Chapter 2

Author: Ann Chase
The moment their eyes met, time seemed to freeze.

"Honey?" Isaac stood frozen, his eyes turning bloodshot.

The woman standing right in front of him was indeed Julia, who was supposed to be abroad on a year-long business trip!

She was cheating on him! And she was carrying another man's baby!

She was already nine months along, which meant they had been sleeping together for a long time.

His heart shattered into a million pieces. Swaying on his feet, Isaac grabbed the edge of the desk just to stay upright.

"Who are you calling 'honey'?"

Daniel flared up instantly. "Dr. Howard, aren't you a little too old to be playing the homewrecker? I get that my wife is drop-dead gorgeous, but calling her 'honey' right in front of me? That's way too bold!"

Whenever they went out, men were always hitting on Julia.

Assuming Isaac was just another creep, Daniel swung his fist and punched him right in the face. "Shame on you! How can a scumbag like you even be a doctor? I'll report you for hitting on your patient!"

Isaac wasn't one to just take a hit. He struck right back. "Get your facts straight! Did I hit on your wife, or did you steal mine?"

The moment his fist landed on Daniel's face, Daniel completely lost it. "Did you just hit me?"

Daniel charged forward and grabbed Isaac by the collar, yelling, "I'll kill you!"

Another punch came flying down.

Isaac tried to fight back, but before his hand could touch Daniel, Julia yanked his arm back.

"Isaac, Daniel is young and hot-headed! It was only one punch. Don't hold it against him."

The blow on his face burned with sharp pain. Yet it was nothing compared to the agony in his chest.

Back when they first got together, Isaac had been picked on too.

He was just an OB-GYN resident at the hospital, while Julia was the heiress of the powerful Gordon family of Jerandale.

Julia was spoiled and used to getting her way. She'd had so many boyfriends they could line up from one end of the street to the other.

But during a massive pileup, she fell for Isaac.

She dropped every man around her and pursued him relentlessly. It took three whole years to finally win his heart.

After they started dating, Julia's jealous exes began harassing Isaac. The worst time, one of them hired a gang of thugs to take him out.

Julia had lost her mind. She showed up with a fleet of bodyguards, beating the thugs until they were practically crippled, and nearly choked the ex to death herself.

"I'm warning you. If you ever lay a finger on Isaac again, I'll snap your neck with my bare hands! I mean every word!"

After that, no one ever dared to cross him again.

Yet here she was today, shielding another man.

After a long silence, Isaac slowly lowered his hand. "Fine. I won't hold it against him. Julia, let's get a divorce."

Daniel blinked, caught off guard. "Divorce? What divorce? What the hell is going on between you two?"

Suddenly, Julia clutched her belly and cried out in agony, "Daniel, my stomach hurts so bad! Is something wrong with our baby?"

Before anyone could answer, a streak of bright red blood trickled down her legs.

Isaac's medical training compelled him to step forward and examine her, but Daniel shoved him away. "Get away from her! Don't you dare touch my wife! If you hadn't started a fight with me, she wouldn't be bleeding!"

"Daniel, I'm so scared! Get someone to save our baby!" Julia clung to Daniel's hand like he was her only lifeline.

Daniel scooped her up into his arms and rushed out of the office. "Don't worry, Julia! If anything happens to our baby, I'm suing Isaac! I'll make sure he never practices medicine again!"

Isaac replied calmly, "Don't make me hate you. If it weren't for you, none of this would've happened. Daniel wouldn't be sitting in a foreign prison right now. This is all your fault. It's time to put an end to this once and for all, don't you think?""I'm sorry." Julia truly meant it. "I never imagined Daniel would lose his mind like this. I was wrong, Isaac.""Then, just leave. Don't come looking for me again. I'm completely exhausted, and I really don't want to see you anymore."Julia said, "I've already canceled your contract. Avernia isn't for you. You should head back home. The position of Head of OB-GYN at Jerandale Hospital is still yours.""I don't want to go back." Isaac turned her down. "I've decided to stay here. The work I'm doing here actually matters.""Alright." Julia nodded softly. "I get it."She finally realized that she had lost Isaac for good and that there was no longer any place for her in his heart. It was time for her to go."I'm leaving first thing tom

A dull thud echoed through the alley as Helen collapsed instantly to the ground."How dare you ruin my plan?"Daniel scrambled up from the dirt, kicked her aside, and stomped toward Isaac. "Isaac, you're dead today. Nobody is coming to save you now!"Isaac slowly drifted back into consciousness. Seeing Daniel approaching with a rock in hand, he frowned and dragged himself up from the pavement with immense effort. "Daniel… Turn back before it's too late. Stop adding to your crimes.""Bullshit! There's no turning back for me!"Daniel raised the rock high above his head, aiming straight for Isaac.Suddenly, Helen reached out her hands and clamped tightly onto Daniel's ankle. "Dr. Howard, run!""Let go of me, you bitch!"Enraged, Daniel struck Helen several more times.Yet even as blood poured over her face, her arms remained locked around his leg like a vise.Seeing this, Isaac lunged at Daniel, and the two broke into a fierce fight."Isaac! Go to hell!" Daniel shouted."Stop

Isaac yelled, "Get off me! Don't touch me! Daniel! You can't do this! Tell them to stop!"He resisted with every ounce of strength he had left, finally inciting the temper of one of the men.The thug raised a heavy fist and slammed it into Isaac's head repeatedly until he knocked him completely unconscious.Gazing down at the passed-out man, Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed Julia's number. When Julia saw the caller ID, her first instinct was to decline the call.Yet remembering Leslie's warning, she forced herself to swipe answer. She was terrified that if Daniel had truly tracked them down to Avernia, he might try to harm Isaac."Daniel, why are you calling me?" she asked."Nothing special. Just wanted to catch up with you.""Cut the nonsense! I know you're in Avernia. What the hell do you want?""You're quite smart." Daniel chuckled darkly."I heard today is Isaac's day off, and I happened to spot him strolling through the open-air market. Coincidentally, a few of my

Morning sunlight spilled over the bustling open-air market.Isaac turned to look at the woman beside him. Her cheek was swollen and red. Julia's slap had landed with considerable force."I'm so sorry for dragging you into this," he said."You're far too polite, Dr. Howard." Helen smiled, unbothered."If it helped you out, then it was worth it. Though I can tell Ms. Gordon genuinely cares about you. Have you really never considered giving her another chance?""Cares about me?"Isaac let out a cold laugh. "If she cared about me, she wouldn't have exiled me to a place like this, let alone cheated on me during our marriage and had a child with someone else."Helen said nothing more. Her gaze fell on a silk scarf displayed at a market stall. She picked it up and draped it effortlessly around her neck. "How do I look?"Her smile was bright and radiant. Her elegant and refined face drew glances from passersby.Even Isaac found himself subtly captivated by her warmth. He nodded and a

Ever since Julia arrived in Avernia, she had been popping up out of nowhere to harass Isaac. She bought him flowers, gave him gifts, and constantly asked him out to dinner or to go shopping. No matter how many times Isaac turned her down, she refused to give up, clinging to him like a stubborn shadow he couldn't shake.Knowing her all too well, Isaac eventually stopped paying her any mind.He was bound to stay here for five years, and based on what he knew of Julia, there was no way she would last five whole years in a place like this.Sure enough, her company in Corvella soon called. "Ms. Gordon, an issue has come up at the company. We need you back to handle it.""We have a deputy CEO. Have him take care of it for now. Everything else can wait until I get back."Just as she was about to hang up, Leslie quickly added, "There's one more thing. Mr. Poole went to your house looking for you recently. After learning you had gone to Avernia, he completely vanished from Jerandale. I su

"What about you?" Isaac asked. "Why did you come here?"Helen looked soft-spoken and delicate, hardly the type one would expect to volunteer for medical aid in Avernia."To save lives and relieve suffering." Her response was somewhat cliché.Sensing that she had her own story, Isaac didn't press any further. The two ended up talking late into the night. …The next morning, as soon as Isaac arrived at the hospital, he saw Julia. She had clearly been waiting for him for a while. The moment she spotted him, a charming smile curved onto her red lips. "Good morning, Isaac. Have you had breakfast yet?""Yeah." Isaac walked right past her and headed straight toward the obstetrics department.Julia clutched her wounded abdomen and hurried to match his pace. "How about we grab lunch together?"Isaac ignored her, but she kept pestering him like a lingering shadow. Finally losing his patience, he stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Enough, Julia! Haven't I made myself clear
