The Sixth Birthday

Thorne turned six at 6:06 AM.

The world didn’t end.

Barky did.

---

6:05 AM

“Bronte, you cannot cancel a birthday,” I said.

“Watch me,” Bronte said.

He was in the Palace kitchen. Human. Iron axe named Dad on the table. Surrounded by clocks. All stopped. At 6:05. He’d pulled the batteries. Cut the cords. Smashed one with the axe when it kept ticking anyway.

“If she doesn’t turn six,” Bronte said, reasonable like a man arguing with physics, “then the prophecy doesn’t trigger. If the prophecy doesn’t trigger, the Last doesn’t wake. If the Last doesn’t wake —”

“Daddy?”

We froze.

Thorne. In the doorway. Six years old.

She’d grown overnight. Not height. Presence. Antlers were a full inch longer. Gold leaves in her hair. Eyes steady. She was wearing pajamas with wolves on them — Valeria’s gift — and Dad’s cardigan as a cape. It fit better now.

She was six.

The clocks started.

All of them.

6:06.

Barky screamed.

---

The Dream

It wasn’t a sound.

It was ending.

Barky was on Thorne’s bed. Asleep. Or he had been. Now he was stone again. Gray. Cracking. Eyes open. Nothing inside. And from his mouth came dust. And from the dust came shape.

Wings.

Teeth.

Dragon.

Not fae dragon. Not Winter Court ice-drake. Not Green Court vine-wyrm.

Stone dragon.

Ending dragon.

Last dragon.

It pulled itself out of Barky’s mouth like vomit. Like birth. Like nightmare given scale.

Ten feet. Twenty. Thirty.

It didn’t fit in the room.

It didn’t care.

The Palace aged around it. Walls turned to dust. Flowers turned to memory. The God-Tree outside groaned and dropped 100 years of leaves in 1 second.

“Thorne!” Bronte moved.

Human. No powers. Just dad.

He threw himself between her and the dragon.

Iron axe up.

The dragon looked at him.

And Bronte aged.

50. 60.

In three seconds.

Hair white. Hands shaking. Old.

“DADDY!” Thorne screamed.

And the world stopped.

---

Wellie POV — Inside

I was in the Core.

Not metaphor. Literally.

When Barky screamed, when the dragon came out, when Bronte aged, the Core in my chest ripped me in.

Because balance.

Because Heart.

Because if Ending wakes, Beginning has to answer.

I was in a place of roots. Of gold. Of first.

And across from me: Barky.

Not puppy. Not stone. Boy.

Six years old. Brown hair. Brown eyes. Human. Terrified.

“You’re Last,” I said.

“I’m Barky,” he said. Sobbing. “I don’t wanna be Last. I like Thorne. I like naps. I like not ending.”

“Then don’t,” I said.

“I can’t,” Barky said. “She turned six. The dream said. When Queen turns six, Last *wakes.* I’m waking. And he’s waking with me.”

“Who?”

“The other me,” Barky said. “The before me. The dragon. The Ending I’m supposed to be.”

He looked at his hands.

They were stone.

“I ate him,” Barky said. “When Thorne pet me. When Thorne loved me. I ate Ending and became Barky. But he’s still in me. And he’s hungry. And Thorne is six. And six means choice.”

He looked at me.

“Make her un-choose me,” Barky begged. “Make her let go. Before I eat her Daddy all the way.”

---

Thorne POV — Age 6

Daddy was old.

Not died old. Still old.

White hair. Wrinkles. Bent. Like Grandpa James in the pictures.

The dragon did it.

The dragon that came out of Barky.

Barky was gone.

Dragon was here.

And it was looking at me.

Queen, it said. Not sound. Stone. In my bones. You are six. You *chose me. You named me. You loved me. Now feed me.*

“No,” I said.

Feed me *him.* Looking at Daddy. Feed me *Heart.* Looking at Mama, who was gone, who was inside. Feed me *World.*

“No,” I said. Louder.

You *have to*, the dragon said. I am *Ending. I am Last. I am what happens. You made me wait. You made me puppy. Now pay.*

I looked at Daddy.

He was on his knees. Axe dropped. Old hands shaking.

But his eyes were Dad.

“Hey,” he said. Wheezing. Old voice. “Thorne Thorne.”

“Yeah, Daddy?”

“Don’t,” he said. “You don’t pay. You don’t feed. You don’t give.”

He coughed. Dust.

“You take,” Daddy said. “You’re Queen. You take back.”

The dragon laughed.

From *me?* it said. I am *stone. I am time. I am never.*

“Then I’ll take never,” I said.

I was five minutes ago.

Now I was Queen.

I walked to the dragon.

Barefoot. Pajamas. Cape. Crown you couldn’t see but could.

“Give him back,” I said.

No.

“Give. Him. Back.”

I touched the dragon.

And I took.

Not age. Time.

Not life. Story.

I took the dragon’s name.

---

Wellie POV — Inside Barky

Barky screamed.

Not boy. Dragon.

“Thorne!” I screamed. “Stop!”

“She can’t,” Barky said. Boy again. Stone arms. Breaking. “She’s Queen. Queens take. Queens unmake. She’s unmaking him. She’s unmaking me.”

“Good,” I said.

“No!” Barky said. “If he goes, I go! I’m Last! I’m Ending! You need Ending! Or nothing ends! Or everything is always! Always is worse!”

He was right.

Gods, he was right.

“Then what?” I said. “We let him eat Bronte?”

“No,” Barky said.

He looked at me.

“You eat me.”

“What?”

“You’re Heart,” Barky said. “You’re Beginning. I’m Ending. Balance. But not like this. Not him. Me. Puppy me. Barky me. Love me.”

“Thorne loves you —”

“Thorne is six,” Barky said. “Six is too much. Six is Queen. Six is choice and burden and war. You take me. You hold me. You be Ending. So she can be kid.”

He held out his hands.

Stone. Cracking. Scared.

“Please,” Barky said. “I’m tired. I’m six too. I don’t wanna be Last. I wanna be Barky. And Barky belongs to Mama.”

---

Real World

I came back.

Core slammed into me.

And I was holding him.

Not dragon. Not stone. Barky.

Puppy. Six years old. Real.

And I was Ending.

I felt it.

In my bones. In my teeth. In the Core.

Age. Dust. Time.

I looked at Bronte.

He was young again.

60 to 34 in one second.

Because I took it.

I took Ending.

“Wellington,” Bronte said. Staring.

“It’s okay,” I said.

My hair was gray.

My hands were lined.

I was 35.

No. 45.

No. 55.

I stopped it.

Held it.

“Thorne,” I said.

She’d stopped.

Hand on the dragon.

The dragon was gone.

Just dust.

And in the dust: egg.

Stone egg. Cracked.

Empty.

Thorne looked at me.

At my hair. At my hands.

“Mama?” she said. Small. Six. Scared.

“It’s okay, baby,” I said.

I smiled.

With older face.

“Mama’s got him now.”

Barky wagged.

And licked my face.

I didn’t age.

He didn’t take.

Because I was Ending now.

I decided.

---

After — 1 Hour Later

The Palace was old.

Not destroyed. Aged. 100 years in 10 minutes. Vines thick. Moss deep. Ancient.

But alive.

Bronte was 34. Again. Human. Again. Holding me.

“You’re…” he said. Touching my hair. Gray. Silver. Beautiful, he’d said. Liar, I’d said.

“I’m 55,” I said. “Give or take.”

“You’re you,” he said.

Thorne was on the floor. With Barky. Puppy Barky. Safe Barky. Drained Barky. He was tired. Mortal tired. Not Ending tired.

“Did I do bad?” Thorne asked. Quiet. Six. Burden.

“No,” I said. “You did Queen.”

“I didn’t wanna,” Thorne said. Tears. “I wanted cake. And dragon. Not real dragon. Toy dragon. Cake dragon.”

“I know, baby,” Bronte said.

He gathered her up.

“You saved me,” he said. Into her hair. “You took time back from a god. For me.”

“For us,” Thorne said.

She looked at me.

“You took Barky,” she said.

“I did,” I said.

“Are you Ending now?”

“Yes.”

“Is that bad?”

I looked at my hands. Lined. Powerful.

“No,” I said. “Because I choose when.”

Rian’s tree rustled.

A book fell.

The Wild Crown: Book III

It opened.

Chapter 1: The Heart That Ends

The Queen turned six. The Last woke. The Heart *ate it.*

Now the Heart is *both.*

Now the Heart *decides.*

Underneath, in Thorne’s crayon:

GOOD. MAMA IS STRONGEST.

Underneath that, in stone-ink:

For now.

---

Epilogue: The Egg

The stone egg wasn’t empty.

Eli found it. In the dust.

Brought it to Rian’s tree.

Rian wrapped it in roots. Safe. Watching.

“Is it him?” Eli asked. “The dragon?”

“No,” Rian’s leaves spelled. New. Different. *After.*

“After what?” Valeria asked.

The egg pulsed.

Once.

Thump.

Like a heartbeat.

Like a promise.

Like a dragon that wasn’t Ending.

Like a Beginning.
