Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
Staying alive had become a struggle in itself, let alone continuing my boxing career.

Betty went over the precautions I needed to follow. "You'll have to blanch your fruit before eating it, limit your salt intake to two grams a day, and even watch how much water you drink."

Tears streaming down her face, Carla scribbled every instruction in a little notebook.

For a brief moment, I thought I saw regret in her eyes. But then again, I must have imagined it. After all, she should have been happy to see me reduced to this state and felt that she'd finally gotten her revenge.

But for the next two weeks after we returned home, she took care of me around the clock. In fact, she was even more attentive and patient than ever.

Since I had to eat small meals throughout the day, she put her work on hold to cook for me herself. In short, she took care of everything and wouldn't let anyone else help.

Just when I was starting to believe she'd truly changed, my condition took a turn for the worse.

On a bright, sunny day, I vomited until I passed out.

As I drifted in and out of consciousness, I could faintly hear my doctor, Evan Mackey, yelling beside me.

"Trevor's been getting dialysis on schedule, so how could his condition have progressed to kidney failure this quickly? As his wife, can't you show a little more concern for him? Don't let him eat whatever he wants just because you feel sorry for him! You're going to kill him if you do that!"

I let out a bitter laugh, and the image of the woman I'd spent my life chasing shattered completely in that moment.

I'd been a fool to think otherwise, because Carla hadn't been taking such good care of me out of guilt or to make amends. Rather, it had all been part of her plan to take her revenge even further.

She'd fooled me again.

But there wouldn't be a next time.

When I woke up again, Carla was nowhere to be seen.

After a moment of silence, I took out my phone and made a call.

"I remember you said you'd do me a favor. Does that offer still stand?"

Hearing this, the man on the other end immediately replied with excitement, "Mr. Draper, your father, Jonathan Draper, saved my life! You could ask me for one favor or 100. I'll do anything for you!"

Who could have imagined that the boy Dad had once rescued from drowning out of sheer kindness, Noel Denton, would grow up to become a wealthy tycoon who was practically chasing me down for a chance to repay the favor?

At first, I'd had no intention of using Dad's good deed to demand anything in return.

But now, all I wanted was to live. I wanted to keep living so I could stand in the ring again and reclaim the glory that had always been mine.

After hearing my request, Noel immediately got to work arranging my transfer to another hospital and finding me a kidney donor.

Only after ending the call did I finally breathe a genuine sigh of relief.

Suddenly, I heard a phone vibrating.

I thought I'd received a message from Noel. But on closer inspection, I realized the sound was coming from Carla's phone on the table.

A message from Ivan was displayed on the screen.

Curious, I tried entering Carla's birthday as the passcode. But it was incorrect.

With a bitter laugh, I tried my own birthday. That failed too.

I even tried the anniversaries of our confession and wedding, but none of them worked.

Finally, I entered Ivan's birthday.

The screen unlocked instantly.

"Once you've completed this final act of revenge, you'll be free to leave Trevor for good and come back to me."

"Come back"? I frowned at those two words.

Almost as if possessed, I began scrolling up through their chat history.

That was when I discovered that Ivan wasn't merely Carla's secret crush, as she'd claimed. In reality, they'd been childhood sweethearts and had been dating for years. However, they'd kept their relationship a secret and never made it public.

No wonder she'd turned down every confession and even seemed disgusted by my advances. Yet, after I'd pursued her relentlessly for three years, she suddenly stopped keeping me at arm's length one day and accepted my confession.

I'd always believed she'd finally been moved by my sincerity, but now I knew the truth. Hoping to beat me and take the championship for himself, Ivan had deliberately sent Carla my way to sabotage me.

But back then, despite being hopelessly in love with Ivan, Carla hadn't been willing to resort to such underhanded tactics. Instead, she'd simply showered me with affection, whispered sweet nothings in my ear, and begged me to throw the match.

Russell shook his head. "Mr. Draper doesn't want to see you. I'd advise you to stop wasting time and sign the divorce papers as soon as possible. But it's fine if you refuse to sign it too. I have all the time in the world to drag this out with you."Carla dropped to her knees and begged desperately. "If you just let me see Trevor one more time, I'll agree to anything."Russell sighed. "Ms. Clayton, if only you'd thought of that before. You need to give up on this. Mr. Draper said he'd leave the house to you so that the two of you could settle your differences once and for all. He doesn't want to love you anymore, but he doesn't want to hate you either."After all, hating someone was exhausting too. I just wanted to let go of the past and move on with my life.Carla broke down completely at his reply. Even after learning how terribly she'd hurt me, I had still left the house to her. The fool I was, I still couldn't bring myself to hurt her after all that. How had she been so stupi

"Carla, you're just as stubbornly stupid! So what if Ivan got hurt or tried to kill himself? That's his own problem. What does it have to do with you? It's not like you pushed him!"So, why the hell are you blaming yourself, taking care of him, and even helping him take revenge on Trevor? You're beyond help!" Susie kept berating her, practically tearing her hair out in frustration at how blind Carla had been. With Susie jabbing at her forehead and giving her a piece of her mind, Carla finally began to take her words to heart. For the first time, she started to realize that something was wrong. It was true that Ivan's injuries were entirely his own fault, and no one else was to blame. And yet, Carla had foolishly helped him hurt me time and again.Susie sighed. "I honestly can't believe you. Trevor is such a wonderful husband, yet instead of appreciating him, you stupidly chose to love a piece of trash. Carla, the one thing Ivan did right was send you to Trevor."At least it gave y

"Carla, I asked you a question. Why aren't you answering me?" Ivan said unhappily.Carla took a deep breath. Somewhere along the way, she'd started feeling suffocated whenever she was around Ivan. After giving his question some serious thought, she finally said, "Ivan, let's break up."She was truly exhausted after all these years. She no longer wanted to let Ivan use her to hurt others or force her to do things she found despicable. The whole thing was almost laughable. They'd been together for so many years, yet no one had even known about their relationship. As far as the world was concerned, she was still my wife. Even saying the words "let's break up" to Ivan felt absurd, but she genuinely couldn't bear to go on like this anymore.Ivan's eyes widened in shock. "What did you just say?"Carla shrank back a little. "You said before that once I'd finished helping you get your revenge, I wouldn't owe you anything anymore. Now that it's over, let's go our separate ways."She spo

"Carla, Trevor is the one who ruined my life, so how can you believe his side of the story? Besides, my wheelchair was so far from the stairs. It's not like I could just get up, walk over there, and throw myself down the stairs, could I?" Ivan added.Hearing that, Carla let out a cold snort. Then, she pulled out her phone and played the video for him."Is that so? Then what's this? Aren't you clearly standing up on your own?"The moment Ivan saw the footage, his eyes widened in shock. He hadn't expected me to know that Carla wouldn't believe a word I said, so I didn't bother explaining myself. Instead, I prepared a video and let Carla see the truth for herself, leaving Ivan with no room to talk his way out of it.Ivan's eyes darted around as he desperately searched for an explanation. Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he snatched the phone and smashed it to the floor."This isn't real! Can't you tell that this video is obviously AI-generated?"Carla froze. She'd never considered

The footage was blurry, and there was no audio. But Carla had seen it with her own eyes how Ivan, who was supposedly paralyzed from the waist down, had actually stood up. He'd even walked over to the stairwell and thrown himself down the stairs. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "How could this be?"Upon hearing that, Betty leaned over to look at the screen and immediately cried out in shock. "Carla, weren't Ivan's legs supposed to be crippled? How was he able to stand up?"Carla was utterly bewildered.Just then, Ivan called her.In a pitiful voice, he said, "Carla, I feel awful. Can you come keep me company?""Fine," Carla replied, her tone turning noticeably colder. After hanging up, she called me first. She had no idea what I meant by leaving the divorce papers behind, but all she got was a busy signal. This left Carla feeling increasingly impatient, while the unease growing inside her became harder to ignore.Ever since I'd had both my kidneys removed, Carla had noticed tha

I remained expressionless.Ivan was taken aback. Once he recovered, he let out a cold snort."Looks like you already knew. Trevor, this is your comeuppance. If you'd let me win back then, none of this would've happened. Just look at how weak and pathetic you are now. Why, I almost feel sorry for you."I laughed. "Look who's talking. At least I can still get a kidney transplant, whereas you're stuck in a wheelchair and can't even stand up. You're the one who's truly screwed."Instead of getting angry, Ivan burst out laughing. Then, right in front of me, he stood up and even took several steady steps. With a triumphant laugh, he said, "Bet you didn't see that coming, huh? I've been faking it all along! Trevor, you've finally paid the price for your arrogance. All those five years I spent pretending weren't for nothing!"I stared at him in utter disbelief as a wave of profound sorrow washed over me.Because of his supposed paralysis, Carla had deceived me for five years, destroyed
