Chapter 2

Author: Chihuahua
After Robert understood what was happening, he quickly said, "Victor, take it easy. We've wronged you. I'll call Melissa and have her come over. Just don't hurt Lucas. He just had surgery, and he's weak."

Victor's knife wavered. He seemed to believe Robert, at least for the moment.

Robert's hands shook as he pulled out his phone.

The line was noisy, and over the static, I caught a man's cracked, desperate voice.

Robert asked, "What is going on? Lucas has been stabbed a dozen times. He's fading. Why aren't you here yet?"

He had expected Melissa to listen to him. Instead, she laughed coldly.

"Dad, are you in on this, too? I already checked. Victor is still back in his hometown. Tell Lucas to drop the act. If he's really in trouble, he should call a doctor. By the way, I lined up a burial plot. We can schedule his interment whenever."

Her disgust bled through every word.

Then, a weary voice came through the phone. "Is Lucas just acting up again? Mel, don't get mad. He gets jealous and dramatic. Maybe you should sit with him... I really want to die. People online say burning is the worst way to go..."

I knew that the voice belonged to Ethan.

Robert's face darkened. "If you don't believe me, I'll send you photos."

Melissa went quiet for two seconds. She was probably looking at the pictures. But then, she sounded completely unbothered when she sighed.

"Wow, Dad. Lucas really splurged on this performance. Where did he find that extra who looks so much like Victor? And the blood looks exactly like the real thing.

"Oh, look at that pitiful face! Get him onto a film set before all that talent goes to waste!"

Robert opened and closed his mouth, rendered speechless.

For a heartbeat, a bleakness cut through me. How had I never seen Melissa for who she was?

Neighbors gathered on the rooftop. Some of them tried to explain the situation on my behalf.

However, Melissa still refused to believe it. "What now? Did he hire extras? Or are all those people really falling for his acting? Have fun up there. I'm going to calm Ethan down."

The roof went quiet for a few seconds after the call ended. I had no idea which of her lines set Victor off, but he suddenly shoved me to the ground and lost it. The knife rose and fell, again and again.

The blade cut through my skin, and a sharp, horrifying pain surged from my chest through my body. I tried to fight back, but I couldn't even lift an arm.

Just as the edges of my vision went dark, two officers barreled through the door.

It turned out that a neighbor had called 911.

It took both officers a hard minute to wrench the knife from Victor's grip and slap cuffs on him.

Meanwhile, my blood kept spilling, and my eyelids grew as heavy as iron.

Right before they dropped, I heard Melissa's soft voice coming from Robert's phone. She had forgotten to hang up.

"Ethan, I've wanted to divorce Lucas for a long time, but he takes such good care of my dad. In my eyes, you're my only husband. He's just a useful moneymaker.

"Don't be upset. Think about it. How could I love a man who lies through his teeth? I only love you because you're honest and dependable."

Each word she uttered slid into my chest like a fresh blade. However, what filled me wasn't sorrow, but hate.

...

When I opened my eyes, the smell of antiseptic hit me.

Robert hurried to the bed and let out a long breath. "Lucas, we failed you. I'm sorry you had to go through this."

I glanced at the thick bandages across my chest, my gaze turning cold. "I want some time alone."

He took in my cold demeanor, sighed again, and stepped out.

I pulled out my phone to distract myself and accidentally played a video clip from a livestream of Melissa talking Ethan down.

Gasoline had been splashed across the living room floor, and Melissa didn't even flinch. She stood there in a white wedding dress, held a diamond ring, and looked up at Ethan, her gaze filled with deep affection.

Melissa shot me a cold look and said, "I believe Ethan. He would never lie to me. You're the one spreading rumors about him. He only told me after I pressed him."I stared at her. I was done pretending for even a second. "Melissa, let's just get divorced. People like you make me sick. I must have been blind."I should have said it days ago, but she had been in lockup and I couldn't reach her.Melissa was about to say something when her phone rang. She heard something on the other end of the line, and her expression suddenly changed."What? Someone filed a real-name complaint against me? Who is it?"Alright. I'm on my way."My lips curled into a smile. I knew that she was getting released that day, so I filed that complaint with her rescue unit this morning. As she turned to leave, I stopped her. "Melissa, I told you I'd make you pay."She frowned and walked off anyway. That afternoon, the building manager called. "Hi, a woman named Melissa Lane is claiming to be your wife. She

Ethan dropped to his knees with a thud, stared up at me in fear, and let his voice go ragged. He said, "Lucas, why are you still hounding me? I've been staying out of your way! When you told me to keep my distance, I broke the lease and moved out right away."You said you were jealous that Melissa was good to me, so I kept my distance from her. I even stepped aside and let you have her. Why are you slandering me online? Do you really want to push me to my death?"His dramatic scene drew a crowd in the hallway. People who didn't know the story started pointing at me."Poor guy. He's kneeling. What more do you want?""I know that look. That's severe depression. He's probably telling the truth.""No wonder he's in the hospital. He had it coming."Ethan lowered his head, the corner of his mouth twitching up, then lifted his face again, wearing the same pitiful mask.I got to my feet, walked over, and drove a fist into his jaw hard enough to knock him sideways."You wrecked my marri

Melissa completely ruined Victor's career. He held a grudge, but after we moved, he never found another chance to get to us.Just a few days ago, a man gave Victor a call, provided him with our address, and even covered his round-trip tickets.Losing his job alone wouldn't have driven Victor to murder, but the years that followed pushed him over the edge. With no steady income, money was always tight. Then, just a month ago, his five-year-old son was hit by a car. The hospital refused to operate because Victor couldn't pay, and the boy died.By the time that man approached him, grief and rage had already hollowed him out. With nothing left to lose, Victor chose revenge. The police officer held up Ethan's photo. "Was he the one who called you?"Victor frowned. "The eyes look similar. He wore a mask and a cap that day."Once I heard it, the pieces snapped into place. It was no wonder when Victor grabbed me, Ethan just happened to have a dramatic "episode", threatening to set his

Back then, after a few dinners together, we found we got along. On paper, our families were roughly equal, so we started talking about marriage. In our first year of marriage, Melissa kept me at arm's length, cold and distant. My buddies joked that Melissa might be into women, or that she already had someone else. That explained why she felt nothing for me.But I didn't think too much about it. She didn't go out drinking, didn't smoke, and never caused me a problem. I figured that a quiet life like that could work.Six months in, I realized that I had fallen for her. I started leaning in, trying to put some life back into a dead marriage.I knew her rescue team shifts wrecked her eating schedule, so I cooked up different soups every day to settle her stomach. She said she hated housework, so I took care of it all.She said she needed silence to sleep and requested separate bedrooms, so I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and gave her the space she wanted. She even took our

Melissa started to stammer, as if her brain refused to accept that I had been stabbed because of her.I opened my mouth to speak. But then, I blacked out from blood loss. When I woke up again, fresh bandages swathed my chest, and an IV drip was running.Melissa sauntered in. The shock on her face was gone. Not a trace of guilt remained. She gave me a bland look."I talked to my dad and learned the truth. This was my fault. I didn't think that Victor would actually find our address."From now on, I'll treat you better. Call it compensation. Just consider what happened today a good deed you've done. You're letting me go save Ethan, and I'll thank you on his behalf."She stood over me like a judge waiting for a plea.I frowned and stared at her. "That's all you've got after nearly killing me?"I couldn't believe how little I must have meant to her if she thought one throwaway promise to treat me better could make up for the stab wounds I received because of her.She even acted li

"I honestly couldn't stand Lucas anymore," Melissa said on the clip of the livestream."This time, he got jealous and hired extras for his drama. What will happen when he gets jealous again? He'll kill someone and burn the place down?"She paused, glanced at the crowd watching, and added, "He's so unstable. Once I divorce him, do yourselves a favor and steer clear of this man."Please hold me to it. Within three months, I'll file for divorce, then I'll marry Ethan. We'll share our sweet moments both online and in real life."People around her whooped and cheered."Do it! We've got your back!""Exactly. Marrying the wrong man ruins a woman's life!""We support you!"Under all those approving eyes, Ethan nodded, his smile wide. He slid on the diamond ring and lifted his chin with smug satisfaction. There was nothing suicidal about him now.I set down my phone and headed out to find the doctor to ask about my condition.I had just reached the doorway when I heard Robert on a ca
