Chapter 1

The moment I stepped out of the operating room, a group of people rushed up to me like rabid dogs, cornering me at the locker room entrance. A sharp, ringing slap sent my glasses flying, and my vision blurred in an instant.

Clutching my stinging cheek, I barely had time to steady myself before someone grabbed me by the collar with a death grip.

"You heartless quack!" The leader of the agitators, Benjamin Wilson, glared at me as if he wanted to tear me apart.

His spit sprayed across my face as he shouted, "My son had a simple hernia surgery yesterday, and you cut his sperm duct? Are you trying to end our family line?"

Curious patients and their family members gathered around us, pointing and whispering about me. I mentally reviewed yesterday's surgery; there hadn't been a single mistake throughout the entire procedure.

Suppressing the anger in my chest, I explained solemnly, "It was a routine hernia repair, and it would never, under any circumstances, involve the sperm duct. The excised tissue was also sent to pathology. If you don't believe me, you can go verify the results yourself."

"Verify my ass!" Benjamin kicked over the trash can beside him.

Just then, the crowd parted. My wife, Emma Young, walked over with a stoic expression, flanked by a team of hospital security guards. She was holding a few thin sheets of paper, yet it felt as though she were holding my death warrant.

"That won't be necessary. This is the expedited report from an independent lab. Her voice was as cold as a stone in an ice cellar.

The very next moment, she flung the papers at my face. The sharp edges grazed the corner of my eye, sending a stinging pain through me.

"Sign it, admit to medical malpractice, and get the hell out of Heartwell Hospital!" Emma looked down at me. There wasn't a shred of affection in her eyes, only disgust. "Don't drag my family's reputation down with you!"

My junior colleague, Samuel Wright, who had always coveted the hospital director's position, stood beside her. Dressed in a brand-new suit, he sighed, as if he pitied me.

"Oh, Michael," he said. "I told you a long time ago. If your hands are shaking, don't force yourself onto the operating table. Now, look what you've done. You've ruined someone's life. That's a sin you can never make up for!"

I bent down to pick up the report from the floor. After just a glance, I was so exasperated I chuckled. The signature on it was crooked. It wasn't even my handwriting.

Samuel and Emma hadn't even bothered to forge it properly. This was a blatant attempt to destroy me.

"I didn't sign this." I held up the report and pointed at the signature.

My voice pierced through the commotion in the corridor. "The date is also wrong. At this exact moment, I was still on the operating table, saving a patient's life!"

A mocking smile tugged at the corner of Samuel's lips. He leisurely pulled out his phone, tapped on a video, and shoved it right in front of my face. "Stop denying it, Michael. The surveillance footage caught everything!"

On the screen, a man in a white coat and a surgical mask staggered drunkenly into the operating room. His build certainly looked like mine, but his gait was completely wrong.

"This is fake!" I hissed, staring straight into Samuel's eyes as rage exploded in my chest. "My white coat went missing yesterday. Did you steal it and wear it?

"Check the fingerprints! Check the retinal scans! Everyone has to use facial recognition to enter the operating room!"

Emma impatiently interrupted my defense. "That's enough! The evidence is right here. How much longer are you going to keep coming up with excuses?"

After scanning the surroundings, she announced loudly, "In light of this severe medical malpractice, the board has decided to remove him from his position as director. Dr. Wright will take over as the new director, effective immediately!"

At her command, several security guards rushed forward, reaching out to strip the white lab coat right off my back.

Dr. Cooper? The smile on Emma's face froze instantly. Stiffly, she turned to look at Nicole before shifting her gaze toward me. "M-Ms. Sutton, are you sure you haven't mistaken him for someone else? His name is Michael Cooper, but he's just an ordinary—""Shut up!" Nicole slapped Emma hard across the face. "Open your damn eyes and take a good look at that!" Nicole pointed at the massive LED screen behind her. It was currently displaying the summit's high-profile introductions. At the very top was a giant photograph of me. Beside it were the words: "The world's leading expert in minimally invasive surgery—the Phantom Surgeon: Dr. Michael Cooper.""He's the Phantom Surgeon you've been searching for!" Nicole exclaimed. "He's the same man you called a useless leech. Emma, just how blind are you to cast aside a man like him?"Emma felt as though she had been struck by lightning. Her entire body swayed, and she nearly collapsed to the ground. She gaped at that radiant name on the hu

I didn't think I'd run into Emma again at the Global Medical Summit. She was dressed in a custom evening gown with meticulously applied makeup, clutching an admission ticket that she had paid a fortune to acquire. Emma heard that this summit featured a mysterious guest of honor—someone with god-like expertise in the field of minimally invasive surgery. She had made up her mind. No matter the cost, she would recruit this surgical legend for Heartwell Hospital. So long as she could secure this deity, Heartwell Hospital would not only return from the dead but reach even greater heights. When that happened, she would crush me under her heel. Luxurious cars lined the hotel entrance. I'd just gotten out of a limousine, and I was immediately surrounded by a group of foreign experts. All of them eagerly called out my name, hoping to discuss academic matters with me for even a single minute. Right then, a shrill, terribly out-of-place voice pierced through the crowd. "Michael? How did y

After leaving Heartwell Hospital, I joined Unity Hospital and began preparing for the upcoming Global Medical Summit in the city. Meanwhile, just as I had expected, trouble soon erupted on Emma's side. Without my presence to keep them in check, all the troublemakers I had once suppressed crawled out of the woodwork. Samuel had been arrested, but the mess he left behind hadn't been cleared up. Surgical complications skyrocketed, and the misdiagnosis rate tripled. The VIP clients who had chosen Heartwell Hospital because of my reputation would rather pay the penalty fees rather than stay in the hospital.I hadn't expected Emma to be so stubborn, though. Even with the hospital's stock price cut in half and the board of directors cursing her out every single day, she still gritted her teeth and held on. "This is bad, Ms. Young!" The head nurse burst into the director's office with her hair in a mess, not even bothering to knock. "The patient in Bed 3—the one who had the heart bypass

Emma's pupils instantly dilated as she stared at me in disbelief. "T-That's impossible! How could he be the legendary Phantom Surgeon?"Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor. A group of people in business suits rushed over, led by none other than the Chairman and largest investor of Heartwell Hospital, Mr. Zimmerman. He was usually elusive, and even Emma could barely get an audience with him. However, at the moment, he was drenched in sweat, his face a mask of anxiety. As if she had found her savior, Emma immediately rushed up to him. Pointing at me, she spat out, "Perfect timing, Mr. Zimmerman. Even though this quack has cleared up the misunderstanding, he has severely damaged the hospital's image. I am currently firing him on behalf of the board!" The next second, a crisp, resounding slap landed squarely on Emma's face. It was even more brutal than the one I had received from Benjamin earlier, and it left Emma completely stunned.Mr. Zi

As soon as his words fell, the onlookers were dumbfounded. The same people who had been righteously condemning me earlier were now staring at Benjamin as if he were a monster. Benjamin's face turned as white as a sheet, cold sweat dripping from his chin. His lips trembled, but he couldn't squeeze out a single word for a long time. "And you!" Ryan turned, pointing his cane at Samuel's nose. "The person lying on that operating table isn't a hernia patient at all! He's an actor you hired, isn't he? And that excised tissue was a specimen you stole from the lab, wasn't it?"Samuel's knees buckled, and he collapsed to the floor. The pungent stench of urine soon filled the air.The truth was out. This had been a setup from the very beginning.Emma stood beside them, her face ashen and her body swaying as if she might collapse. She looked at Samuel, who was on the floor, with eyes full of terror and despair. It was over. Samuel was dragged away by the officers. When he passed me, his

Emma's expression hardened. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to have an ace up my sleeve.Samuel suddenly exclaimed in horror, "The operating room is a sterile, restricted area! How could you bring a camera inside? If it captured the patient's private areas, that would constitute a violation of privacy. It's illegal!" Like a drowning man clutching at a straw, he did everything in his power to muddy the waters. As soon as his words fell, Benjamin caught on and ran with it. "That's right, you pervert! I can't believe you secretly filmed my son's private parts! The footage absolutely cannot be made public! Who knows if you'll try to sell? Officers, arrest him! This is a crime!"The tide, which had been on the verge of turning in my favor, was instantly muddied once again. The officers looked troubled as well. One said, "Since the footage involves the patient's privacy, it can't be played in public without proper authorization. Please come with us to the station for questioning."T
