Chapter 1

Blood soaked through my white T-shirt after the fifth stab, and the knife pressed to my neck shook in the wrinkled fist of my wife's former colleague, Victor Clark.

"Call Melissa," he growled.

I hesitated, my face paling, and dialed her number with shaking fingers. "Melissa, Victor has taken me hostage. He stabbed me five times. We're on the rooftop of our apartment building. Please, hurry and get me."

Silence hummed on the line for a beat. When Melissa finally spoke, her voice was colder than I'd imagined.

"What are the odds? You just happen to get stabbed the same day Ethan breaks down and tries to end his life.

"Victor has taken you hostage? I kept our new address under wraps. How would he even know it? Next time you put on a show, try a lie that isn't so paper-thin, will you?"

The coldness in her words made Victor's hatred spike. He applied more force on the knife, and the blade scored a thin, stinging line across my throat.

Terror rattled me from head to toe, but I forced myself to sound calm. "I never tried to stop you from helping Ethan. If you don't believe me, send your people up here to see for themselves—"

"That's enough!" Melissa cut in, sounding impatient. "Drop the act. I don't have time for your drama. I'm going to save Ethan."

I heard her turn away and order the dispatcher, "Flag any calls about a rooftop stabbing as a false report. Don't respond to it, no matter who calls!"

With that, the line went dead.

The loathing in Victor's eyes deepened until it felt like the air itself had thinned.

I hadn't expected Melissa to be this ruthless, and a suffocating hopelessness crashed over me.

Memories from my previous life surged up like a riptide. Victor had held me the same way and stabbed me five times.

I had called Melissa repeatedly until she relented and left Ethan Hayes to come to me. When Ethan found out about it, he snapped. He set his rental apartment on fire and died in the flames.

That night, when I sensed something was amiss and asked if she was angry, Melissa softened toward me for once.

"Honey, how could I be mad at you? Ethan deserved it. Don't overthink it. Your birthday is in a week. I've got a big surprise for you."

She fussed over me day and night after that. I let myself believe that she had finally seen my worth.

On my birthday, she slipped something into my drink and tied me to a hospital bed. With bloodshot eyes, she drove a knife into me again and again, screaming for me to go to hell and pay for Ethan's death.

"It was just a few cuts. You weren't going to die. Why did you have to force me to save you that day? If you hadn't lied about how bad it was, I never would've left. I actually believed you. I was an idiot.

"Ethan died alone. He was scared of being alone. Just imagine how desperate he must have been at that moment.

"Lucas, do you know what it's like to lose the love of your life? Do you?"

Her blade rose and fell until my blood streamed across the floor.

I tried to explain how dangerous it had truly been, but my words only fueled her fury. She didn't believe me.

After half an hour, not an inch of skin remained intact, bone showed white in places, and I was barely hanging on.

Melissa placed Ethan's framed photo in front of me, forced my battered body to kneel before it, then lit a fire that consumed our home and vowed to finish me the way it had finished him.

The memory of that despair nearly burned away what little reason I had left.

In the present, when I couldn't get Melissa to come to my aid, Victor's eyes went red, and he stabbed me again and again. Blood dripped off my shirt and pattered onto the black rooftop.

Just when I thought the lights were going out for good, footsteps pounded up the stairwell.

Robert Lane, my father-in-law, burst onto the roof. He took one look at me, drenched in blood, and his legs buckled as if they might give out.

Melissa shot me a cold look and said, "I believe Ethan. He would never lie to me. You're the one spreading rumors about him. He only told me after I pressed him."I stared at her. I was done pretending for even a second. "Melissa, let's just get divorced. People like you make me sick. I must have been blind."I should have said it days ago, but she had been in lockup and I couldn't reach her.Melissa was about to say something when her phone rang. She heard something on the other end of the line, and her expression suddenly changed."What? Someone filed a real-name complaint against me? Who is it?"Alright. I'm on my way."My lips curled into a smile. I knew that she was getting released that day, so I filed that complaint with her rescue unit this morning. As she turned to leave, I stopped her. "Melissa, I told you I'd make you pay."She frowned and walked off anyway. That afternoon, the building manager called. "Hi, a woman named Melissa Lane is claiming to be your wife. She

Ethan dropped to his knees with a thud, stared up at me in fear, and let his voice go ragged. He said, "Lucas, why are you still hounding me? I've been staying out of your way! When you told me to keep my distance, I broke the lease and moved out right away."You said you were jealous that Melissa was good to me, so I kept my distance from her. I even stepped aside and let you have her. Why are you slandering me online? Do you really want to push me to my death?"His dramatic scene drew a crowd in the hallway. People who didn't know the story started pointing at me."Poor guy. He's kneeling. What more do you want?""I know that look. That's severe depression. He's probably telling the truth.""No wonder he's in the hospital. He had it coming."Ethan lowered his head, the corner of his mouth twitching up, then lifted his face again, wearing the same pitiful mask.I got to my feet, walked over, and drove a fist into his jaw hard enough to knock him sideways."You wrecked my marri

Melissa completely ruined Victor's career. He held a grudge, but after we moved, he never found another chance to get to us.Just a few days ago, a man gave Victor a call, provided him with our address, and even covered his round-trip tickets.Losing his job alone wouldn't have driven Victor to murder, but the years that followed pushed him over the edge. With no steady income, money was always tight. Then, just a month ago, his five-year-old son was hit by a car. The hospital refused to operate because Victor couldn't pay, and the boy died.By the time that man approached him, grief and rage had already hollowed him out. With nothing left to lose, Victor chose revenge. The police officer held up Ethan's photo. "Was he the one who called you?"Victor frowned. "The eyes look similar. He wore a mask and a cap that day."Once I heard it, the pieces snapped into place. It was no wonder when Victor grabbed me, Ethan just happened to have a dramatic "episode", threatening to set his

Back then, after a few dinners together, we found we got along. On paper, our families were roughly equal, so we started talking about marriage. In our first year of marriage, Melissa kept me at arm's length, cold and distant. My buddies joked that Melissa might be into women, or that she already had someone else. That explained why she felt nothing for me.But I didn't think too much about it. She didn't go out drinking, didn't smoke, and never caused me a problem. I figured that a quiet life like that could work.Six months in, I realized that I had fallen for her. I started leaning in, trying to put some life back into a dead marriage.I knew her rescue team shifts wrecked her eating schedule, so I cooked up different soups every day to settle her stomach. She said she hated housework, so I took care of it all.She said she needed silence to sleep and requested separate bedrooms, so I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and gave her the space she wanted. She even took our

Melissa started to stammer, as if her brain refused to accept that I had been stabbed because of her.I opened my mouth to speak. But then, I blacked out from blood loss. When I woke up again, fresh bandages swathed my chest, and an IV drip was running.Melissa sauntered in. The shock on her face was gone. Not a trace of guilt remained. She gave me a bland look."I talked to my dad and learned the truth. This was my fault. I didn't think that Victor would actually find our address."From now on, I'll treat you better. Call it compensation. Just consider what happened today a good deed you've done. You're letting me go save Ethan, and I'll thank you on his behalf."She stood over me like a judge waiting for a plea.I frowned and stared at her. "That's all you've got after nearly killing me?"I couldn't believe how little I must have meant to her if she thought one throwaway promise to treat me better could make up for the stab wounds I received because of her.She even acted li

"I honestly couldn't stand Lucas anymore," Melissa said on the clip of the livestream."This time, he got jealous and hired extras for his drama. What will happen when he gets jealous again? He'll kill someone and burn the place down?"She paused, glanced at the crowd watching, and added, "He's so unstable. Once I divorce him, do yourselves a favor and steer clear of this man."Please hold me to it. Within three months, I'll file for divorce, then I'll marry Ethan. We'll share our sweet moments both online and in real life."People around her whooped and cheered."Do it! We've got your back!""Exactly. Marrying the wrong man ruins a woman's life!""We support you!"Under all those approving eyes, Ethan nodded, his smile wide. He slid on the diamond ring and lifted his chin with smug satisfaction. There was nothing suicidal about him now.I set down my phone and headed out to find the doctor to ask about my condition.I had just reached the doorway when I heard Robert on a ca
