Erin Greer's smile froze.

Mark Levine stared at me. He crumpled the prenatal test report in his hand, leaving deep creases across the paper.

The others fell silent briefly before someone chuckled.

"Richard, you've gotten better at controlling your emotions this year. You don't even smash things anymore."

"Erin, you've trained him well, huh?"

Erin covered her mouth with a hand, as if she couldn't hold back anymore. "Alright, that's enough."

Mark's brows instantly relaxed, and he laughed so hard his shoulders shook. "Richard, I'm sorry. Was my acting really that convincing?"

He flipped the report to show me that it bore someone else's name.

The group burst into laughter.

Erin reached out to take my ring. Her voice carried its usual nonchalance. "Your reaction is pretty good today, but taking off your ring is a bit much."

I pulled my hand away, and hers froze midair as she frowned. "Richard Topp."

She only called my full name when she was upset with me.

Mark walked over and placed his arm around my shoulders. "Richard, don't be mad. We put a lot of effort into this. We just wanted to make your anniversary feel a little more special."

I shook him off.

He froze for a moment before whispering, "Did I go too far? I can apologize."

Erin glanced at him, her tone indifferent. "What are you apologizing for? It's not like this is the first time he's seen us act like this."

Then, she took the ring, wiped it clean, and handed it to me. "Put it back on. Stop making a fuss. Everyone's watching."

The others chimed in.

"Richard, don't be a party pooper."

"Yeah, Erin loves you so much. This is just a joke."

"You act like this every year, but in the end, nothing ever comes of it."

Mark let out a sigh and spoke up for me, "Erin, don't be too harsh on Richard. He's been wanting to start a family with you. Maybe this hit a nerve."

Erin looked at me immediately. There was a hint of reproach as well as a familiar touch of impatience in her eyes. "Mark didn't know. Don't lash out at him."

I let out a small laugh. So, they all knew I would be hurt. They just thought that, after I was done licking my wounds, I would go back to Erin anyway.

Erin placed the ring in my palm and lowered her voice. "It's our anniversary today. Don't make a scene and ruin it."

I placed the ring on the table again. "Erin, I'm serious."

Her face hardened. "What do you want?"

I picked up my jacket from the back of the chair as Mark hurried to stop me. "Richard, where are you going? You haven't cut the cake yet."

I stared at the cake with seven candles atop it. Beside each of them sat a photograph.

One was from three years ago, when I stood at the doorway of the private room, my eyes red.

Another was from two years ago, when I signed the divorce papers.

The third was from last year, when I stood beside Erin and Mark as the best man at their fake wedding.

They took pictures of me at my most humiliated moments and turned them into a keepsake.

Erin followed my gaze, her expression shifting slightly. "That was just something Mark put together on a whim. He didn't know it would bother you."

Mark immediately put on an innocent look. "Sorry. I thought it was okay because these were all the memories you two shared."

I nodded and grabbed the middle photo.

In it, my head was bowed, my fists clenched, while Erin stood behind me with a bright smile.

I turned it facedown on the table. "Take your time reminiscing."

Erin finally stood up and clasped my wrist. "Richard, think carefully before you walk out that door."

I lowered my eyes to look at her hand. "I've thought it through."

The private room door opened. A waiter stood outside with the actual anniversary cake, staring at us awkwardly.

Written across the cake were the words, "Wishing Mr. and Mrs. Topp a lifetime of happiness together."

Erin still hadn't let go when Mark whispered, "Erin, he's not really going to divorce you, is he?"

The weather was fantastic on the day we finalized our divorce. Erin showed up early, wearing a light-colored trench coat, her hair pulled back just as it had been when we got married seven years ago.She had been smiling that day. Today, she wasn't.The clerk handed us the documents. I placed mine into the bag. Erin held hers for a long time, gazing down at it.She called out my name and took a small box out of her pocket. A bitter smile appeared on her face when I refused to accept it. "It's not the ring."Erin opened it, revealing a plain silver pendant shaped like a tiny star. "You mentioned wanting to buy this back in college, but in the end, you decided against it so you could get me a birthday gift."I had almost forgotten about it, yet she remembered. So, it wasn't that she couldn't remember. She just hadn't been willing to bring it out before.Erin placed it on the chair beside her. "I don't expect you to keep it. I just wanted to return it to the person you were back the

Mark came to me in the final week before I finalized my divorce from Erin. He stood outside my company entrance and waited for a long time. When he saw me, he immediately straightened up. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and there was exhaustion in his eyes."Richard, I need to talk to you.""We don't have anything to talk about."Mark blocked my path. "My family's projects got suspended, and my dad is planning to send me abroad. I've deleted all those videos and my alternate account. Can you get Erin to let me off the hook?"I glanced at him. "You've come to the wrong person."Despair appeared on his face. "But she's like this because of you."I smiled. "Even now, you still think everything is someone else's fault."Mark clenched his fists tight. "Tell me. What do you want? Should I kneel?"Passersby glanced over as his voice grew louder. "I admit I crossed the line. I admit I enjoyed seeing you humiliated. But you're fine, aren't you? You have a good job, and Erin

I was on a business trip on the day of Erin's birthday. By the time I finished my afternoon meeting, my phone was flooded with messages. Some asked if I was really not coming back. Some mentioned that Erin had drunk too much. Someone even sent a video. In the video, a birthday cake without candles sat on the table. Erin sat in the middle of the group.Mark held a wine glass, looking upset. "Erin, happy birthday. I was too immature. I'm the reason you and Richard ended up like this."Erin didn't take the drink. She looked into the camera, her voice hoarse. "Quiet."A silence enveloped the room.Mark's expression stiffened, and Nathan stepped in to smooth things over. "Erin, Mark meant well."Erin looked up at him. "Did you mean well when you all made fun of Richard back then, too?"No one said anything.Erin grabbed her phone and opened a file. The big screen suddenly lit up. On it were clips of all the so-called surprises they had filmed over the years. Two years ago, when th

Erin was late on the day we were supposed to file for divorce. I sat in the courthouse lobby, watching the clock tick past 20 minutes. My lawyer asked, "Mr. Topp, do you want to reschedule?"I shook my head. "Just give her ten more minutes."Nine minutes later, Erin showed up, dressed in a black coat. She was holding a paper bag. Her hair was slightly disheveled. She then explained, "The traffic was bad."I didn't bother asking if she was telling the truth.Erin handed the paper bag to me. "The cheesecake from that shop you like."I didn't take it.Erin froze, lowering her voice. "It's still hot."I used to love the cheesecake, but Erin had only bought it for me once because of the long queues at that store. However, when Mark said he liked chocolate cookies, she made sure to keep track of every new batch.I told her, "I don't like cakes anymore."Erin lowered her gaze.We went inside to sign the papers when it was our turn. Erin's fingers hovered over the paper for a long

For the first time, Erin didn't play along with the joke.At 9:00 pm, she appeared below my apartment. Rain was falling, but she wasn't carrying an umbrella, and the shoulders of her trench coat were soaked. When I went downstairs to take out the trash, I noticed Erin standing beside her car, smoking. She didn't use to smoke, claiming the smell would linger on her clothes and make me uncomfortable. When Erin spotted me, she immediately stubbed out the cigarette. "Richard."I tossed the trash into the bin. She walked over, her voice softer now. "I've kept it under wraps at the company. No one saw it.""Good for you," I replied. She looked at me, as if not knowing what to say.In the past, I was always the one chasing after her, trying to explain myself. This time, she finally got a taste of what it was like when her words fell on deaf ears."I've read the divorce papers.""Okay.""I don't agree to it."I looked at her.Erin hurriedly added, "I'm not threatening you. I just

Erin stood downstairs as the moving truck pulled away. She didn't chase after it. She only watched me, as if this were a joke that hadn't ended yet.I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of an apartment near my company. I rented this place three months ago. After the fake wedding last year, I started preparing to leave. But at the time, I still hadn't completely given up. I thought Erin would change and realize that I wasn't a prop in all her pranks. I thought that after one of her jokes, she would finally hug me and say she wouldn't do it again. But the change never came. The apartment was tiny, and an old desk stood by the window. I opened my suitcase, and the first thing I took out was a stack of medical records. The doctor had said I'd been under too much stress for too long and that my sleep had been badly affected. He recommended that we put our plans to have a baby on hold. When I brought the records home that day, Erin was practicing vows for the fake wedding wit
