I have just been discharged after leg surgery when Victor Clark, my wife's former colleague who resents her for taking his position, drags me up to the roof and stabs me repeatedly. My wife, Melissa Lane, is the captain of the rescue unit, yet she is busy mobilizing everyone to stop her depressed first love, Ethan Hayes, from setting his rental apartment on fire. I don't call her to save me. In my previous life, I begged her for help. She abandoned Ethan and rushed to rescue me. In the end, I survived while Ethan died in the blaze. Melissa never blamed me. She said that Ethan got what he deserved and even promised me a surprise for my birthday a week later. But on my birthday, she drugged me, tied me to a bed, and drove a knife into me again and again. "You and Victor set me up that day, didn't you? Those stab wounds aren't even serious! You were never going to die! Since you like getting stabbed so much, I'll make it real for you!" When I open my eyes, I am back to the day Victor took me hostage. This time, I let Melissa go save her first love.

Melissa shot me a cold look and said, "I believe Ethan. He would never lie to me. You're the one spreading rumors about him. He only told me after I pressed him."I stared at her. I was done pretending for even a second. "Melissa, let's just get divorced. People like you make me sick. I must have been blind."I should have said it days ago, but she had been in lockup and I couldn't reach her.Melissa was about to say something when her phone rang. She heard something on the other end of the line, and her expression suddenly changed."What? Someone filed a real-name complaint against me? Who is it?"Alright. I'm on my way."My lips curled into a smile. I knew that she was getting released that day, so I filed that complaint with her rescue unit this morning. As she turned to leave, I stopped her. "Melissa, I told you I'd make you pay."She frowned and walked off anyway. That afternoon, the building manager called. "Hi, a woman named Melissa Lane is claiming to be your wife. She

Ethan dropped to his knees with a thud, stared up at me in fear, and let his voice go ragged. He said, "Lucas, why are you still hounding me? I've been staying out of your way! When you told me to keep my distance, I broke the lease and moved out right away."You said you were jealous that Melissa was good to me, so I kept my distance from her. I even stepped aside and let you have her. Why are you slandering me online? Do you really want to push me to my death?"His dramatic scene drew a crowd in the hallway. People who didn't know the story started pointing at me."Poor guy. He's kneeling. What more do you want?""I know that look. That's severe depression. He's probably telling the truth.""No wonder he's in the hospital. He had it coming."Ethan lowered his head, the corner of his mouth twitching up, then lifted his face again, wearing the same pitiful mask.I got to my feet, walked over, and drove a fist into his jaw hard enough to knock him sideways."You wrecked my marri

Melissa completely ruined Victor's career. He held a grudge, but after we moved, he never found another chance to get to us.Just a few days ago, a man gave Victor a call, provided him with our address, and even covered his round-trip tickets.Losing his job alone wouldn't have driven Victor to murder, but the years that followed pushed him over the edge. With no steady income, money was always tight. Then, just a month ago, his five-year-old son was hit by a car. The hospital refused to operate because Victor couldn't pay, and the boy died.By the time that man approached him, grief and rage had already hollowed him out. With nothing left to lose, Victor chose revenge. The police officer held up Ethan's photo. "Was he the one who called you?"Victor frowned. "The eyes look similar. He wore a mask and a cap that day."Once I heard it, the pieces snapped into place. It was no wonder when Victor grabbed me, Ethan just happened to have a dramatic "episode", threatening to set his

Back then, after a few dinners together, we found we got along. On paper, our families were roughly equal, so we started talking about marriage. In our first year of marriage, Melissa kept me at arm's length, cold and distant. My buddies joked that Melissa might be into women, or that she already had someone else. That explained why she felt nothing for me.But I didn't think too much about it. She didn't go out drinking, didn't smoke, and never caused me a problem. I figured that a quiet life like that could work.Six months in, I realized that I had fallen for her. I started leaning in, trying to put some life back into a dead marriage.I knew her rescue team shifts wrecked her eating schedule, so I cooked up different soups every day to settle her stomach. She said she hated housework, so I took care of it all.She said she needed silence to sleep and requested separate bedrooms, so I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and gave her the space she wanted. She even took our
