Chapter 3

Author: Hanging Willow
I was disappointed too many times. My disappointment snowballed into despair.

However, what I regretted the most was marrying her without a care just because she treated me well back then.

My mother felt bad that I was the only one contributing to the marriage, so she took out her savings to help Maeve to repay her debt.

She thought that it would help us live a good life. However, that did not come true.

After the meal, the nurse suddenly approached me and said that my card no longer had money in it.

My mind went blank.

I had used up all my savings for my mother’s illness. The eighty thousand dollars in my card was money that I borrowed from friends with much difficulty. I was planning to use it as a deposit for the surgery.

I quickly called Maeve, yet she hung up on me. I called her ten times, but she declined my call.

Just as I was about to call the police, she sent me a text.

[I’ve transferred the money out of the card. Ethan’s depression is getting more serious. I’ve booked an appointment for him with the psychiatrist.]

I quickly hopped into a cab and went to the best psychiatrist clinic in the city.

In the past, whenever Ethan had a depressive episode, Maeve would take him for treatment there.

The fee was ridiculously high. It cost eighty thousand dollars for a two-hour session. She paid every single time.

When I entered the clinic, Maeve was waiting at the entrance. When she saw me, she quickly ran over.

“Why are you here? Don’t make a fuss! He’s in a session now. We can’t interrupt.”

She lowered her voice and dragged me out.

I gritted my teeth and pushed her away.

“I borrowed that eighty thousand dollars from my friends. It’s for my mother’s surgery!

“Maeve, how could you take it all away?!” I shouted at her.

There were murmurs in the quiet hallway.

Maeve frowned as her expression fell.

“I told you that Ethan cut his wrist. If I didn’t reach on time, he could’ve died! His condition will only worsen if I don’t get him to a psychiatrist!”

“Then, why don’t you use your lottery money? Maeve, you won two and a half million dollars!”

I was furious. My voice shook.

“You have two and a half million dollars with you! You could use just a small portion of that money for him!

“Why did you touch the eighty thousand dollars that I tried so hard to get? It’s money to save my mother’s life!’

People stared at us. Maeve gulped.

She stubbornly said in a quivering voice, “I set aside the two and a half million dollars for his studies. I can’t use it!”

I was stunned, then I laughed.

She sighed.

“I told you that the reason why Ethan and I divorced was that we’re not compatible. It’s only when I married you that I found out he was severely depressed.

“The divorce made his depression worse. It went from functional to severe.

“I owe him at least this much!”

I bit my lower lip in frustration.

“Maeve, you can pay back whatever you owe him. But why do you want my mother to die?”

Maeve’s face immediately darkened.

“What do you mean? I treat your mother as my own. Why would I want her to die?

“I’ve asked my friend about your mother’s surgery. She’ll be fine if she undergoes that surgery next year.

“If Ethan’s fine, he’ll immediately go overseas to study. Then, I’ll be at ease. From then on, we can focus on earning and saving money for your mother’s surgery.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t believe you!

“Give me my money back now!”

As I said that, the clinic room door suddenly opened.

Through the gap, Ethan sobbed.

Maeve was immediately flustered and wanted to rush in.

I grabbed her hand.

“Give me back my money!”

She grimaced and pushed me aside.

“Go back for now! Once I calm Ethan down, I’ll call you.”

The door shut before me.

I could hear Maeve’s gentle voice as she comforted Ethan.

I was upset. Just as I was about to bang on the door, I thought of our house.

We bought that together when we got married. It was not big, but it should be able to sell for a few hundred thousand dollars.

I did not have time to think and quickly contacted my friend, David Harold. I told him that I wanted to sell the house.

However, on the way to the real estate office, David called me.

I forced out a smile and shook my head. “No, I just didn’t get a good sleep last night. “Mom, Maeve and I are fine. Don’t overthink this.” She relaxed a little after that. She ate her medicine and fell asleep. The surgery was a success. She recovered well in two weeks. Then, I took her home. I waited until she was a lot better before telling her everything. Initially, she was furious about everything. Then, she decided it was all in the past.“How did it end?”“The divorce is still in process, but she has admitted to all her wrongdoings, so it should go smoothly. “As for Ethan, he’s been sued for fraud. Even though Maeve was in the dark and is considered a victim, she still will be jailed for a year. They will try their best to pay us the money. “As for the house and luxury goods, it’s all sold.” My mother sighed. “As long as justice is served…” I nodded. I stood up and massaged her shoulders. When the sun filtered into the room, I thought of visiting Maeve fo

As she spoke, she grabbed my hand, but I flung it away.I turned to look at Ethan, who was hiding in the crowd. His face was covered in cold sweat. He had attempted to escape a few times, but the police officers were holding him down. “That’s impossible!”“What’s impossible?”“I can never trust you again, and he’s definitely not going overseas for his studies,” I said as I pointed at Ethan.“Ask him for the name of his school. What is he studying? How much is the school fee?“Maeve, how are you so stupid? What psychiatrist would ask for eighty thousand dollars for a two-hour session? Which dance teacher would charge five hundred thousand for dance classes? “What kind of education could possibly cost two and a half million dollars, which happens to be the exact amount you received from the lottery?” Maeve swallowed, then she looked over at Ethan. “Two and a half million dollars?!” Someone gasped in shock. “He’s not a millionaire! Why would he need so much money for just s

I took out the sales and purchase agreement from my bag and the receipts for the luxury goods. When I flashed them in front of her, Maeve’s face turned pale. “I indeed have very little contact with Ethan, but you contacted each other every single day!“Maeve, do you even have a heart? How dare you take the eighty thousand dollars that I borrowed to pay for his psychiatrist? “You even lied to me and said you had one and a half million dollars’ worth of debt. My mother paid that for you!“It’s the compensation she got when my father passed away from a car accident. It was all my mother had in her savings! “She gave all her money to you, and you used that money to buy luxury goods for your ex-husband!“Don’t you feel even a bit of shame?”Maeve’s eyes widened in shock. She subconsciously swallowed. “Where did you find these?”She reached out to take them from me. However, I dodged her attempt and put them back into the bag. The police officer, Ted Benson, asked her solemn

“Maeve?”“Ethan, we…” Maeve gritted her teeth. She looked torn, yet she had to tell him the truth. “We’re already divorced. I have a husband and a family now. It’s over between us. “When you’re overseas and find a woman that you like, you should pursue your own happiness…”Ethan also stood up. He grabbed her hand and became a little agitated. “But we’re meant for each other! If that weren’t so, you wouldn’t have abandoned Asher to take care of me all these years. What does it matter if you’re married? You can divorce him!“After all, it’s not the first time you’re getting a divorce. Once you divorce him, we can remarry!” Maeve pushed him away. However, when she saw that his emotions were not stable, she suppressed her feelings. After a while, the airport staff called for boarding. Maeve sighed and extracted her hand delicately. She helped him carry his suitcase. “You should go. Your future is waiting for you. “I have to go to the hospital later to take care of my m

It was a gloomy day. Maeve poured Ethan a glass of water. When she passed it to him, she whispered, “Be careful.” Ethan was watching some foreign news. He looked up at her and smiled. “Thank you. Sorry for troubling you again.”“You’re more than welcome.” She pointed at his bag. “Did you eat the medicine prescribed to you by the doctor yesterday?”A hint of panic flashed in Ethan’s eyes. Just as he was about to speak, Maeve took out the pill box from his bag and counted the pills. “The pills are untouched. Did you not take your medicine last night?”As she spoke, she took out other medicine too. All of them were untouched. He had not even opened the packaging. Maeve’s frown deepened. She popped a few pills out of their cover and passed them to Ethan. “How did you forget to take your medication again? How many times have I told you that you can’t stop your medication? Quick, eat them now.” Ethan looked away and gulped. Then, he said, “I’ll eat them on the plane. It’

“Asher, your house was already sold. Didn’t you know about that?”I gasped. “When did that happen?” “Last month. After deducting all the fines from late payment, it was sold for five hundred thousand dollars. “Maeve signed it. After she sold the house, she rented from the new owner for six months…”My grip loosened as my phone fell to the floor. My last hope was gone. Every step I took as I walked back to the hospital felt heavy. However, I could not stop. When the traffic light turned red, I snapped back to reality and opened Ethan’s social media.Last month, he posted a new breakdancing video every single day. I heard that he had hired one of the best breakdancing teachers and paid a hefty fee for private, one-on-one lessons, which only made the cost even higher.Maeve had liked every single video. She even commented with some supportive stickers. [Be confident and take it slow. I’ll always be here for you.]I was puzzled back then. He had not worked in years bec
