Chapter 3

Author: Eggtart
Frank rose to his feet in anger. Before he left, he lowered the temperature of the cold storage room by another ten degrees.

I shivered uncontrollably from the freezing cold.

While I was dazed, I thought I saw my own soul.

My “soul” was covered in blood. It stood in the darkness and pleaded with me repeatedly not to leave it behind.

I did not want to die. I clearly had a chance to be saved.

Why was fate so cruel to me? Why did Lucy refuse to believe me?

I let out a desperate scream as a crushing sense of helplessness filled my heart.

My chances of being rescued were becoming incredibly slim.

My breathing grew weaker, and it felt as though all the blood in my body had frozen.

Just then, someone opened the door to the cold storage room again and turned on the lights.

The sight of me lying in a pool of blood startled her.

I used every ounce of strength I had to inch forward and force out the words, “Help... Help me.”

Sarah was so frightened that even her voice trembled, “Who are you? What did you do to make the CEO throw you in here as punishment?”

She looked at me with extreme caution.

“I-I’m Lucy’s husband.”

I held out my blood-covered hand with great difficulty. My watch was stained so badly that its original appearance was no longer recognizable.

“This is the one-of-a-kind watch she gave me.”

When Sarah saw my wedding ring, she recognized who I was. She was about to help me up when she hesitated. Then, she took out her phone and called Lucy.

“Ms. Hathaway, I came to pick up some goods and found your husband here. He’s covered in blood. Should I take him to the hospital immediately?”

Lucy sounded extremely puzzled.

“Blood? He actually hurt Frank’s snake so badly that there’s blood all over the ground?! No wonder Frank is so upset.”

Lucy became even more convinced of her assumptions.

“Don’t take him to the hospital. That isn’t his blood. He’s perfectly fine. I’ll pick him up myself when the time comes.”

Sarah was about to explain further, but Lucy ruthlessly hung up on her.

She helplessly walked past me to collect the goods. Unexpectedly, she later came back for me.

It seemed that she had struggled with the decision for quite some time.

“You’re injured. I can’t just stand by and watch you die. I’ll take this as doing a good deed.”

She dragged me out of the cold storage room and called me an ambulance.

The moment I was finally rescued, I felt relieved for the first time.

When I arrived at the hospital, there was no available equipment to perform my surgery.

Lucy was worried that something might go wrong during Alan’s surgery, so she had reserved every piece of necessary equipment at the hospital for him.

My condition was critical. For my safety, the doctors had no choice but to transfer me to a fully equipped private hospital.

The doctor found a contact in my phone labeled [Wife] and called the number.

“Hello, is this Larry’s wife? Please come over to the private hospital immediately. The patient was in a car accident. He’s in a very serious condition. He could go into shock at any moment.”

Lucy was clearly getting impatient. She raised her voice and shouted angrily, “Larry, you really are something! You actually hired someone to help convince me you escaped!

“I’m telling you now, you can pull every trick in the book, but I’m not coming over! I know your health better than anyone. There’s no way anything could have happened to you.

“Stay where you are and behave yourself. Stop resorting to despicable tricks just to make others sick.”

The doctor looked at me with deep sympathy before turning to a colleague.

“Let’s transfer him to the private hospital first. We’ll figure out the rest once we have the equipment.”

However, I never expected to be taken to the same hospital where Alan was admitted.

No matter how the doctors pleaded, Lucy refused to give up even a single set of equipment.

Through the wall, I heard Lucy’s cold and heartless words.

“It doesn’t matter who they are. I won’t let Alan lose even the slightest chance of regaining his sight. Nothing can go wrong!”

My entire body collapsed onto the floor like a lifeless heap. Just then, I locked eyes with someone standing outside the door.

At that moment, Lucy looked like a dog reduced to the most humiliating state imaginable. My mother hated her and gave her a hard kick.“You want to take Larry home so that you can torture him until he wishes he were dead all over again, huh?“Listen here. You’re getting off easy with Hathaway Group’s bankruptcy. I honestly wish I could tear you apart piece by piece and make you suffer everything Larry went through!”I patted my mother’s back in an effort to calm her down.Lucy’s eyes were swollen and teary. Like a dog begging for mercy, she crawled over to me and pleaded, “Larry, I came to take you home this time because I wanted to treat you right. “I let greed cloud my judgment before this, and that made me treat you so terribly. When I found out you had died, I wished that I could die with you. I can’t live without you! “Please forgive me this once, okay? My grandfather founded Hathaway Group at a young age. I can’t be the one who lets it fall apart.”I looked at her with

It was Lucy! I waved my hand to signal for everyone else in the conference room to leave. The moment Lucy saw me, her eyes instantly turned bloodshot.Rushing over, she grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward her.“Larry, why did you fake your death? Do you have any idea how worried I was? I knew it. You value your life too much to actually let yourself die.”Then, her expression turned serious as she looked around the room. “How did you get in here? Do you realize that ordinary people aren’t allowed in this place? Even I have a hard time getting access.”Then, as if she had suddenly run out of patience, she waved her hand dismissively.“Forget it. I don’t care how you managed to get in here. You’re coming home with me now.”She looked down at my legs. “Did you hurt your legs? Why are you limping?“Larry, you never should have run away on your own. I told you I’d come for you.”She turned around and tried to take me away.At the mention of my legs, the hatred I had buried d

“In a way, it’s a blessing. At least you didn’t lose your life. God’s been merciful to you.“It’s okay. We can get you prosthetic legs.” My mother let out a soft sigh and felt pained on my behalf.“But if you’re heartbroken because of that woman, there’s really no need to be!“I never agreed to you being with her in the first place. You were so stubborn that you would rather cut ties with me than give her up.”I looked up. Seeing my mother’s aged face after so many years, I could not stop myself from crying.“Mom, I was wrong. Please forgive me,” I said through my sobs.“I’m not heartbroken because of her. I just couldn’t handle losing my legs...”My mother gently wiped away my tears.“Silly child. You’re my only precious son. How could I ever refuse to forgive you?”Then, a fierce look appeared in her eyes, and she clenched her fists. “Lucy actually dared to hurt you like this! She must have a death wish!“Don’t worry, Larry. I’ll make sure she pays for what she did to you

Lucy’s eyes turned wide with shock. She staggered back a little but quickly forced herself to calm down.“How could that be possible?! He was perfectly fine when I left. Didn’t I tell you not to believe anything he says?!” Michael was so frightened that he hunched over. His voice trembled as he spoke. “They found Mr. Fisherman’s body outside the cold storage room. They’ve tested his DNA. It was Lucy’s secretary, Michael. The moment he saw me, his eyes widened in shock. He was not sure if it was really me at first.I tried to speak in a hoarse voice, but he hurried over to Lucy instead.“Ms. Hathaway, there’s a man out there covered in blood. He looks like Mr. Fisherman...”Lucy frowned deeply. She rubbed her fingertips together and spoke matter-of-factly. “That’s impossible. He’s locked in a cold storage room right now. There’s no way he can get here.”Michael tried to persuade her by whispering, “Why don’t we check? What if it really is Mr. Fisherman? If it is, he could be in serious danger.”Lucy shot Michael a fierce glare.“I already told you it’s impossible! If it were him, he would never be this quiet. He would’ve barged in here and demanded to know why I wasn’t keeping him company. “Besides, he only cares about himself and would never let himself end up covered in blood!”Meanwhile, the doctors insisted that Lucy release one set of equipment. But she u
