Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
I remained expressionless.

Ivan was taken aback. Once he recovered, he let out a cold snort.

"Looks like you already knew. Trevor, this is your comeuppance. If you'd let me win back then, none of this would've happened. Just look at how weak and pathetic you are now. Why, I almost feel sorry for you."

I laughed. "Look who's talking. At least I can still get a kidney transplant, whereas you're stuck in a wheelchair and can't even stand up. You're the one who's truly screwed."

Instead of getting angry, Ivan burst out laughing. Then, right in front of me, he stood up and even took several steady steps.

With a triumphant laugh, he said, "Bet you didn't see that coming, huh? I've been faking it all along! Trevor, you've finally paid the price for your arrogance. All those five years I spent pretending weren't for nothing!"

I stared at him in utter disbelief as a wave of profound sorrow washed over me.

Because of his supposed paralysis, Carla had deceived me for five years, destroyed my body, and ruined my career.

And yet, his paralysis had been nothing but a lie.

For a brief moment, I actually felt a little sorry for Carla.

All because Ivan had faked his paralysis, Carla had felt so guilty that she sacrificed herself and turned to the dark side just to get revenge on me.

I wondered how she'd react if she ever discovered that the man she loved had been manipulating her all along.

Ivan seemed to guess what I was thinking and sneered. "Carla will never believe you. Don't believe me? Let's put it to the test."

As he spoke, he walked over to the stairwell. Then, he let out a scream and tumbled down the stairs.

Hearing the commotion, Carla rushed over. The moment she saw Ivan covered in injuries, she hurriedly called Betty over to help carry him up.

After comforting Ivan, she strode coldly toward me and slapped me across the face.

"After everything Ivan's been through, why can't you just leave him alone?" she snapped angrily.

"I didn't do anything," I replied calmly.

Carla glared at me in disgust. "You're still lying? If you didn't push him, are you telling me he got out of his wheelchair and deliberately threw himself down the stairs?"

Ivan chimed in, his voice full of wounded innocence. "Yes, I got up on my own and fell down the stairs. Trevor had nothing to do with it. Please don't blame him."

Carla looked at him with heartache and gently reassured him. "Ivan, don't be afraid. I'll make sure you get justice."

She raised her hand to hit me again.

I instinctively lifted my arm to shield myself, forgetting that it was covered in needle puncture marks from dialysis. Her forceful blow landed squarely on my arm, and blood immediately began to seep from the wounds.

I furrowed my brows and let out a muffled groan. The pain was so intense I broke out in a cold sweat.

Carla looked momentarily stunned. She was about to check my injury when Ivan suddenly clutched his head and cried out, "Carla, my head hurts so much! Am I going to die?"

Carla immediately panicked and pushed Ivan away in his wheelchair.

"Trevor, wait here. I'll take Ivan over first, then come back for you."

Betty tended to my wounds, and the people sent to pick me up arrived soon after.

I asked the hospital to retrieve the surveillance footage.

Ivan had no idea the cameras had already captured everything, and there was nowhere left for him to hide behind his lies.

I placed the divorce papers I'd prepared on my hospital bed, then sent Carla the video.

Once that was all done, I turned and walked away.

…

After making sure Ivan was okay, Carla rushed into the hospital room, only to find me gone.

"Where's Trevor?" she asked Betty.

Betty looked confused. "He was transferred to another hospital. Didn't you know that?"

"What do you mean, transferred?"

Carla was still trying to make sense of it when she suddenly spotted the divorce papers on the hospital bed.

She frantically reached for her phone to call me, only to find the video I'd sent her. With a trembling finger, she tapped on it.

Russell shook his head. "Mr. Draper doesn't want to see you. I'd advise you to stop wasting time and sign the divorce papers as soon as possible. But it's fine if you refuse to sign it too. I have all the time in the world to drag this out with you."Carla dropped to her knees and begged desperately. "If you just let me see Trevor one more time, I'll agree to anything."Russell sighed. "Ms. Clayton, if only you'd thought of that before. You need to give up on this. Mr. Draper said he'd leave the house to you so that the two of you could settle your differences once and for all. He doesn't want to love you anymore, but he doesn't want to hate you either."After all, hating someone was exhausting too. I just wanted to let go of the past and move on with my life.Carla broke down completely at his reply. Even after learning how terribly she'd hurt me, I had still left the house to her. The fool I was, I still couldn't bring myself to hurt her after all that. How had she been so stupi

"Carla, you're just as stubbornly stupid! So what if Ivan got hurt or tried to kill himself? That's his own problem. What does it have to do with you? It's not like you pushed him!"So, why the hell are you blaming yourself, taking care of him, and even helping him take revenge on Trevor? You're beyond help!" Susie kept berating her, practically tearing her hair out in frustration at how blind Carla had been. With Susie jabbing at her forehead and giving her a piece of her mind, Carla finally began to take her words to heart. For the first time, she started to realize that something was wrong. It was true that Ivan's injuries were entirely his own fault, and no one else was to blame. And yet, Carla had foolishly helped him hurt me time and again.Susie sighed. "I honestly can't believe you. Trevor is such a wonderful husband, yet instead of appreciating him, you stupidly chose to love a piece of trash. Carla, the one thing Ivan did right was send you to Trevor."At least it gave y

"Carla, I asked you a question. Why aren't you answering me?" Ivan said unhappily.Carla took a deep breath. Somewhere along the way, she'd started feeling suffocated whenever she was around Ivan. After giving his question some serious thought, she finally said, "Ivan, let's break up."She was truly exhausted after all these years. She no longer wanted to let Ivan use her to hurt others or force her to do things she found despicable. The whole thing was almost laughable. They'd been together for so many years, yet no one had even known about their relationship. As far as the world was concerned, she was still my wife. Even saying the words "let's break up" to Ivan felt absurd, but she genuinely couldn't bear to go on like this anymore.Ivan's eyes widened in shock. "What did you just say?"Carla shrank back a little. "You said before that once I'd finished helping you get your revenge, I wouldn't owe you anything anymore. Now that it's over, let's go our separate ways."She spo

"Carla, Trevor is the one who ruined my life, so how can you believe his side of the story? Besides, my wheelchair was so far from the stairs. It's not like I could just get up, walk over there, and throw myself down the stairs, could I?" Ivan added.Hearing that, Carla let out a cold snort. Then, she pulled out her phone and played the video for him."Is that so? Then what's this? Aren't you clearly standing up on your own?"The moment Ivan saw the footage, his eyes widened in shock. He hadn't expected me to know that Carla wouldn't believe a word I said, so I didn't bother explaining myself. Instead, I prepared a video and let Carla see the truth for herself, leaving Ivan with no room to talk his way out of it.Ivan's eyes darted around as he desperately searched for an explanation. Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he snatched the phone and smashed it to the floor."This isn't real! Can't you tell that this video is obviously AI-generated?"Carla froze. She'd never considered

The footage was blurry, and there was no audio. But Carla had seen it with her own eyes how Ivan, who was supposedly paralyzed from the waist down, had actually stood up. He'd even walked over to the stairwell and thrown himself down the stairs. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "How could this be?"Upon hearing that, Betty leaned over to look at the screen and immediately cried out in shock. "Carla, weren't Ivan's legs supposed to be crippled? How was he able to stand up?"Carla was utterly bewildered.Just then, Ivan called her.In a pitiful voice, he said, "Carla, I feel awful. Can you come keep me company?""Fine," Carla replied, her tone turning noticeably colder. After hanging up, she called me first. She had no idea what I meant by leaving the divorce papers behind, but all she got was a busy signal. This left Carla feeling increasingly impatient, while the unease growing inside her became harder to ignore.Ever since I'd had both my kidneys removed, Carla had noticed tha
