Chapter 2

Autor: Marvelous Meow
Erin pulled me back home, not saying a word during the journey. When the car finally came to a stop in the underground garage, she spoke, "You've totally embarrassed me tonight."

I unfastened my seatbelt. "Have you guys ever done anything to make me look good?"

Erin turned to me, her expression darkened. "Richard, you weren't like this before."

I had heard those words so many times before.

Whenever I didn't smile, she would say, "You weren't like this before."

When I refused to let Mark stay the night at our house, she would say the same thing. When I refused to lend them the fountain pen my father had left me so they could use it in their video, she said it again.

It was as if I had been born to be generous and sensible and to be their source of amusement.

Erin followed me into the elevator, her phone ringing constantly in the background. She glanced at it before answering.

Mark's voice came through, "Erin, are you guys home? Is Richard really okay? I'm afraid he might do something drastic."

Erin's gaze landed on me, her voice softening. "He's fine. He's just gotten worked up."

"Don't be mad at Richard, okay? It's all my fault. I shouldn't have brought up the subject of children."

Erin massaged her temples. "This is not your fault."

By the time she hung up, we had reached our house.

A gift box sat on the coffee table. Erin walked over and opened it, revealing a luxury watch. She picked it up, as if offering me a way to smooth things over. "I had originally intended to give this to you after the meal."

I glanced at it. It was beautiful but also completely unfamiliar. "Who picked this?"

Erin paused. "Mark has good taste, so I asked him to pick out a few options."

I nodded. "Give it to him, then."

She threw the watch back into the box. "Richard, don't try to be sarcastic with me."

I turned and walked toward the bedroom, with Erin following behind me. She tried to suppress her anger. "We've done this every year, and nothing happened. Why can't you accept it this year?"

I stopped in front of the closet. The best man's suit was still hanging inside.

That day, Mark had put on a groom's suit and asked me whether he looked handsome, while Erin laughed. "Richard, you fit right in standing beside us, like family."

Everyone burst out laughing.

I was just as calm now as I was humiliated back then.

Erin followed my gaze and noticed the suit. Her voice hardened. "I explained about this, didn't I?"

"Yeah."

She continued, "It was fake to begin with."

"But I was genuinely humiliated."

She momentarily fell silent before saying, "Do you really have to blow this out of proportion?"

I took the suit and threw it into the trash, but Erin tried to stop me. "Mark said this outfit could be used for the next themed party."

I stared at her. "So, you're keeping it just to make fun of me again?"

Erin seemed annoyed by the question. "It's just a suit."

I retracted my hand, stuffing the suit back into the closet.

Impatience was evident on Erin's face. "Richard, don't push me too far."

The doorbell rang at that moment, and she went over to the door.

Mark was standing outside, holding a cardboard box. There was an unmistakable look of guilt in his eyes. "Richard, I'm returning these to you."

Inside the box were the boutonniere and bow tie they had used as props for their fake wedding last year, along with a preserved-flower case whose glass cover was shattered.

Erin explained, "I took it last year. The glass cover broke. Mark said he'd help fix it and took it away."

Mark added, "Richard, don't get the wrong idea. Erin doesn't remember any of this. It's all my fault."

I picked up the boutonniere, and the dried flowers crumbled in my palm. It turned out I even had to reclaim my wedding keepsake from Mark.

Erin noticed my silence and softened her tone. "Since he gave them back, let's leave it at that."

In response, I dropped the ruined boutonniere into the trash bag.

Mark panicked. "Richard, that's your boutonniere!"

"It's already ruined."

Erin sneered, her eyes fixed on me. "Fine, Richard. You're determined to upset everyone today, huh?"

She grabbed her phone. "Since this bothers you so much, I'll ask everyone to come over, and I'll apologize to you before them. Would that make you happy?"

Before I could speak, she sent a voice message in the group chat. "Come to my house. Richard demands an explanation."

The weather was fantastic on the day we finalized our divorce. Erin showed up early, wearing a light-colored trench coat, her hair pulled back just as it had been when we got married seven years ago.She had been smiling that day. Today, she wasn't.The clerk handed us the documents. I placed mine into the bag. Erin held hers for a long time, gazing down at it.She called out my name and took a small box out of her pocket. A bitter smile appeared on her face when I refused to accept it. "It's not the ring."Erin opened it, revealing a plain silver pendant shaped like a tiny star. "You mentioned wanting to buy this back in college, but in the end, you decided against it so you could get me a birthday gift."I had almost forgotten about it, yet she remembered. So, it wasn't that she couldn't remember. She just hadn't been willing to bring it out before.Erin placed it on the chair beside her. "I don't expect you to keep it. I just wanted to return it to the person you were back the

Mark came to me in the final week before I finalized my divorce from Erin. He stood outside my company entrance and waited for a long time. When he saw me, he immediately straightened up. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and there was exhaustion in his eyes."Richard, I need to talk to you.""We don't have anything to talk about."Mark blocked my path. "My family's projects got suspended, and my dad is planning to send me abroad. I've deleted all those videos and my alternate account. Can you get Erin to let me off the hook?"I glanced at him. "You've come to the wrong person."Despair appeared on his face. "But she's like this because of you."I smiled. "Even now, you still think everything is someone else's fault."Mark clenched his fists tight. "Tell me. What do you want? Should I kneel?"Passersby glanced over as his voice grew louder. "I admit I crossed the line. I admit I enjoyed seeing you humiliated. But you're fine, aren't you? You have a good job, and Erin

I was on a business trip on the day of Erin's birthday. By the time I finished my afternoon meeting, my phone was flooded with messages. Some asked if I was really not coming back. Some mentioned that Erin had drunk too much. Someone even sent a video. In the video, a birthday cake without candles sat on the table. Erin sat in the middle of the group.Mark held a wine glass, looking upset. "Erin, happy birthday. I was too immature. I'm the reason you and Richard ended up like this."Erin didn't take the drink. She looked into the camera, her voice hoarse. "Quiet."A silence enveloped the room.Mark's expression stiffened, and Nathan stepped in to smooth things over. "Erin, Mark meant well."Erin looked up at him. "Did you mean well when you all made fun of Richard back then, too?"No one said anything.Erin grabbed her phone and opened a file. The big screen suddenly lit up. On it were clips of all the so-called surprises they had filmed over the years. Two years ago, when th

Erin was late on the day we were supposed to file for divorce. I sat in the courthouse lobby, watching the clock tick past 20 minutes. My lawyer asked, "Mr. Topp, do you want to reschedule?"I shook my head. "Just give her ten more minutes."Nine minutes later, Erin showed up, dressed in a black coat. She was holding a paper bag. Her hair was slightly disheveled. She then explained, "The traffic was bad."I didn't bother asking if she was telling the truth.Erin handed the paper bag to me. "The cheesecake from that shop you like."I didn't take it.Erin froze, lowering her voice. "It's still hot."I used to love the cheesecake, but Erin had only bought it for me once because of the long queues at that store. However, when Mark said he liked chocolate cookies, she made sure to keep track of every new batch.I told her, "I don't like cakes anymore."Erin lowered her gaze.We went inside to sign the papers when it was our turn. Erin's fingers hovered over the paper for a long

For the first time, Erin didn't play along with the joke.At 9:00 pm, she appeared below my apartment. Rain was falling, but she wasn't carrying an umbrella, and the shoulders of her trench coat were soaked. When I went downstairs to take out the trash, I noticed Erin standing beside her car, smoking. She didn't use to smoke, claiming the smell would linger on her clothes and make me uncomfortable. When Erin spotted me, she immediately stubbed out the cigarette. "Richard."I tossed the trash into the bin. She walked over, her voice softer now. "I've kept it under wraps at the company. No one saw it.""Good for you," I replied. She looked at me, as if not knowing what to say.In the past, I was always the one chasing after her, trying to explain myself. This time, she finally got a taste of what it was like when her words fell on deaf ears."I've read the divorce papers.""Okay.""I don't agree to it."I looked at her.Erin hurriedly added, "I'm not threatening you. I just

Erin stood downstairs as the moving truck pulled away. She didn't chase after it. She only watched me, as if this were a joke that hadn't ended yet.I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of an apartment near my company. I rented this place three months ago. After the fake wedding last year, I started preparing to leave. But at the time, I still hadn't completely given up. I thought Erin would change and realize that I wasn't a prop in all her pranks. I thought that after one of her jokes, she would finally hug me and say she wouldn't do it again. But the change never came. The apartment was tiny, and an old desk stood by the window. I opened my suitcase, and the first thing I took out was a stack of medical records. The doctor had said I'd been under too much stress for too long and that my sleep had been badly affected. He recommended that we put our plans to have a baby on hold. When I brought the records home that day, Erin was practicing vows for the fake wedding wit
