CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“You’re quiet,” he said.

“So there is someone. Who?”

“I can’t tell you,” I muttered. I didn’t feel like being judged more than I already had.

“Why?”

“Because I can’t have her.”

I actually felt sad saying that, and it scared me. Why the hell was I so obsessed with her?

“And why is that?”

I swallowed and contemplated what to say or not.

“Because she’s too young and she’s married to someone else.”

The doctor nodded and took more notes.

“So you have set a limit for yourself. That’s good.”

“Not really,” I mumbled, and he raised his eyebrows, expecting me to tell more.

“I wouldn’t normally care about that. I mean, if she’s up for it...”

I shrugged. There was the usual nonchalance and the detachment. It was shocking really how little I actually cared about other people’s feelings. What I did yesterday to make sure Catherine got her wish fulfilled, was a solid proof. And I didn’t really think about the consequences until now. I’d ruined a marriage for two people who loved each other. Damn.
