The phone didn't stop ringing.

On the detective's desk, the screen pulsed.

*CHIKA*

The detective stared at Jidenna. Jidenna stared at me.

"Put it on speaker," Jidenna said.

The detective swiped.

"Hello?" he said, his voice all officer again, hard and flat. "Who is this?"

Static. Then breathing. Fast, shallow.

Then a woman's voice — but wrong. Hoarse. Broken.

" — don't come. Don't —"

"Chika?" I said before I could stop myself. I stepped forward. "Chika, is that you?"

A sharp inhale on the other end. Like she recognized my voice and it terrified her.

"[Y/N]?" she whispered. It was her. It was really her. "You shouldn't — they said you went to the station — listen to me —"

The line crackled violently.

A second voice cut in. A man's. Calm. Too calm.

"She's not very good at following instructions."

Chika made a sound. A choked sob.

Jidenna's hand slammed down on the desk. "Who is this? Where is she?"

The man laughed, soft. "You have a beautiful house, Jidenna. Very private. Shame about the flowerpots. You should fire your gardener. He missed a spot."

My blood went cold.

The camera. He knew about the camera.

"You were in our compound," Jidenna said. His voice dropped. Dangerous. "You were inside our bedroom wall."

"I was invited," the man said. "By her."

"You're lying."

"Am I? Ask your friend Chika how she got the code to your side gate. Ask her how she got the photos of your wife sleeping."

"Don't listen to him!" Chika screamed suddenly, clear and raw. "He took my phone! He took my phone the night — the night David died! Jidenna, I didn't — I never —"

The line cut to a muffled scuffle. Chika crying out. Then silence.

Then the man's voice again, closer to the mic now.

"You want the truth? Come to the location she sent you. Alone. Both of you. No police. If I see one uniform, I send everything I have — the bedroom pictures, the videos from that camera, and the recording of Chika inside the victim's car — to every blog in Lagos."

The call ended.

Dead tone.

The detective was already moving. "We can trace that — we can triangulate —"

"No," Jidenna said. He was looking at my phone. At the live location pin that was still pulsing.

400 meters away.

Behind the police station.

"He's not 400 meters away," I whispered. "He wants us to think he is."

Jidenna looked at me.

"What?"

"The Polaroid," I said. My hands were shaking again, but my mind was suddenly, terribly clear. "The Polaroid of Chika in the car. Look at the background. Those are OUR gates. She wasn't behind the station when that was taken. She was at the mansion. Today. While we were here."

The detective picked up the Polaroid again. Zoomed in with his eyes.

Jidenna's phone rang this time.

His lawyer.

He answered.

"Yes?"

He listened. Two seconds. Three.

Then he went completely still.

"Say that again."

He put it on speaker.

The lawyer's voice was shaking. "Jidenna, the police just released the name of the victim's second phone contact to the press. It leaked. They're saying on I*******m that Chika was his girlfriend. That you killed him because of her."

I looked at Jidenna.

The mansion.

The bedroom photo.

The murder accusation.

The camera.

Now this.

It was never about murder.

It was about making everyone believe Jidenna had a motive.

Someone has been writing his story page by page — and making us read it.

Outside the small office, the hallway was suddenly filled with flashing lights.

Red and blue.

Not police.

Press.

Someone had told them we were here.

My uncle insisted on a real traditional wedding after hospital. He called Jidenna at midnight after we left the hospital in Lagos and said, "That contract wedding you did in Lagos court is not a wedding. That one started as 3 months after Emeka, who was working for Jidenna, on Amara's wedding night, and she was crying outside in the rain, and Jidenna, Emeka's boss, saw her once and helped her. I did not give my brother's daughter away then on behalf of my late brother. We must do it properly now in village, so village people will know she is not contract wife, she is real wife." So here we are. Umuleri village square. Red sand everywhere. White and red canopies. Plastic chairs. Goat meat smell. Palm wine calabash. My village people sitting, gossiping, but this time not about my naked picture that Vanessa leaked. Abo

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: Sophia 's secret

Lekki Phase 1, House 14, was dark. Amara entered alone, as Vanessa instructed. Her phone was on silent, tracker blinking in her braid. Jidenna and the detective were two streets away in an unmarked car, watching her dot move. Vanessa opened the door herself. She was beautiful, even in anger. Tall, light skin, short hair, wearing a red dress. The same dress Sophia wore in one old picture. "You came," Vanessa said, smiling. "Genius wife. You really love him, abi? Contract wife falling in love with her boss." Amara walked inside. The house smelled of alcohol. Bottles everywhere. On the couch, Ifunanya, the lawyer, was tied, eyes swollen from crying. She was alive. "Let her go," Amara said. "You have me." Vanessa laughed and locked the door. "Let her go? No. She is my witness. She saw Sophia sign the real will. She knows the fake will I made will not stand in court." Ifunanya shook her head violently, trying to speak through tape. Vanessa poured wine. "Do you know why I hate Soph

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: The call

The phone was still ringing on the marble floor. Unknown number. The same number that sent the naked picture. The same number that sent the second picture of us in the living room. Vanessa was calling Amara directly. Twenty-three staff were still locked in the living room. One Tecno phone on the floor had no owner. The owner refused to claim it. That phone took the live picture of us one hour ago and sent it to press outside. That person was still inside this house. Jidenna looked at Amara. Amara's hands were shaking, but her eyes were sharp. That genius eyes that made Jidenna hire her as contract wife in the first place. "Answer it," Jidenna whispered. "Put it on speaker." Amara knelt and picked her phone. Her voice was cold. "Hello." A soft laugh came from the other side. A laugh Amara knew. Everyone in Lagos social circle knew that laugh. "Amara. The contract wife. How are you enjoying my house? My man?" Vanessa. Jidenna's first love. Sophia's best friend before Sophia d

The banging on the main gate got louder BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. It was not a knock. Someone was hitting it with a car. David's radio was screaming. "Sir! Press van trying to force gate! And madam's mother is shouting! She says if you don't open she will climb!" My mother climbing a gate? My mother who cannot walk fast without her knee pain? That alone told me something was terribly wrong. Jidenna looked at me. His eyes were asking me one question. What does your mother have to do with this? I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. "Open the small gate for her only," Jidenna ordered into David's radio. "No press. If any press enters, shoot in the air." David ran. The living room was still locked down. Twenty-three staff, twenty-three phones on the floor. The garden boy with the iPhone was now kneeling, crying. "Sir, I no know wetin dey for the video! • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER FIFTEEN: The insider

The driver never reached the back door. David moved like a man half his size. He lunged, grabbed the driver by his collar, and slammed him hard against the wall. The sound echoed through the whole living room. The driver's cheap phone flew out of his hand and skidded across our marble floor, stopping near my feet. "Emeka! Na Emeka pay me!" He was shouting and crying at the same time, his hands up. "He pay me fifty thousand to cut the wire! He say na just for fifteen minutes! I no know about any picture, sir, I swear!" Jidenna didn't shout. That was what scared me most. His face went completely quiet. That cold, deadly quiet I had only seen once before. "Bring Emeka to me," he said to David, his voice low. "Now." But Mama Nkechi, our cook who has been with us for five years, was already shaking her head, tears running down her face. "He comot, sir. Ten minutes ago. He say him mama dey call am for village. He use kitchen door." He had run. Before anyone could move, my phone buzz
