Chapter 4

Author: Hanging Willow
“Asher, your house was already sold. Didn’t you know about that?”

I gasped. “When did that happen?”

“Last month. After deducting all the fines from late payment, it was sold for five hundred thousand dollars.

“Maeve signed it. After she sold the house, she rented from the new owner for six months…”

My grip loosened as my phone fell to the floor.

My last hope was gone.

Every step I took as I walked back to the hospital felt heavy. However, I could not stop.

When the traffic light turned red, I snapped back to reality and opened Ethan’s social media.

Last month, he posted a new breakdancing video every single day.

I heard that he had hired one of the best breakdancing teachers and paid a hefty fee for private, one-on-one lessons, which only made the cost even higher.

Maeve had liked every single video. She even commented with some supportive stickers.

[Be confident and take it slow. I’ll always be here for you.]

I was puzzled back then.

He had not worked in years because of his depression. Maeve had been paying for everything for the past five years. So where had he gotten hundreds of thousands of dollars to hire a celebrity teacher?

I finally understood.

To boost his confidence and dissuade him from killing himself, Maeve had sold the house we bought together to hire a dance teacher for him.

Someone riding a bike ran into my calf. I felt numb.

I just answered the calls from the hospital like a robot as I repeated my apologies and promised to pay the fees soon. I begged them to not cancel the surgery.

After I hung up, I looked up at the darkened sky.

I thought I had met my true love when I dated Maeve.

However, after five years of marriage, I was left with nothing.

Suddenly, a thunderclap jolted me back to reality. I came back to my senses and returned to the hospital to take care of my mother.

That night, I called and asked all my relatives and friends if I could borrow some money from them. I still did not have enough by morning.

David sighed and said, “If Maeve didn’t have a debt back then, your mother’s savings would have been enough for the surgery.”

I suddenly sat upright.

When we were married, Maeve did not have a house, a car, or a gambling addiction. I wondered how she had a debt.

I clicked on Ethan’s social media account again.

Ten minutes ago, he had posted an update.

[Very soon, I’ll study overseas. It’s a shame to leave my house empty, so if you’re interested in renting, please contact me.]

How did he own a house?

Maeve had told me that she and Ethan used to live in a rented apartment.

The more I thought about it, the more I felt something did not click. I went home and pried Maeve’s desk open.

She had a habit of keeping every single record when it came to money. There was a stack of receipts. Some of them came from the dance teacher.

When I flipped to the very end, there was a sales and purchase agreement for a house.

[One million dollars. The property owner: Ethan Reid.]

That was her debt.

I was overwhelmed with anger all of a sudden. I wanted to take out my phone and take some photos for my lawyer when I suddenly saw a few receipts from luxury brands.

Watches, belts, tux…

All of them added up to almost five hundred thousand dollars.

In the right corner, Maeve had left a note.

[I overlooked your feelings during our marriage. After this, I will treat you well.]

I gaped and stared at everything in disbelief as I reread them. Then, I looked at the purchase date.

It was in the second month of our marriage.

We had just come back from our honeymoon, and I was hopeful about our future when she told me solemnly about Ethan’s depression.

Since then, I was the one trapped by Ethan’s depression.

I finally realized that the one and a half million she got from my mother for her so-called debt was to fund the house for Ethan and buy luxury goods for him.

For so many years, she had not been doing it out of guilt. It was clear that things were not over between them.

I was stuck in the middle and had wasted five years of my life.

A shiver ran down my spine. I had completely given up on her by that point.

I swallowed and took photos of all the receipts for my lawyer. Then, I called the police.

“Hello, I want to make a police report. I was scammed out of at least one and a half million dollars. Now, the culprit is escaping on a plane. Please help me stop him!”

I forced out a smile and shook my head. “No, I just didn’t get a good sleep last night. “Mom, Maeve and I are fine. Don’t overthink this.” She relaxed a little after that. She ate her medicine and fell asleep. The surgery was a success. She recovered well in two weeks. Then, I took her home. I waited until she was a lot better before telling her everything. Initially, she was furious about everything. Then, she decided it was all in the past.“How did it end?”“The divorce is still in process, but she has admitted to all her wrongdoings, so it should go smoothly. “As for Ethan, he’s been sued for fraud. Even though Maeve was in the dark and is considered a victim, she still will be jailed for a year. They will try their best to pay us the money. “As for the house and luxury goods, it’s all sold.” My mother sighed. “As long as justice is served…” I nodded. I stood up and massaged her shoulders. When the sun filtered into the room, I thought of visiting Maeve fo

As she spoke, she grabbed my hand, but I flung it away.I turned to look at Ethan, who was hiding in the crowd. His face was covered in cold sweat. He had attempted to escape a few times, but the police officers were holding him down. “That’s impossible!”“What’s impossible?”“I can never trust you again, and he’s definitely not going overseas for his studies,” I said as I pointed at Ethan.“Ask him for the name of his school. What is he studying? How much is the school fee?“Maeve, how are you so stupid? What psychiatrist would ask for eighty thousand dollars for a two-hour session? Which dance teacher would charge five hundred thousand for dance classes? “What kind of education could possibly cost two and a half million dollars, which happens to be the exact amount you received from the lottery?” Maeve swallowed, then she looked over at Ethan. “Two and a half million dollars?!” Someone gasped in shock. “He’s not a millionaire! Why would he need so much money for just s

I took out the sales and purchase agreement from my bag and the receipts for the luxury goods. When I flashed them in front of her, Maeve’s face turned pale. “I indeed have very little contact with Ethan, but you contacted each other every single day!“Maeve, do you even have a heart? How dare you take the eighty thousand dollars that I borrowed to pay for his psychiatrist? “You even lied to me and said you had one and a half million dollars’ worth of debt. My mother paid that for you!“It’s the compensation she got when my father passed away from a car accident. It was all my mother had in her savings! “She gave all her money to you, and you used that money to buy luxury goods for your ex-husband!“Don’t you feel even a bit of shame?”Maeve’s eyes widened in shock. She subconsciously swallowed. “Where did you find these?”She reached out to take them from me. However, I dodged her attempt and put them back into the bag. The police officer, Ted Benson, asked her solemn

“Maeve?”“Ethan, we…” Maeve gritted her teeth. She looked torn, yet she had to tell him the truth. “We’re already divorced. I have a husband and a family now. It’s over between us. “When you’re overseas and find a woman that you like, you should pursue your own happiness…”Ethan also stood up. He grabbed her hand and became a little agitated. “But we’re meant for each other! If that weren’t so, you wouldn’t have abandoned Asher to take care of me all these years. What does it matter if you’re married? You can divorce him!“After all, it’s not the first time you’re getting a divorce. Once you divorce him, we can remarry!” Maeve pushed him away. However, when she saw that his emotions were not stable, she suppressed her feelings. After a while, the airport staff called for boarding. Maeve sighed and extracted her hand delicately. She helped him carry his suitcase. “You should go. Your future is waiting for you. “I have to go to the hospital later to take care of my m

It was a gloomy day. Maeve poured Ethan a glass of water. When she passed it to him, she whispered, “Be careful.” Ethan was watching some foreign news. He looked up at her and smiled. “Thank you. Sorry for troubling you again.”“You’re more than welcome.” She pointed at his bag. “Did you eat the medicine prescribed to you by the doctor yesterday?”A hint of panic flashed in Ethan’s eyes. Just as he was about to speak, Maeve took out the pill box from his bag and counted the pills. “The pills are untouched. Did you not take your medicine last night?”As she spoke, she took out other medicine too. All of them were untouched. He had not even opened the packaging. Maeve’s frown deepened. She popped a few pills out of their cover and passed them to Ethan. “How did you forget to take your medication again? How many times have I told you that you can’t stop your medication? Quick, eat them now.” Ethan looked away and gulped. Then, he said, “I’ll eat them on the plane. It’
