Chapter 2

Author: Hanging Willow
Maeve was on the phone for half an hour. By the time she hung up with a smile on her lips, I was packing my bags.

“Where are you going?”

“To the hospital. I want to take care of my mom.”

She was stunned. Then, she pursed her lips.

“Your mother’s surgery is going to be delayed anyway. It’s fine if you’re not there.

“I’ll go and pay for the school fees tomorrow. Then, I’ll accompany Ethan to buy some supplies for his travels. He’s afraid that you’ll misunderstand, so he asks if you can join us.”

I did not stop packing my bags. I zipped my suitcase without any hesitation.

“It’s not the first time anyway. There’s nothing for me to misunderstand.”

“What?”

“From now on, you can spend all your time and money on him as you wish.”

I put on my shoes and glanced at her before I shut the door.

“Maeve, you can take care of your ex-husband on your own.

“I’ll tell my lawyer to send you the divorce agreement. I’m really curious to see whether you treat me as nicely as you treat Ethan when I become your ex-husband.”

In the hospital, my mother was unaware of what had happened.

She brought the cupcakes out and told me to take them back to Maeve the next day.

I did not react. Instead, I lay on the hospital cot and stared at the ceiling for the whole night.

The next day, a while after I sent out the divorce agreement, Ethan called me with a sigh.

“Asher, are you two still fighting?

“I’m sorry. I always cause trouble for you and Maeve. I didn’t want to be a burden…”

In the hallway, the patients and their families were walking past me in a hurry. I suddenly felt very irritated.

“Ethan, I’m very busy. I don’t have time for this.

“If you want to talk, you can talk to Maeve. She’s free. She can spend all day on you.”

I hung up and went to the cafeteria to buy some food for my mother.

When I was queuing, my phone rang again.

Maeve was trying to restrain her emotions as she questioned me.

“Asher, how many times do I have to tell you that Ethan has severe depression? I told you not to trigger him!

“How can you tell him that he’s a burden?”

I frowned in confusion.

“He said that himself.”

Maeve immediately exploded.

“Why aren’t you admitting to it? Do you know that because of this, Ethan has cut his wrist?

“How can you be this cruel? It’s a human life! Initially, I wanted to give him some hope with the lottery money. Now, it’s all ruined because of you!”

I immediately stopped in my tracks. Then, I walked out of the queue and said coldly, “You know that he has severe depression, and you also know he always calls himself a burden. I never said that to him.

“Besides, his life is not the only precious life out there. What about my mom?

“When we got married, your family didn’t even pay a single cent. Not only did my mother pay for our wedding, but she also took out one and a half million to pay for your debt!

“Now that you’ve won two and a half million dollars, you aren’t even willing to set aside just half a million for my mother’s treatment. How dare you accuse me of being cruel?”

She immediately fell silent.

Maeve tried to speak a few times but failed.

“I will definitely pay the money back to your mother. I’ll think of other ways to get money for her medical bills.”

I gritted my teeth. “Have you signed the divorce papers?”

“I won’t sign it. I won’t divorce you.”

Ethan suddenly called out her name. She said hurriedly, “You should calm down. After I’m done with Ethan’s things, I promise I’ll give you a proper explanation.”

Then, she ended the call.

I took a deep breath and bought some food for my mother.

My mother felt that something was wrong, so she asked if I was fighting with Maeve.

I shook my head and changed the topic.

However, over the five years of our marriage, Ethan had always been a source of conflict between us.

We were a married couple, but I was the one who paid for all of our expenses.

Of her thirty-thousand-dollar salary, she had to give Ethan twenty-five thousand. It was a condition she had willingly agreed to include in their divorce settlement.

On regular days, she would talk to him and accompany him to his therapy. Every season, she would go on trips with him to cheer him up.

She would immediately reply to his text messages. Whenever something happened, she would leave me alone and run to him.

Even when my mother had a fever late at night, she would take our only car to drive to Ethan because he was in a bad mood.

I fought and argued, but she would always give me the same excuse.

“Ethan’s depressed because of me! I can’t leave him alone!”

I forced out a smile and shook my head. “No, I just didn’t get a good sleep last night. “Mom, Maeve and I are fine. Don’t overthink this.” She relaxed a little after that. She ate her medicine and fell asleep. The surgery was a success. She recovered well in two weeks. Then, I took her home. I waited until she was a lot better before telling her everything. Initially, she was furious about everything. Then, she decided it was all in the past.“How did it end?”“The divorce is still in process, but she has admitted to all her wrongdoings, so it should go smoothly. “As for Ethan, he’s been sued for fraud. Even though Maeve was in the dark and is considered a victim, she still will be jailed for a year. They will try their best to pay us the money. “As for the house and luxury goods, it’s all sold.” My mother sighed. “As long as justice is served…” I nodded. I stood up and massaged her shoulders. When the sun filtered into the room, I thought of visiting Maeve fo

As she spoke, she grabbed my hand, but I flung it away.I turned to look at Ethan, who was hiding in the crowd. His face was covered in cold sweat. He had attempted to escape a few times, but the police officers were holding him down. “That’s impossible!”“What’s impossible?”“I can never trust you again, and he’s definitely not going overseas for his studies,” I said as I pointed at Ethan.“Ask him for the name of his school. What is he studying? How much is the school fee?“Maeve, how are you so stupid? What psychiatrist would ask for eighty thousand dollars for a two-hour session? Which dance teacher would charge five hundred thousand for dance classes? “What kind of education could possibly cost two and a half million dollars, which happens to be the exact amount you received from the lottery?” Maeve swallowed, then she looked over at Ethan. “Two and a half million dollars?!” Someone gasped in shock. “He’s not a millionaire! Why would he need so much money for just s

I took out the sales and purchase agreement from my bag and the receipts for the luxury goods. When I flashed them in front of her, Maeve’s face turned pale. “I indeed have very little contact with Ethan, but you contacted each other every single day!“Maeve, do you even have a heart? How dare you take the eighty thousand dollars that I borrowed to pay for his psychiatrist? “You even lied to me and said you had one and a half million dollars’ worth of debt. My mother paid that for you!“It’s the compensation she got when my father passed away from a car accident. It was all my mother had in her savings! “She gave all her money to you, and you used that money to buy luxury goods for your ex-husband!“Don’t you feel even a bit of shame?”Maeve’s eyes widened in shock. She subconsciously swallowed. “Where did you find these?”She reached out to take them from me. However, I dodged her attempt and put them back into the bag. The police officer, Ted Benson, asked her solemn

“Maeve?”“Ethan, we…” Maeve gritted her teeth. She looked torn, yet she had to tell him the truth. “We’re already divorced. I have a husband and a family now. It’s over between us. “When you’re overseas and find a woman that you like, you should pursue your own happiness…”Ethan also stood up. He grabbed her hand and became a little agitated. “But we’re meant for each other! If that weren’t so, you wouldn’t have abandoned Asher to take care of me all these years. What does it matter if you’re married? You can divorce him!“After all, it’s not the first time you’re getting a divorce. Once you divorce him, we can remarry!” Maeve pushed him away. However, when she saw that his emotions were not stable, she suppressed her feelings. After a while, the airport staff called for boarding. Maeve sighed and extracted her hand delicately. She helped him carry his suitcase. “You should go. Your future is waiting for you. “I have to go to the hospital later to take care of my m

It was a gloomy day. Maeve poured Ethan a glass of water. When she passed it to him, she whispered, “Be careful.” Ethan was watching some foreign news. He looked up at her and smiled. “Thank you. Sorry for troubling you again.”“You’re more than welcome.” She pointed at his bag. “Did you eat the medicine prescribed to you by the doctor yesterday?”A hint of panic flashed in Ethan’s eyes. Just as he was about to speak, Maeve took out the pill box from his bag and counted the pills. “The pills are untouched. Did you not take your medicine last night?”As she spoke, she took out other medicine too. All of them were untouched. He had not even opened the packaging. Maeve’s frown deepened. She popped a few pills out of their cover and passed them to Ethan. “How did you forget to take your medication again? How many times have I told you that you can’t stop your medication? Quick, eat them now.” Ethan looked away and gulped. Then, he said, “I’ll eat them on the plane. It’

“Asher, your house was already sold. Didn’t you know about that?”I gasped. “When did that happen?” “Last month. After deducting all the fines from late payment, it was sold for five hundred thousand dollars. “Maeve signed it. After she sold the house, she rented from the new owner for six months…”My grip loosened as my phone fell to the floor. My last hope was gone. Every step I took as I walked back to the hospital felt heavy. However, I could not stop. When the traffic light turned red, I snapped back to reality and opened Ethan’s social media.Last month, he posted a new breakdancing video every single day. I heard that he had hired one of the best breakdancing teachers and paid a hefty fee for private, one-on-one lessons, which only made the cost even higher.Maeve had liked every single video. She even commented with some supportive stickers. [Be confident and take it slow. I’ll always be here for you.]I was puzzled back then. He had not worked in years bec
