Chapter 1

"Is something wrong, doctor?" the patient's husband, Daniel Poole, asked.

"It's nothing." Isaac Howard shook his head.

It had to be just someone with the same name. His wife, Julia Gordon, loved him far too much to ever betray him.

In their five years of marriage, her world had revolved entirely around him.

Every time she closed a big business deal, her first priority was buying him a gift. Cars, houses, sports cars, yachts—they had accumulated enough to fill a warehouse. She had even put every piece of real estate under his name.

During a road trip a few years back, they were caught in a rockslide, and Isaac had thrown himself over Julia without a second thought.

He ended up in the ICU with severe injuries. Though he survived, the accident left him likely infertile for the rest of his life.

For a man, losing the ability to father children was a devastating blow.

At his lowest point, Julia's mother, Irene Wiley, tried to force a divorce. Julia had said, "Mom, Isaac is the only husband I will ever have. If you make me leave him, I'd rather die."

After that, Irene never brought up divorce again.

Desperate to have a family, Isaac had consulted countless specialists over the years, but every attempt ended in disappointment.

Fearing for his self-esteem, Julia eventually told him she didn't even want children anymore.

How could a woman who loved him like that ever cheat?

"She's in her third trimester. You need to be careful. Try to tone down the intimacy a bit," Isaac advised.

Young people certainly had plenty of energy. Though the patient hadn't come in yet, the man before him was covered in marks. Clearly, they weren't holding back.

Isaac couldn't help but think of Julia. She had been away on business for nearly a year now.

She promised she would be back in three months, and he missed her terribly.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "My wife's a few years older than me and has a pretty high drive. She says she can't resist me whenever she sees me.

"We've been at it every day lately. We even had another round this afternoon… But honestly, I've been way gentler compared to before she got pregnant. Back then, things were even wilder!"

"Is that so?" Isaac offered a polite smile. "You two must be really close."

"Dr. Howard, you'll be just as jumpy when your wife gets pregnant!"

Isaac froze for a second. Pregnant? Would he ever get the chance to give Julia a child?

Suddenly, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced down at the screen to find a text from Julia. "Honey, my meeting ran super late today, so I won't be able to video call tonight! I'll talk to you later. Love you!"

Even while traveling for work, she made a point to video call him every single day. It was a routine he had come to rely on.

Suppressing a wave of disappointment, Isaac locked his phone and put it away.

"Doctor, my wife's here!"

Daniel rushed to the doorway and gently guided a woman inside. "Honey, how are you feeling? Still uncomfortable?"

The door swung open, and a familiar silhouette stepped into the light.

"What do you think? I told you to go easy on me, but you wouldn't listen!"

She instinctively leaned into his chest as soon as she walked in.

Isaac glanced up at the woman, and she looked in his direction at the same time.

Isaac replied calmly, "Don't make me hate you. If it weren't for you, none of this would've happened. Daniel wouldn't be sitting in a foreign prison right now. This is all your fault. It's time to put an end to this once and for all, don't you think?""I'm sorry." Julia truly meant it. "I never imagined Daniel would lose his mind like this. I was wrong, Isaac.""Then, just leave. Don't come looking for me again. I'm completely exhausted, and I really don't want to see you anymore."Julia said, "I've already canceled your contract. Avernia isn't for you. You should head back home. The position of Head of OB-GYN at Jerandale Hospital is still yours.""I don't want to go back." Isaac turned her down. "I've decided to stay here. The work I'm doing here actually matters.""Alright." Julia nodded softly. "I get it."She finally realized that she had lost Isaac for good and that there was no longer any place for her in his heart. It was time for her to go."I'm leaving first thing tom

A dull thud echoed through the alley as Helen collapsed instantly to the ground."How dare you ruin my plan?"Daniel scrambled up from the dirt, kicked her aside, and stomped toward Isaac. "Isaac, you're dead today. Nobody is coming to save you now!"Isaac slowly drifted back into consciousness. Seeing Daniel approaching with a rock in hand, he frowned and dragged himself up from the pavement with immense effort. "Daniel… Turn back before it's too late. Stop adding to your crimes.""Bullshit! There's no turning back for me!"Daniel raised the rock high above his head, aiming straight for Isaac.Suddenly, Helen reached out her hands and clamped tightly onto Daniel's ankle. "Dr. Howard, run!""Let go of me, you bitch!"Enraged, Daniel struck Helen several more times.Yet even as blood poured over her face, her arms remained locked around his leg like a vise.Seeing this, Isaac lunged at Daniel, and the two broke into a fierce fight."Isaac! Go to hell!" Daniel shouted."Stop

Isaac yelled, "Get off me! Don't touch me! Daniel! You can't do this! Tell them to stop!"He resisted with every ounce of strength he had left, finally inciting the temper of one of the men.The thug raised a heavy fist and slammed it into Isaac's head repeatedly until he knocked him completely unconscious.Gazing down at the passed-out man, Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed Julia's number. When Julia saw the caller ID, her first instinct was to decline the call.Yet remembering Leslie's warning, she forced herself to swipe answer. She was terrified that if Daniel had truly tracked them down to Avernia, he might try to harm Isaac."Daniel, why are you calling me?" she asked."Nothing special. Just wanted to catch up with you.""Cut the nonsense! I know you're in Avernia. What the hell do you want?""You're quite smart." Daniel chuckled darkly."I heard today is Isaac's day off, and I happened to spot him strolling through the open-air market. Coincidentally, a few of my

Morning sunlight spilled over the bustling open-air market.Isaac turned to look at the woman beside him. Her cheek was swollen and red. Julia's slap had landed with considerable force."I'm so sorry for dragging you into this," he said."You're far too polite, Dr. Howard." Helen smiled, unbothered."If it helped you out, then it was worth it. Though I can tell Ms. Gordon genuinely cares about you. Have you really never considered giving her another chance?""Cares about me?"Isaac let out a cold laugh. "If she cared about me, she wouldn't have exiled me to a place like this, let alone cheated on me during our marriage and had a child with someone else."Helen said nothing more. Her gaze fell on a silk scarf displayed at a market stall. She picked it up and draped it effortlessly around her neck. "How do I look?"Her smile was bright and radiant. Her elegant and refined face drew glances from passersby.Even Isaac found himself subtly captivated by her warmth. He nodded and a

Ever since Julia arrived in Avernia, she had been popping up out of nowhere to harass Isaac. She bought him flowers, gave him gifts, and constantly asked him out to dinner or to go shopping. No matter how many times Isaac turned her down, she refused to give up, clinging to him like a stubborn shadow he couldn't shake.Knowing her all too well, Isaac eventually stopped paying her any mind.He was bound to stay here for five years, and based on what he knew of Julia, there was no way she would last five whole years in a place like this.Sure enough, her company in Corvella soon called. "Ms. Gordon, an issue has come up at the company. We need you back to handle it.""We have a deputy CEO. Have him take care of it for now. Everything else can wait until I get back."Just as she was about to hang up, Leslie quickly added, "There's one more thing. Mr. Poole went to your house looking for you recently. After learning you had gone to Avernia, he completely vanished from Jerandale. I su

"What about you?" Isaac asked. "Why did you come here?"Helen looked soft-spoken and delicate, hardly the type one would expect to volunteer for medical aid in Avernia."To save lives and relieve suffering." Her response was somewhat cliché.Sensing that she had her own story, Isaac didn't press any further. The two ended up talking late into the night. …The next morning, as soon as Isaac arrived at the hospital, he saw Julia. She had clearly been waiting for him for a while. The moment she spotted him, a charming smile curved onto her red lips. "Good morning, Isaac. Have you had breakfast yet?""Yeah." Isaac walked right past her and headed straight toward the obstetrics department.Julia clutched her wounded abdomen and hurried to match his pace. "How about we grab lunch together?"Isaac ignored her, but she kept pestering him like a lingering shadow. Finally losing his patience, he stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Enough, Julia! Haven't I made myself clear
