Chapter 1

“Fake your own death to get out of this. After that, freeze all his accounts and take back the house.

“If he’s still single for you three years from now, you’ll both pass the test. Are you up for it?”

She laughed.

“Why wouldn’t I pass it?

“John loves me to death. Let alone three years, even after thirty years, he’ll stay faithful to me.”

At that moment, she turned and raised an eyebrow at the school heartthrob in the passenger seat.

“What did I tell you?”

I crushed the bread in my hand.

Raine Shane looked at me. “All right, I’m here to take you and Trevor home.

“Where’s Trevor?”

“He’s dead.”

I looked up. “Three years ago, none of the cards would let me withdraw money. He didn’t have the money for surgery, so he died.”

...

Raine froze.

She began to look around the garbage dump.

Apart from the overwhelming stench, I was the only person clutching moldy stale bread in his hands.

I had loved that child with every fiber of my being.

No matter what I did, I always took Trevor with me.

“Don’t joke around like that.”

When Raine spoke, there was a momentary flicker of panic. “I’m serious. I’m here to take you both home.”

“Home?”

I looked up with my reddened eyes. “Three years ago, when you faked your death, they said you still owed a huge debt and had even mortgaged our wedding home.

“Trevor and I were left homeless and wandering for so long. What home would we even have now?”

She stammered for a moment before finally speaking.

“Well… that was just a test. Don’t worry. I’ve always had that house in my possession. All right! Tell Trevor to stop playing hide-and-seek. Let him come out. I’ll apologize to him.”

“Go ahead then!”

A death certificate was flung in her face.

“Apologize to Trevor in the afterlife!”

When the death certificate landed in her hand, her hand trembled slightly.

“Trevor...”

She looked at the conclusion on the certificate. “Sudden death from acute heart disease”. Her eyes instantly filled with tears.

“I was only gone for three years. How could Trevor be gone already?!

“You are lying to me, right?”

Raine gripped my shoulders. “I know I was wrong. Don’t punish me by putting on a show. Let Trevor come out!”

I just looked at her.

I sneered.

The hand clutching mine trembled.

Raine looked at me and began to cry.

“Raine, can’t you see that this is such an obvious scam?”

Griffin Logan picked up the death certificate.

“Look, doesn’t this look just like the one I forged for you three years ago?”

As he spoke, he pointed to the stamped section.

“It’s not even as good as the one I forged for you.

“Here, stamps aren’t usually stamped like this.”

He snorted derisively as he looked at me. “Mr. Davey, we’ve both been through this before. Why are you trying to fool us with something like this? Aren’t you like some amateur fooling around in front of a professional?”

Only then did Raine snap out of it.

Griffin continued to point things out to her.

“Look at the signature. Can’t you tell how stiff and unnatural it is? This form too. It’s obviously been deliberately made to look old.

“Don’t you know the procedure from three years ago? Mr. Davey is actually quite experienced. He even anticipated that you’d come back to find him today, so he dressed in rags and waited for you by the heap of trash.”

“You’re spouting nonsense!”

My eyes burned with anger.

Raine merely frowned.

So, he shamelessly teamed up with Raine’s henchmen to fabricate fake news, making it seem as though Trevor and I had brought our deaths upon ourselves.“You scoundrel!”Griffin lunged at me.“Wouldn’t it have been better if you’d died?! If you’d died, everything would have been settled! Why did you have to come back to life?!”Smack!A slap hit him hard across the face.Raine looked at him, panting heavily.“I thought you were just jealous, but I never imagined you’d go this far!”I smiled bitterly. So, Raine had known all along that Griffin was jealous.Yet she had still agreed to his jealousy-fueled wager. From the very beginning, our relationship had been marred by her unwillingness to accept things as they were.Raine turned to look at me.With tears in her eyes, she reached out to me.“John, I didn’t know. I really didn’t know...“I agreed to that bet only... to make him give up on me!”“Was that really the case, or were you secretly hoping to have an affair with h

Before long, a court summons was delivered to her.Raine was a little puzzled. At that moment, she saw me in the plaintiff’s seat.“John!”She stood up in disbelief.“Is that you?”I walked past her without a flicker of emotion and took my seat.“John, you’re not dead...”I ignored her.“I’m here to accuse Raine and Griffin, in collusion with Maurice, of causing my son’s death by fright.”Hearing my accusation, Raine frowned.“What are you talking about?”I did not say a word.Instead, I produced Trevor’s death certificate.“Cardiac arrest caused by shock. That day happened the day Trevor went to Mr. Maurice Logan’s house.“Here’s the surveillance footage from that time.”Raine frowned as she looked at it.It was an old residential complex.Trevor had just stepped through Maurice’s front door.Moments later, he ran out, crying hysterically in terror.Behind him, a man wearing a ghost mask appeared in the doorway. He slowly removed the mask to reveal Griffin’s face.

“I just can’t accept the fact that you ended up marrying someone else! So what?!”Raine looked at the man standing before her.Suddenly, she smiled.“Don’t forget. You were the one who initiated the breakup back then. You were the one who said I wasn’t good enough for your future.“But I do regret it now.”Griffin’s eyes were red. “Who hasn’t misjudged someone when they were young?“Raine, you didn’t even give me a chance to make amends before you got together with someone else. It’s only natural that I’d be jealous, isn’t it?“Don’t you dare say there’s not a single trace of me left in your heart!“If that were true, how could you have agreed to my wager? How could you bear to do such a ridiculous thing to him?“If you truly loved him with all your heart, you wouldn’t have been able to bring yourself to put him through three years of torment!”Smack!A hard slap landed squarely on his face.Raine looked down at him from above with her teary eyes. A pitiful smile played at

She had not taken those words seriously. When she eventually ran her car off a cliff again, I had jumped off the cliff without hesitation. However, I was stopped by others. After she woke up, she gave up that hobby completely. From then on, she was very careful with herself. She said, “If I’m going to die, I’ll die after you. I won’t let you go alone.”But for Griffin’s sake and for the sake of a bet, she had broken that promise so easily. She asked herself, “Why were you not afraid back then that he might commit suicide for you?”Oh, right. There was Trevor. She remembered that I, John, loved children so much.Even if she died, I would definitely go on living. That meant she had won her bet with Griffin. She smiled.Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. The door swung open.Griffin rushed over in a panic.“Raine! I’ve been doxxed! The whole internet is calling for my death, and people are blocking my path wherever I go!“But I really didn’t know something woul

Raine snatched a police officer’s gun right out of his hand. She aimed it straight at me.Bang! The bullet struck my chest, sending a spray of blood flying.I staggered. My grip on Griffin’s hand loosened. Before falling off the cliff, I turned my head and flashed Raine a smile. Then, I plummeted straight down.Raine froze in place. In front of the live stream camera.“Trevor” took off the hat.It was a little girl.“Congratulations, madam. Now, you’ve killed your husband with your own hands, too.”The police frowned at Raine.“The child is technically correct. What’s going on here?”The police officer grabbed the gun from Raine’s hand. She stared in disbelief at the unfamiliar girl standing before her.She had the exact same build and age as Trevor.“Who are you?”She heard her own voice trembling.“I was Teddy’s fellow patient.”Teddy was Trevor’s nickname.“Fellow patient?”The girl nodded. “He passed away a year ago. Sudden death.”The girl wiped away her te

Raine stared at me coldly.“I knew it. With a father like you, Trevor has learned to lie too!“If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve taken Trevor with me three years ago!“Where is he? I’m taking him to live with me! Griffin and I will raise this child together! It’s better than having you ruin his whole life!”“Fine!”I brought out the urn and stared at them as my eyes stung.“In that case, you’d better educate him properly in the afterlife!”They looked at the portrait on the urn.Raine stared at me in disbelief. My clenched fists trembled slightly.Trevor had died a year ago. This was the last little home I had built for him with all my savings. But that little home was shattered the very next second.I let out a furious roar and lunged forward.“Trevor! “Have you had enough of this nonsense?!”Raine grabbed me by the collar.“How many more times are you going to pull this stunt?”She snatched the ashes from my hands. “Charcoal powder mixed into bone shaped mol
