As I was rummaging through the trash for leftovers, my wife, who had died three years ago, suddenly showed up. She stepped out of the Voyce and looked down at me from above. “Honey, you really did pass my test.” I was holding some moldy stale bread. I stared at her in bewilderment. It turned out that three years ago, at a class reunion, the school heartthrob she had once dated had suggested it. “I wanted to see if your love is real.”

Chapter 1

“Fake your own death to get out of this. After that, freeze all his accounts and take back the house.

“If he’s still single for you three years from now, you’ll both pass the test. Are you up for it?”

She laughed.

“Why wouldn’t I pass it?

“John loves me to death. Let alone three years, even after thirty years, he’ll stay faithful to me.”

At that moment, she turned and raised an eyebrow at the school heartthrob in the passenger seat.

“What did I tell you?”

I crushed the bread in my hand.

Raine Shane looked at me. “All right, I’m here to take you and Trevor home.

“Where’s Trevor?”

“He’s dead.”

I looked up. “Three years ago, none of the cards would let me withdraw money. He didn’t have the money for surgery, so he died.”

...

Raine froze.

She began to look around the garbage dump.

Apart from the overwhelming stench, I was the only person clutching moldy stale bread in his hands.

I had loved that child with every fiber of my being.

No matter what I did, I always took Trevor with me.

“Don’t joke around like that.”

When Raine spoke, there was a momentary flicker of panic. “I’m serious. I’m here to take you both home.”

“Home?”

I looked up with my reddened eyes. “Three years ago, when you faked your death, they said you still owed a huge debt and had even mortgaged our wedding home.

“Trevor and I were left homeless and wandering for so long. What home would we even have now?”

She stammered for a moment before finally speaking.

“Well… that was just a test. Don’t worry. I’ve always had that house in my possession. All right! Tell Trevor to stop playing hide-and-seek. Let him come out. I’ll apologize to him.”

“Go ahead then!”

A death certificate was flung in her face.

“Apologize to Trevor in the afterlife!”

When the death certificate landed in her hand, her hand trembled slightly.

“Trevor...”

She looked at the conclusion on the certificate. “Sudden death from acute heart disease”. Her eyes instantly filled with tears.

“I was only gone for three years. How could Trevor be gone already?!

“You are lying to me, right?”

Raine gripped my shoulders. “I know I was wrong. Don’t punish me by putting on a show. Let Trevor come out!”

I just looked at her.

I sneered.

The hand clutching mine trembled.

Raine looked at me and began to cry.

“Raine, can’t you see that this is such an obvious scam?”

Griffin Logan picked up the death certificate.

“Look, doesn’t this look just like the one I forged for you three years ago?”

As he spoke, he pointed to the stamped section.

“It’s not even as good as the one I forged for you.

“Here, stamps aren’t usually stamped like this.”

He snorted derisively as he looked at me. “Mr. Davey, we’ve both been through this before. Why are you trying to fool us with something like this? Aren’t you like some amateur fooling around in front of a professional?”

Only then did Raine snap out of it.

Griffin continued to point things out to her.

“Look at the signature. Can’t you tell how stiff and unnatural it is? This form too. It’s obviously been deliberately made to look old.

“Don’t you know the procedure from three years ago? Mr. Davey is actually quite experienced. He even anticipated that you’d come back to find him today, so he dressed in rags and waited for you by the heap of trash.”

“You’re spouting nonsense!”

My eyes burned with anger.

Raine merely frowned.
