Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
My heart sank to the depths of despair.

Kidney donors weren't easy to find. In fact, many people waited until their dying breath without ever finding a match. Yet, Carla had believed Ivan's words without even bothering to verify them.

Besides, even if a donor had been found, things could still go wrong. Not to mention, the surgery itself carried risks.

I didn't want to be left at their mercy. Just as I was about to fight back, I realized in horror that I was starting to lose control of my body.

A tear slipped from the corner of my eye as my consciousness slowly began to fade.

So, the anesthesia hadn't worn off. It had just taken a little longer to kick in—just like my ridiculous life. I'd been deceived for so long that I'd only just begun to see the truth.

When I opened my eyes again, I was already lying in a hospital bed.

Carla stayed by my side, filling the entire room with flowers she'd bought for me. Just like before, she cared for me with the same tenderness.

The moment she saw that I was awake, she grabbed my hand in delight.

"Honey, you're finally awake! You nearly scared me to death!" She wiped away her tears as she comforted me. "Oh, I'm so furious. This stupid hospital ruined both your kidneys over a simple transplant surgery.

"But don't worry, I've already started looking for a kidney donor. Once you get the transplant, you'll be back to normal. Curse this hospital! I'll make sure they're held accountable! I won't let you suffer for nothing."

In the past, if I'd seen her staying by my side so devotedly, I would've been deeply moved. Then, I would've reassured her that everything was fine and that none of it was her fault.

But now, I kept quiet and bottled up all my pain.

The woman who kept claiming she'd protect me was the one who'd hurt me the most.

How laughable.

Seeing how strangely I was acting, Carla reached out to smooth the furrow between my brow.

"Honey, don't be sad. I have good news—I've decided I don't want to be childfree anymore. Once you're better, let's try for a baby."

She waited expectantly for my response.

But despite how desperately I'd wanted kids, I barely reacted this time. My face deathly pale, I even pushed her hand away.

I knew perfectly well that her so-called compensation was just a way to placate me for now so that she could carry out the remaining two acts of revenge without a hitch.

Since she loved Ivan so much, I'd simply bow out and let them be together.

Carla froze when I slapped her hand away. Then, she reached up to feel my forehead instead.

"Do you have a fever? Why have you been acting so strangely ever since you woke up?"

In the past, my eyes had always been filled with love whenever I looked at her. Now that my burning affection had been extinguished, how could she not notice?

However, I had no intention of answering her.

Betty awkwardly tried to smooth things over. "Anyone would have a hard time coming to terms with a medical mishap like this, so it's only natural for Mr. Draper to feel down. He'll come around in time."

Carla seemed to want to say something but ultimately held back. She recalled the single tear that I'd shed on the operating table, then looked at me now, showing no shock or grief over the "medical mishap".

An uneasy feeling crept over her, as if something had slipped beyond her control.

"Alright, Mr. Draper. It's time for your dialysis."

At Betty's urging, Carla pushed her doubts aside and accompanied me to dialysis.

Without functioning kidneys, my body could no longer filter waste products from my blood. My blood had to be drawn out, passed through a dialyzer to remove toxins and excess fluid, then returned to my body once it had been cleaned.

The process was excruciating, yet I remained so calm that I seemed unable to feel the pain at all.

Betty couldn't help praising me. "Mr. Draper, you really live up to your reputation as a boxing champion. I can't believe you can endure this much pain. It's such a shame, though—"

She glanced at Carla before looking back at me with pity, thinking how unfortunate it was that I'd have to undergo dialysis three times a week for five hours each session from now on.

On top of that, I'd have to deal with a whole host of complications, including low blood pressure, infections, anemia, and bone disease.

Russell shook his head. "Mr. Draper doesn't want to see you. I'd advise you to stop wasting time and sign the divorce papers as soon as possible. But it's fine if you refuse to sign it too. I have all the time in the world to drag this out with you."Carla dropped to her knees and begged desperately. "If you just let me see Trevor one more time, I'll agree to anything."Russell sighed. "Ms. Clayton, if only you'd thought of that before. You need to give up on this. Mr. Draper said he'd leave the house to you so that the two of you could settle your differences once and for all. He doesn't want to love you anymore, but he doesn't want to hate you either."After all, hating someone was exhausting too. I just wanted to let go of the past and move on with my life.Carla broke down completely at his reply. Even after learning how terribly she'd hurt me, I had still left the house to her. The fool I was, I still couldn't bring myself to hurt her after all that. How had she been so stupi

"Carla, you're just as stubbornly stupid! So what if Ivan got hurt or tried to kill himself? That's his own problem. What does it have to do with you? It's not like you pushed him!"So, why the hell are you blaming yourself, taking care of him, and even helping him take revenge on Trevor? You're beyond help!" Susie kept berating her, practically tearing her hair out in frustration at how blind Carla had been. With Susie jabbing at her forehead and giving her a piece of her mind, Carla finally began to take her words to heart. For the first time, she started to realize that something was wrong. It was true that Ivan's injuries were entirely his own fault, and no one else was to blame. And yet, Carla had foolishly helped him hurt me time and again.Susie sighed. "I honestly can't believe you. Trevor is such a wonderful husband, yet instead of appreciating him, you stupidly chose to love a piece of trash. Carla, the one thing Ivan did right was send you to Trevor."At least it gave y

"Carla, I asked you a question. Why aren't you answering me?" Ivan said unhappily.Carla took a deep breath. Somewhere along the way, she'd started feeling suffocated whenever she was around Ivan. After giving his question some serious thought, she finally said, "Ivan, let's break up."She was truly exhausted after all these years. She no longer wanted to let Ivan use her to hurt others or force her to do things she found despicable. The whole thing was almost laughable. They'd been together for so many years, yet no one had even known about their relationship. As far as the world was concerned, she was still my wife. Even saying the words "let's break up" to Ivan felt absurd, but she genuinely couldn't bear to go on like this anymore.Ivan's eyes widened in shock. "What did you just say?"Carla shrank back a little. "You said before that once I'd finished helping you get your revenge, I wouldn't owe you anything anymore. Now that it's over, let's go our separate ways."She spo

"Carla, Trevor is the one who ruined my life, so how can you believe his side of the story? Besides, my wheelchair was so far from the stairs. It's not like I could just get up, walk over there, and throw myself down the stairs, could I?" Ivan added.Hearing that, Carla let out a cold snort. Then, she pulled out her phone and played the video for him."Is that so? Then what's this? Aren't you clearly standing up on your own?"The moment Ivan saw the footage, his eyes widened in shock. He hadn't expected me to know that Carla wouldn't believe a word I said, so I didn't bother explaining myself. Instead, I prepared a video and let Carla see the truth for herself, leaving Ivan with no room to talk his way out of it.Ivan's eyes darted around as he desperately searched for an explanation. Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he snatched the phone and smashed it to the floor."This isn't real! Can't you tell that this video is obviously AI-generated?"Carla froze. She'd never considered

The footage was blurry, and there was no audio. But Carla had seen it with her own eyes how Ivan, who was supposedly paralyzed from the waist down, had actually stood up. He'd even walked over to the stairwell and thrown himself down the stairs. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "How could this be?"Upon hearing that, Betty leaned over to look at the screen and immediately cried out in shock. "Carla, weren't Ivan's legs supposed to be crippled? How was he able to stand up?"Carla was utterly bewildered.Just then, Ivan called her.In a pitiful voice, he said, "Carla, I feel awful. Can you come keep me company?""Fine," Carla replied, her tone turning noticeably colder. After hanging up, she called me first. She had no idea what I meant by leaving the divorce papers behind, but all she got was a busy signal. This left Carla feeling increasingly impatient, while the unease growing inside her became harder to ignore.Ever since I'd had both my kidneys removed, Carla had noticed tha

I remained expressionless.Ivan was taken aback. Once he recovered, he let out a cold snort."Looks like you already knew. Trevor, this is your comeuppance. If you'd let me win back then, none of this would've happened. Just look at how weak and pathetic you are now. Why, I almost feel sorry for you."I laughed. "Look who's talking. At least I can still get a kidney transplant, whereas you're stuck in a wheelchair and can't even stand up. You're the one who's truly screwed."Instead of getting angry, Ivan burst out laughing. Then, right in front of me, he stood up and even took several steady steps. With a triumphant laugh, he said, "Bet you didn't see that coming, huh? I've been faking it all along! Trevor, you've finally paid the price for your arrogance. All those five years I spent pretending weren't for nothing!"I stared at him in utter disbelief as a wave of profound sorrow washed over me.Because of his supposed paralysis, Carla had deceived me for five years, destroyed
