled up on the ground, motionless.A circle of teachers and students had already gathered around, but no one dared to approach.“Everyone, step back! Don’t touch her!” I roared as I pushed through the crowd.Just as I was about to rush over to check on her injuries, a heart-wrenching voice instantly echoed throughout the venue via the microphone.“What a tragedy! What a terrible tragedy!”Vera rushed forward.Without so much
