Chapter 3

Autor: Shrimp Basque
Vera still did not know that the person on stage was not Anya.

I suddenly thought back to my past life. I recalled the cold, emotionless expression on her face during my daughter’s cremation.

I remembered how she had cried while making public statements, claiming that I had driven my daughter to her death.

The corners of her mouth had curled up ever so slightly.

At that time, I thought I must have misinterpreted it. I had blamed it on my shock and grief from my daughter’s death.

But at that moment, I felt a chill creeping up my spine.

Furious, I shouted, “Vera Sander, what if it breaks? Aren’t you afraid she’ll die?!”

There was a second of silence on the other end of the line.

Then, Vera’s voice grew a few degrees colder.

“Emery, you need to be reasonable. Are you really going to bring the entire school, thousands of students, to a standstill just because of your wild speculation?

“Enough. I’m hanging up.”

Beep, beep, beep.

Vera hung up the phone without a second thought.

I froze in place. My heart felt like it was being viciously crushed by an icy hand.

She did not ask “What’s the problem?” Neither did she ask, “Is Anya afraid?”

She did not even hesitate for a single second to verify the potential danger.

If she were a normal mother, upon hearing her husband say their daughter’s life was in danger, even if the probability were one in ten thousand, she should have erred on the side of caution and save her first, no questions asked.

Unless…

A contemptuous chuckle drifted down from above.

Steve was holding his phone. The screen was lit up, displaying a message that had just been sent.

The profile picture belonged to Vera.

I narrowed my eyes and looked closely. The message read.

[Is that crazy man causing a scene backstage? Keep an eye on him for me. Don’t let him ruin my plans.]

[As long as that good-for-nothing meets an “accident” today, no one will ever compete with our Tina for the family fortune again.]

Boom!

In an instant, all the clues fell into place.

Why had Tina been targeting Anya all along?

Also why had Steve, as the advisor, turned a blind eye to Anya being bullied?

So that was it… Steve was Vera’s lover!

Then, Tina… was she Vera and Steve’s daughter? She was their illegitimate daughter!

They were in cahoots.

They had been planning to get rid of Anya all along, just to make room for that illegitimate daughter!

“Get it now?”

Steve put away his phone, a smug smile on his face.

“Emery, you and your stupid daughter are nothing but a nuisance.

“Vera has always loved me. Tina is the one she cherishes most.”

She was actually so vicious!

The music on stage was gradually reaching the intermission.

“It’s too late…” I gritted my teeth.

I sprang up violently. I slammed my head hard into the bridge of the nose of the boy holding me down.

He cried out in pain and let go.

I shoved Steve aside and charged toward the control console.

“Stop him! Stop him now!” Steve roared.

But I was blinded by rage. I had to shut down this machine!

Just as my hand was about to touch the emergency stop button, a foot slammed hard into my lower back.

Agonizing pain shot through me, as I collapsed to the floor.

Tina had somehow made her way to the control room as well, and she stared at me with a ferocious expression.

“You old fool, do you want to die too?!”

By the time I finished giving my statement at the police station, the sky was already pitch dark.I dragged my exhausted body back home.Standing in front of Anya’s door, I took a deep breath before reaching for my keys. The door opened.Anya was curled up in the corner of her bed, her eyes red and swollen from crying. When she saw me come in, she jerked her head away and refused to look at me.“How much longer are you going to keep me locked up?“My dreams are ruined… completely ruined…“Dad, I hate you.”Hearing that word “hate,” my heart gave a sharp twinge. But I did not explain myself. I just turned on the TV and tuned to the local news channel. The news was airing a live report from the scene of the anniversary celebration accident. The footage of Vera, Steve, and Tina being taken away, along with Mr. Zimmer’s furious accusations, was replayed over and over.Anya froze. She stared intently at the screen, watching the close-up of the snapped wire and Charlotte being

“Mr. Sommer… he didn’t know… I… “Anya couldn’t make it, and I was afraid the show would be canceled, so I secretly put on her clothes to stand in for her…“No one knew it was me. They… they were trying to harm Anya…”I let out a long sigh. My back was already soaked with cold sweat. So that was how it was.Thank goodness, thank goodness I had laid down a cushion.Otherwise, this kind-hearted girl would have died today, and I would have carried that guilt for the rest of my life. After hearing his daughter’s words, Mr. Zimmer’s eyes welled up with tears. He gently patted his daughter’s hand. Then, he suddenly stood up and kicked Vera hard in the calf.“You beast!”Vera was knocked to her knees by the kick. She clutched her leg and screamed in agony.“Mr. Zimmer… please spare my life! I really didn’t know it was Charlotte!“If it had been Anya, would you have dared to kill her?!”Mr. Zimmer roared, “That’s your own flesh and blood! Even a tiger wouldn’t eat its own cubs. Yo

That single word, “Charlotte,” left Vera and Steve frozen in place.Vera’s mouth fell open. Her mind went completely blank.Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s only daughter, Charlotte Zimmer? She mechanically turned her head to look at me.I stood where I was, returning her gaze with a cold stare.“Vera, weren’t you crying so hard just a moment ago? Why aren’t you crying anymore?”On the stretcher, the school nurse removed the mask from the girl’s face. The face that was revealed was delicate and pale, but it was definitely not my daughter, Anya.It was Mr. Zimmer’s pride and joy, Charlotte Zimmer.Vera felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her whole body went limp, and she collapsed to the ground.Steve was so terrified his legs gave way, and he dropped straight to his knees.Tina covered her mouth, the malice in her eyes giving way to utter terror. How could it be Charlotte?Mr. Zimmer’s fierce eyes filled with tears as he scanned the room. His gaze was so fierce it seemed

The shove was so forceful that Vera staggered back several steps.“You lunatic! How dare you push me?”Vera clutched her chest, unable to believe what had happened.I ignored her and turned to shout at the school nurse. “Hurry up and help her! There’s an air cushion down there!”“Air cushion?”Vera and Steve spoke at the same time. Their voices filled with terror. The school nurses immediately rushed over to check on her.Due to the massive impact, a section of the stage floor had caved in. It was perfectly flat before.I rushed over and ripped away the decorative carpet covering it.Beneath it lay a thick layer of professional protective padding! After I went back in time, aside from locking Anya inside the house, I had also paid the stage crew to install an air cushion underneath.I was afraid that, just in case I could not stop the performance, someone else might use their power to exert pressure. The tragedy of my previous life must not be repeated.“She’s breathing! I

“Ah! Someone fell!”“Call an ambulance quickly! Someone’s been killed!”The two boys holding me were so shocked that they went stiff. Their grip loosened.I shoved them aside forcefully and stumbled toward the stage.Steve and Tina stood where they were, exchanging a glance as a smirk of triumph flashed in their eyes.Tina even muttered under her breath, “Finally dead, that eyesore.”I did not have time to pay attention to that vicious father-daughter duo and charged straight onto the stage. In the center of the stage, the figure that had fallen lay curled up on the ground, motionless.A circle of teachers and students had already gathered around, but no one dared to approach.“Everyone, step back! Don’t touch her!” I roared as I pushed through the crowd.Just as I was about to rush over to check on her injuries, a heart-wrenching voice instantly echoed throughout the venue via the microphone.“What a tragedy! What a terrible tragedy!”Vera rushed forward.Without so much

“Tina…” I gritted my teeth. My mouth filled with the taste of metallic blood.“What you’re doing is illegal! This is murder!”“Murder?” Tina grinned.“Sir, you can put anything you want in your mouth, but you can’t just say whatever comes to mind. This was just an unfortunate accident.“Mom’s got everything arranged. As long as Anya is dead and the compensation is paid, who’s going to investigate a broken steel wire?”The word “Mom” rolled off her tongue so effortlessly. My heart felt like it was being shredded in a meat grinder.“You call her ‘Mom’… Have you two been reunited for a long time?”“Of course.” Tina raised her eyebrows smugly.“Ever since I was born, Mom has doted on me the most.“She said that idiot Anya is just like you, dull and boring. I’m the only one she’s proud of.“You know what? I told her I wanted to see Anya fly high in the sky, only to crash and burn.“Mom agreed without a second thought and even praised me for being creative.”“Beasts… your whole
