Chapter 1

I stared at the photo on the screen. No faces were visible, only a pair of hands tightly intertwined.

The man had long, slender fingers with well-defined knuckles, while the woman's fingers were adorned with delicately manicured nails.

But on the inside of the woman's wrist was a faint, thin raised scar, looking like a light-colored centipede lying beneath her skin.

Most people probably wouldn't have noticed such a tiny detail, but there was no way I could mistake it.

It was the mark left behind from the day I pulled her back from the brink of death.

Clara Lowden and I were childhood sweethearts.

We were in the same class from elementary school through high school.

Back then, she wasn't the sophisticated and capable career woman she had become later.

She used to be gloomy, withdrawn, and timid, like someone who had spent years hiding from the world. She always kept her head down, her bangs falling over her eyes, and barely spoke to anyone.

The girls in our class excluded her and even bullied her. I was the only one who was willing to stand by her and be her friend.

When someone threw her textbooks into the trash, I would pick them up for her. When she was hungry, I would share my sandwich with her.

In eighth grade, her parents went through a bitter divorce. Her hot-tempered father took out his anger on her, beating and kicking her whenever he lost control.

Under the constant abuse, Clara developed severe depression.

I still remember that stormy afternoon.

I was worried about her, so I climbed over the wall into her family's yard to find her. Through the first-floor bathroom window, I saw a horrifying sight.

Clara was lying in the bathtub, the water around her stained a shocking red.

There was a deep cut on her wrist from a box cutter.

I smashed the window, rushed inside, and wrapped a towel around her wrist to stop the bleeding.

Lying in the hospital bed, Clara's face was pale as a sheet. She looked at me with hollow eyes and asked, "Gavin, will you leave me?"

I hugged her, tears welling in my eyes, and swore, "Clara, I'll never leave you."

From that day on, I became the only light in her life.

I went to therapy sessions with her, made sure she took her medication, and stayed by her side through countless nights when she struggled with thoughts of ending her life.

That scar was a mark of what her depression had put her through, but it was also a symbol of the bond we had forged through life and death.

After graduating from high school, we naturally got together.

Even though we attended different colleges because we chose different majors, those four years never weakened our relationship.

We got married after graduation and have been together for four years ever since.

I thought she loved me deeply.

Whenever my stomach problems acted up, she would take care of me with the utmost care. Even the slightest frown from me would leave her worried for hours.

I had always believed I was the happiest man alive, until I saw that photo on Instagram.

A familiar scar in the image stopped me cold. The post came with a shocking confession.

"My best friend's wife is pregnant with my child."

I watched her through the glass in silence. This was the woman I had loved for over a decade—the woman whose life I had saved twice."Clara, do you know?" I finally spoke, my voice calm as it echoed through the empty room. "That day at the theme park... if you had told me the truth right away and shown even the slightest bit of remorse... maybe I'd have only asked for a breakup and let you go."But what did you do instead? You enjoyed the life you had with me while still holding on to the one you built with Gavin. You kept lying to me, all just to protect yourself." Clara closed her eyes sorrowfully as tears streamed down her face."Tom... I was wrong. I know I was wrong. Please, give me one more chance. I'm begging you. For the sake of everything we've been through since we were kids..." pleaded Clara. My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall."Clara, do you remember what you asked me all those years ago?"I slowly stepped closer to the glass, staring into her eyes as I sai

I pressed charges against Clara for bigamy and fraud.Although the fake marriage certificate allowed her to slip through a legal loophole, she and Gavin had lived as husband and wife for years and even had a child together. There was no denying that she had committed bigamy. On the afternoon the court summons was issued, I received a call from an unknown number. The moment I answered, Clara's panicked cries and Gavin's angry shouting came through the phone."Tom Rieger! Are you happy now? Do you have to push us to the edge?" Gavin roared. "My reputation is ruined! How is my child supposed to hold her head up after this? You're a monster!""I'm a monster?" I said coldly. "Gavin, when you flaunted the life you stole from me online and sent anonymous accusations to my company, did you give a damn about my reputation? Did you even care how much damage you were doing to me?""I'll kill you! I swear I'll kill you!" Gavin exploded.A heavy crash came from the other end of the line, fo

I returned to my hometown that very night, back to my parents'.I locked myself in my room, refusing to eat or drink, just mindlessly scrolling through my phone.Knowing Gavin's character, he was never the type to let something like this slide. Sure enough, early the next morning, I received a call from my boss."Tom, what's going on?" my boss asked, his tone heavy and serious. "Someone sent an anonymous email to the company with photos attached, accusing you of being the other man."I couldn't help but sneer inwardly, "Gavin, I knew you'd pull this trick."I explained to my boss, "Sir, I'm not the other man. I'll handle this properly. To avoid bringing any trouble to the company, I'd like to submit my resignation."After hanging up, I checked every social media platform and local forum I could find.Gavin had already spread the article smearing me across every major social platform. He even paid people to dig up my personal information, exposing my real name and workplace onl

Those words struck Clara like a devastating blow. She jerked her head up. Her face turned pale instantly, and her eyes flickered with shock. When Clara was in middle school, her parents went through a messy divorce. She had tried to stop them, only to be beaten black and blue by her father and thrown out of the house.I happened to see her on the street while taking out the trash, so I brought her into my house and settled her in the guest room. She sat there trembling, refusing to say a word.Later that night, when I returned to my room, she suddenly grabbed my arm, looking at me with the same sorrow and desperation in her eyes."Tom, are you going to abandon me, too?"I snapped back to reality when Clara suddenly shoved Gavin away and threw herself at my feet, clutching my legs as her voice broke with tears."No... No, Tom, that's not true! I'm not abandoning you! I've never wanted to leave you! Tom, please don't look at me like that. Please... don't leave me..."She broke do

Their so-called home was a luxury riverfront residence in Hilburg, one of the most prestigious addresses in town. The moment I stepped inside, I let out a bitter laugh. The interior was almost identical to my home. No, to be precise, that place felt warmer, more like a real home than the one I had with Clara. In the entryway sat the smart shoe cabinet with motion sensors that I had recently been eyeing online but never got around to buying. Somehow, it was already installed there. On the coffee table in the living room was a scented candle from the niche brand I loved.Every little thing I'd ever mentioned to make our home more comfortable was right there. Then it hit me that Clara had been buying two of everything all along. One for our home, just to placate me. The other for that house, to make Gavin happy. The most painful irony was the huge wedding portrait hanging behind the couch. In the photo, Gavin was smiling brightly as Clara kissed his cheek, with the Ihory sunset

The moment Gavin saw me, his expression froze. His eyes widened in shock, his mouth fell open, and every trace of color drained from his face, leaving him terribly pale. His phone slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a loud clatter.Just then, Clara stepped out of the line with two ice creams in hand. "Naomi! Gavin! I got the ice cream!" She called out with a smile, then followed Gavin's frozen stare. When she spotted me just ten feet away, staring at her coldly, her smile died on her lips.Around us, the crowd remained lively, filled with laughter and chatter, while an unbearable silence settled between the three of us.Gavin looked at me as if he couldn't believe his eyes. He instinctively took half a step back and clutched the hem of his shirt.I gave them a polite smile that was almost unsettling in its calmness."Well, what a coincidence," I said flatly."I didn't expect to see you here." My voice was low, but every word carried. "Aren't you going to invite me
