Chapter 1

In a daze, I pushed the door open further.

I had barely lifted my foot when the man spoke up. "There are slippers right there. We just had the housekeeper in to clean."

I pulled my foot back with an awkward smile.

The man didn't seem to mind. He waved a hand, telling me to feel free to look around.

The house was huge, easily more than twice the size of the rental Alexis Goldstein and I shared. It stayed warm in winter and cool in summer, and it didn't leak when it rained.

Signs of everyday life were everywhere: matching his-and-hers slippers in the shoe cabinet, picture frames crowding the TV stand, and an entire room packed with clothes.

It suddenly struck me that I'd been wearing the same shirt for three years. The cuffs had frayed, and I'd stitched and patched them again and again.

Whenever I wanted to buy new clothes, Alexis would always say, "Clothes cost dozens of dollars apiece. Let's save where we can. If it still fits, just keep wearing it."

But the clothes here still had their tags on. He could wear something different every day and not get through them all in a year.

"My fiancée's gorgeous, isn't she?"

The man's voice pulled me back. He lifted his chin proudly. "She said our wedding photo had to go in the most eye-catching spot in the house."

I forced the corners of my mouth up. "What's your fiancée's name?"

"Alexis Goldstein. She's the chairwoman of a company that just went public. It was all over the news a few days ago."

I took out my phone and searched her name. The moment Alexis's photo came up, my vision blurred with tears.

The Alexis I knew was buried under more than a hundred thousand dollars in debt. She worked herself ragged making food deliveries day and night. She suffered alongside me in our rental, where every meal had to be stretched to cover the next.

Now, I was finding out that the wife I'd been married to for a year was the chairwoman of a corporation, worth well over ten million dollars.

And she'd been living a double life all along.

I looked up at the picture frames on the TV stand. Every one of them had a date label stuck on it.

June 25.

"Where was this taken?" I pointed at the frame.

The man leaned in for a look and smiled. "Zamorano. I was in a funk around then, so she took me away to clear my head."

I remembered that date.

I'd worked myself so hard that my heart gave out, and a passerby had rushed me to the hospital. The doctor told me I needed bypass surgery, and it would cost a fortune.

I called Alexis, but couldn't get through. All she did was send me a text saying she was working on a very important order, and if she closed it, there'd be a good chunk of money in it.

I believed her. I turned down the surgery and settled for some cheap medication instead. I've been taking it ever since.

In the photo, Alexis pressed a soft kiss to the man's cheek, glowing with happiness.

I forced myself to look away and followed the man into another room.

It held a crib and was overflowing with toys.

"We haven't gotten our marriage license yet, but we've already decided to start trying for a baby. She picked out everything in here herself."

As the man looked around the room, his eyes brimmed with anticipation for the future.

I stood rooted to the spot, the blood in my veins running cold.

Alexis and I had had a baby once, too.

But by the time I found out, she'd already terminated the pregnancy. Crying, she told me she had no money to raise a child. She was still drowning in debt, we weren't in a position to have a baby, and she didn't want our child to suffer.

I had accepted it.

"You two must be really close."

Jeff Hocken smiled and rubbed the wedding ring on his finger. "We were childhood sweethearts. We grew up together. What about you? You and your wife must be close too, right?"

I glanced back at her in the wedding portrait and said nothing.

The rain had let up. It was time for me to go.

As I was leaving, Jeff pressed a tin of butter cookies into my hands. "Happy Thanksgiving. I bet you've never had cookies this good."

I managed a thin smile and thanked him.

On my way out, wearing my raincoat, I saw Alexis coming home. She didn't get a good look at my face. As she brushed past me, she trailed a perfume I'd never smelled on her before.

"Did we have company?"

"Just a driver. It was pouring, so I invited him in for a bit."

"You're too nice for your own good. Don't go bringing random people home."

Alexis's complaints gradually faded. I watched her toss the slippers I'd just worn into the trash can outside.

The door slammed shut behind her.

The next time I saw Alexis was three months later. She looked just the way she had back then. "Rudy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I've only just realized the person I love is you."I looked at the swell of her belly, and the corner of my mouth twitched. She seemed to notice the distance in my eyes, and a flicker of panic crossed her face. "No matter what, I'm the one who was wrong. I'll make it up to you. I shouldn't have trampled on your feelings."I'd never imagined a girl like Alexis would apologize to me.But my mother was gone. To me, her apology was worthless."You know what? When I found out we were never actually married, I was heartbroken and relieved at the same time."You rich people play games like this, trampling on other people's sincere feelings. I think it's pathetic. But at least we weren't married. That way, we didn't even have to waste time splitting up."I took a deep breath and looked at Alexis. "We were never from the same world in the first pl

Back then, the Playing Poor game was all the rage in her circle. At first, Alexis couldn't be bothered with it. But when her best friends egged her on, she set her sights on Rudy, who was waiting tables at a restaurant. She pretended to be broke, and her friends pretended to be collectors hounding her for money. Rudy stepped in front of her and paid 1,400 dollars of her "debt" himself.Little by little, they got to know each other. When he learned she still had several hundred thousand dollars in debt to repay, Rudy didn't hesitate for a second. He said he'd marry her right then and there. It would be a lie to say she wasn't moved. Her heart had fluttered right then, and she was ready to end the game there. But her best friends said, "A man's promise for a moment and his promise for a lifetime sound exactly the same. Wait three months after the wedding and see."I bet it won't even take three months. Two weeks, tops, and he'll show his true colors."And just like that, the two o

Alexis stood frozen, her lips trembling. She racked her brain, desperately searching her memory of last night.Craig had called to tell her Rudy wanted a divorce. And today happened to be their first "wedding anniversary."She'd planned to announce the end of the game once yesterday's party was over. Instead, Rudy's demand for a divorce had beaten her to it. And she'd been drunk, so she hadn't thought it through.Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the flowers she'd ordered in advance, meaning to reveal her true identity to Rudy on their first anniversary.Alexis rubbed her temples and dialed Rudy's number. She called again and again, but no one ever picked up.She was getting annoyed. Rudy never turned his phone off on her, and he never ignored her calls. Besides, he had designated-driver jobs to take so he could pay for his mother's treatment.Irritated, Alexis threw on a jacket and got ready to head to the office.Right then, a call came in."Rudy, you finally..."The rest

Alexis's party was cut short by a call from Craig Nichols. "Alexis, I'm sorry. That fake husband of yours came to me for a divorce, and I let it slip."Craig and Alexis were childhood friends of a sort. They just weren't in touch nearly as often as she and Jeff Hocken were. Still, he knew all about the game she was playing.Alexis had drunk too much and was a little fuzzy. She leaned against Jeff, listening as Craig explained what had happened. Her breath trembled. "He really came to you for help with a divorce?""Yeah. I didn't realize he was your fake husband until I saw the photos, so it just slipped out. And he knows the marriage certificate the two of you have is fake too. What do we do now?"Alexis's mind couldn't keep up, yet she stayed perfectly calm. "If he knows everything, then the game's over. I'll explain it to him when the time comes. He'll understand."With that, she hung up.Beside her, Jeff finally breathed a sigh of relief the moment he heard that Rudy Hawkinso

During the day, Mom's attending physician called me into his office and slid the bill across the desk. "Your payments are far too overdue. We'll have to free up your mother's room. Her bed's already been moved into the hallway."He sighed. "You saw what happened yesterday. Honestly, I'd recommend stopping treatment. She's suffering as it is."I understood every word he said.I sat on the floor of the hallway as people came and went. All that kept Mom hanging on now was an oxygen tank. After hesitating for a long time, I texted Alexis: [Mom might not make it. Come see her one last time. She misses you too.]Alexis read it but didn't reply, so I had no choice but to call. I called again and again until she finally picked up.It was noisy on her end. "What is it?""Did you see my message?"Alexis sounded irritated. "Yeah, I saw it. What do you want to tell me? You want money?"Rudy, you don't have to keep coming up with new ways to ask me for money. I'm drowning in debt. Didn't I

  • My Wife on His Wall    Chapter 3

The next day, I went to the hospital after work to visit my mother, who was seriously ill. She'd been in the hospital for a long time, and I could never scrape together enough for her medical bills.I was sitting by her bed peeling an apple when the machines beside her suddenly started blaring an alarm.A doctor rushed in and examined her, then immediately wheeled her toward the operating room, calling back to me as he went, "Mr. Hawkinson, go pay the fees right now. You've seen your mother's condition for yourself."Watching my mother convulse, blood bubbling from her mouth, my ears rang and my mind went blank.I stumbled to the billing office and dug out my wallet and bank cards. Everything I had on me added up to less than 140 dollars.Just when I was at my wits' end, I ran into Alexis. She clearly hadn't expected to see me at the hospital. She froze for a moment, then quickly crumpled the paper in her hand into a ball and stuffed it into her handbag.Right then, I didn't car
