Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
It was already late when Alexis Goldstein got back to our rental. She was still wearing the delivery uniform she'd left in that morning, rainwater dripping from her hair onto the floor.

Before, I would have grabbed her a towel right away. But now I sat curled up on the couch, my legs numb.

"I did dozens of runs today. Next month's paycheck should look a little better," she said. "I brought you some of your favorites. I happened to pass a banquet on the way back, so I took some home.

"And there's a tin of cookies too. The company handed them out."

Alexis chattered on as she set her bags down on the table. She glanced at the cookie tin I'd left there and paused. "Your company handed out cookies too? What a coincidence. It's the same one."

The leftovers in her bag had already gone cold. She'd probably eaten at Jeff Hocken's place.

I clenched my fingers until the skin went white. So all this time, everything I ate and everything I used had been Jeff's leftovers.

I took a deep breath, struggling to keep my voice steady as I brought up my mother, Denise Hawkinson. "Mom's medical bills still haven't been paid this month. Don't you have some money left over? Could you..."

Before I could finish, Alexis started handling her things more roughly, cutting me off. "I haven't been paid yet. And once I am, I still have debts to pay off."

Her voice was cold and hard.

It had always been like this. She could be so, so good to me, but the moment money came up, she turned into a different person.

I'd always believed it was just because her debt was crushing her.

But that wasn't it.

The bathroom door shut.

Water dripped steadily in the living room. The wooden basin in the corner was already full of rainwater.

The home she shared with Jeff wouldn't leak. Its walls wouldn't grow mold.

No wonder she never liked coming home.

Since money had come up, Alexis seemed sulky. When we went to bed, she lay with her back to me. "When are we getting new sheets? These are way too itchy."

I paused and looked up. "A set of sheets costs over fifteen dollars. Didn't you say we needed to save?"

Alexis's back stiffened. She sulkily pulled the covers over her head.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I looked up the address of the mansion. That led me straight to Jeff's social media account.

He'd posted hundreds of vlogs, most of them documenting his everyday life with Alexis, from little things like the pets they kept to moments charged with intimacy. The comment sections were full of people envying their love.

In one clip, he'd filmed Alexis cooking in the kitchen. Head bowed, she carefully picked the bones out of a fish.

My eyes stung as I watched.

Alexis didn't know how to cook. Or maybe she'd simply never cooked for me.

Most of the time, I was so busy taking jobs that I forgot to eat. When I got home, an empty fridge was waiting for me. Alexis would always bring out a few packs of instant noodles. "Just pour some hot water on them and they're good to go."

She never prepared surprises for me on every holiday the way she did for Jeff in those videos either. All she ever said to me was, "We're under too much pressure. Anniversaries and birthdays are for rich people."

The happiest she'd ever made me was when she bought a matching pair of gold-plated silver rings. She said, "Someday, we'll definitely upgrade to better wedding rings."

She'd promised me so many somedays. Not a single one had ever come true.

Maybe the screen was too bright, because Alexis poked her head out. "What's wrong? What are you looking at?"

I covered the screen. "Nothing."

She went quiet beside me. I opened a ticket app and booked myself the cheapest standing-room train ticket I could find. It left in a week.

This was the end of the line for Alexis and me.

The next time I saw Alexis was three months later. She looked just the way she had back then. "Rudy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I've only just realized the person I love is you."I looked at the swell of her belly, and the corner of my mouth twitched. She seemed to notice the distance in my eyes, and a flicker of panic crossed her face. "No matter what, I'm the one who was wrong. I'll make it up to you. I shouldn't have trampled on your feelings."I'd never imagined a girl like Alexis would apologize to me.But my mother was gone. To me, her apology was worthless."You know what? When I found out we were never actually married, I was heartbroken and relieved at the same time."You rich people play games like this, trampling on other people's sincere feelings. I think it's pathetic. But at least we weren't married. That way, we didn't even have to waste time splitting up."I took a deep breath and looked at Alexis. "We were never from the same world in the first pl

Back then, the Playing Poor game was all the rage in her circle. At first, Alexis couldn't be bothered with it. But when her best friends egged her on, she set her sights on Rudy, who was waiting tables at a restaurant. She pretended to be broke, and her friends pretended to be collectors hounding her for money. Rudy stepped in front of her and paid 1,400 dollars of her "debt" himself.Little by little, they got to know each other. When he learned she still had several hundred thousand dollars in debt to repay, Rudy didn't hesitate for a second. He said he'd marry her right then and there. It would be a lie to say she wasn't moved. Her heart had fluttered right then, and she was ready to end the game there. But her best friends said, "A man's promise for a moment and his promise for a lifetime sound exactly the same. Wait three months after the wedding and see."I bet it won't even take three months. Two weeks, tops, and he'll show his true colors."And just like that, the two o

Alexis stood frozen, her lips trembling. She racked her brain, desperately searching her memory of last night.Craig had called to tell her Rudy wanted a divorce. And today happened to be their first "wedding anniversary."She'd planned to announce the end of the game once yesterday's party was over. Instead, Rudy's demand for a divorce had beaten her to it. And she'd been drunk, so she hadn't thought it through.Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the flowers she'd ordered in advance, meaning to reveal her true identity to Rudy on their first anniversary.Alexis rubbed her temples and dialed Rudy's number. She called again and again, but no one ever picked up.She was getting annoyed. Rudy never turned his phone off on her, and he never ignored her calls. Besides, he had designated-driver jobs to take so he could pay for his mother's treatment.Irritated, Alexis threw on a jacket and got ready to head to the office.Right then, a call came in."Rudy, you finally..."The rest

Alexis's party was cut short by a call from Craig Nichols. "Alexis, I'm sorry. That fake husband of yours came to me for a divorce, and I let it slip."Craig and Alexis were childhood friends of a sort. They just weren't in touch nearly as often as she and Jeff Hocken were. Still, he knew all about the game she was playing.Alexis had drunk too much and was a little fuzzy. She leaned against Jeff, listening as Craig explained what had happened. Her breath trembled. "He really came to you for help with a divorce?""Yeah. I didn't realize he was your fake husband until I saw the photos, so it just slipped out. And he knows the marriage certificate the two of you have is fake too. What do we do now?"Alexis's mind couldn't keep up, yet she stayed perfectly calm. "If he knows everything, then the game's over. I'll explain it to him when the time comes. He'll understand."With that, she hung up.Beside her, Jeff finally breathed a sigh of relief the moment he heard that Rudy Hawkinso

During the day, Mom's attending physician called me into his office and slid the bill across the desk. "Your payments are far too overdue. We'll have to free up your mother's room. Her bed's already been moved into the hallway."He sighed. "You saw what happened yesterday. Honestly, I'd recommend stopping treatment. She's suffering as it is."I understood every word he said.I sat on the floor of the hallway as people came and went. All that kept Mom hanging on now was an oxygen tank. After hesitating for a long time, I texted Alexis: [Mom might not make it. Come see her one last time. She misses you too.]Alexis read it but didn't reply, so I had no choice but to call. I called again and again until she finally picked up.It was noisy on her end. "What is it?""Did you see my message?"Alexis sounded irritated. "Yeah, I saw it. What do you want to tell me? You want money?"Rudy, you don't have to keep coming up with new ways to ask me for money. I'm drowning in debt. Didn't I

The next day, I went to the hospital after work to visit my mother, who was seriously ill. She'd been in the hospital for a long time, and I could never scrape together enough for her medical bills.I was sitting by her bed peeling an apple when the machines beside her suddenly started blaring an alarm.A doctor rushed in and examined her, then immediately wheeled her toward the operating room, calling back to me as he went, "Mr. Hawkinson, go pay the fees right now. You've seen your mother's condition for yourself."Watching my mother convulse, blood bubbling from her mouth, my ears rang and my mind went blank.I stumbled to the billing office and dug out my wallet and bank cards. Everything I had on me added up to less than 140 dollars.Just when I was at my wits' end, I ran into Alexis. She clearly hadn't expected to see me at the hospital. She froze for a moment, then quickly crumpled the paper in her hand into a ball and stuffed it into her handbag.Right then, I didn't car
