ASHLEY’S POV
“Hold on!” I yelled, running towards the gate. My backpack was pulling me back and the traveling bag in my left hand was weighing me downward, but none of that was enough to stop me. “Gates close at 11pm! All the packs received the information.” The guard said, struggling to close the gates. Luckily, it was a very heavy one and allowed me room to arrive. “I know. I know.” I responded. “But if it wasn’t an emergency, I wouldn’t be late,”I explained, handing out my pack badge. “Crystal pack,” he read, “some lousy girl…” the guard hesitated, “never mind. You're welcome,” he held the gate slightly open and let me through. I rushed into the premises and found everyone walking in one direction. None of them had a backpack and I didn't want to be fished out so quickly, so I hid my bags in one corner and went along with everyone else. We all converged at a hall and I took a seat at the back. “The council will be here any minute,” a voice announced as everyone else settled down. I looked around, extremely nervous. I knew the fact that I had gone through those gates meant that this could only go one of two ways–either very bad or very good. My heart was racing very fast. “We welcome you all to the fifth edition of Summer Royal Academy,” a man came up on stage with the speech he started from the office beside the stage. “You all know the reason you’re here. The twenty-five packs of the kingdom hold a quinquennial training of its princes, who will not only lead their pack to greatness, but also the kingdom to unity and positive advancement. Everything here is important, including your relationship with one another, and you're advised to treat it as such. The kingdom of Achaia is depending on you.” Everyone in the hall clapped energetically as the man finished his speech. “How about we begin with an introduction?” The man said, “Let’s begin from behind. You,” She pointed at one of the guys in front. “Prince Xavier Abel of Red Moon pack,” I immediately recognized him as the jerk who had insulted me and told me I wouldn't pass as Zeta's daughter and that I didn't belong here. I rolled my eyes to the back of my skull. “And you?” I heard a voice from a distance. “You!” The next time I heard the voice, it was accompanied by a pat on the shoulder by another prince sitting beside me. I was snapped back into real time. I got up, took a good look at every single person seated. I felt naked before them, like they could see right through me under the straight array of white lights that was over our heads in the hall. “Prince Asher Smichtt of Crystal pack,” I introduced, after gulping in a good amount of saliva. Well, that was my new identity now–Prince Asher. I no longer wanted to be labeled the weak and useless princess, who needed a man to amount to anything. I needed my father all my life and his attempt to marry me off meant that he believed I needed a man. I also needed to prove to the entire Achaia kingdom that princesses are just as good as princes. It was about time for a change. **** “Here’s your room. I hope you’re excited about the next three months,” The guard stopped at the front of an apartment, handing me a key. “Thank you very much,” I took the key from him, eager to go in. I needed a bath and also needed some sleep. It had been one hell of a day. One day I didn't think it would change because of a hair cut, some facial hairs and change of clothing, but here we were. “You’re welcome.” He responded with a smile. “I must say, I am quite excited to have you here. I really thought your father would not allow you to be here. I’m glad to see he remembers the importance of the camp.” My heart dropped to my stomach as he spoke and I realized he knew my father. I held up a very faint and sheepish smile. ‘Was this the part where things go from really good to really bad?’ “After you were born and your mother died, he dissociated from the other packs of the kingdom. He didn’t say a word to anyone about the beautiful child your mother had.” The guard looked at me with so much admiration in his eyes. I was in awe. Outside the pack house, all they knew was that my mother had a child. I wasn’t sure if to be angry that my father tried to hide me, because he was ashamed I was female, or to be thankful that his well kept secret afforded me the opportunity to be a whole new person out here. Since I wasn’t sure of my feelings, or what answers were appropriate, I kept smiling at the guard. “Alright! I’ll let you settle in now. You should rest.” I thanked the guard again and watched him walk away until he was out of sight, then I shut the door behind me and heaved a sigh of relief, leaning against the door. I could not believe my life. Everything still felt very much ethereal. I didn't get to digest it, before the door tried to forcefully open from behind me. “Who's there?” I pushed back very hard. I got no response and although the push back stopped, the person continued knocking on the door, the next knock more aggressive than the last. “Kill me,” I whispered as I opened the door. I froze right at the door. His ocean blue eyes were still as dreamy as I remembered from the morning. ‘my arrogant god in pink’, only this time, he was wearing a powdered blue skin vest that matched his headphones. The seconds I was lost in his eyes felt like an eternity, but only because I could live the feeling for an eternity. “How did you find me?” I probed in a tender voice. Confusion immediately overtook his face. “What do you mean? I live here,” he walked right past me and into the room, taking off his shirt. Again, I froze in time, trying to process what was happening. ‘I had to live with the same arrogant prince I had a huge crush on?’ “Prince Vance Louis of Half moon pack,” he said, “and you are?” he probed, while I thought, ‘was it too late to tell the truth?’ASHLEY'S POV I spent all night pacing the room, after searching everywhere with no hope. I knew Vance was stupid enough to leave camp, or weak enough to have been killed if he did–I hoped he was not. I could not rest, even if I tried and I finally lost every bit of peace. I watched the sun blossom from a small orange glow in the sky to a full fire ball, lighting up the earth. There was still no trace of Vance. At the 7am alarm, I went into the bathroom and got ready for the day's activities.‘Vance knew what was at stake, right?’ I thought. Missing a day of training without a sick pass meant that you had exited camp and exiting camp would mean a strike and in Vance's case, another strike meant he had to leave camp. “Asher!” I walked with my face forward and pretended not to listen as Xavier called me, but Xavier would not stop chasing after me, continually calling my name, each time louder than the last. “Could you please hear me out?” He finally overtook me and stood in my way. “
ASHLEY'S POV I stormed out of the room with so much tears in my eyes that I was trying to hide from him. Of course, I shook hands on friendship with Xavier. If I spent any more time with Vance, there was no way I wouldn't reveal who I was and there was no telling how that was going to go down. Xavier had really been nice and not as terrible as I first knew, but I wasn't spending all my time with him because I couldn't get enough of him. I was spending all my time with him because it was better than spending all my time with Vance. Around Xavier, I had my guard and acted up, but with Vance, I got too comfortable and forgot I'm a totally different person. I knew Vance was hurt, but I had to think about myself first. “Let’s go,” Xavier held my hand and pulled me away from the hall, where I was meeting him. “Where are we going?” I probed, with very little resistance. “You need to see something cool,” Xavier was very unrelenting. If I hadn't learnt anything in the past week, at least
VANCE’S POV “Hey! I’ve been looking for you,” Asher rushed to me, pretty very hyped up. “It's time for our training, I've been waiting for you,” I responded, keeping a very straight face. “Yes, I was going to tell you that I'd be unable to make it for training today.” He said, “Xavier and I need to…” I turned around and walked away. His mention of that name was all I needed. It was the third time this week, Asher had canceled our training and that he and Xavier had something to do or another thing was his excuse. “Vance! Vance!” I heard him call from behind me, but I did not respond, I continued to the apartment, not taking another glance at his face. “Argh!!” I groaned in frustration, kicking the air as I got into the apartment. Seeing him spend so much time with Xavier was eating me up. They were slowly becoming too friendly. Asher canceled on training with me to be with Xavier, even when they had no punishment to serve and he returned to the apartment extremely late, most tim
ASHLEY'S POV “Ready?” Vance walked back into the room after a few minutes. My heart had been racing fast. Our lips were almost touching and I had no idea how I was going to explain that to him, considering he knew me as Asher. At first, I was relieved the guard interrupted, but now I was just worried. “We have to train. We don't want to lose the whole day,” ‘Was he just going to act like nothing happened? Was it wise for me to bring it up? If I did bring it up, what was I going to do? Tell him the truth?’ My thoughts were unending, but I decided to play along, until I was sure of my course of action. I picked up a jacket and walked out of the room, with Vance following behind me. “The first thing to remember here is; it's all for the board.” He said, “the ranking is the most important thing and you're not at a very good place, but the most of our journey is ahead of us, we can fix it.” I checked his speech for inconsistencies or signs of worry, but there was none at all. It was lik
VANCE'S POV “What do you need?” I hurriedly tried to wipe the tears from my eyes, looking away from him, so he didn't notice. Asher stood confused for a minute at the door. I sniffled, took a deep breath and turned to him.“You said you need my help, what do you need my help with?” I asked, now in a more stable place. “Are you okay?” His voice was soft with concern, as he closed the gap between us. I nodded, still trying to say as few words as possible, because my voice was still cracked from all the crying. “You're crying,” his small, tender hand rested on my shoulder and the touch sent shock through my spine. “I'm not crying,” my response was extremely defensive. “I don't know what the problem is, but it's okay to feel the burden so much that you want to breakdown,” I knew Asher was trying to be comforting, but his response came off as really weird. The first rule of being an Alpha Prince is to never cry. No one was allowed to see our tears and when we hold it together long enoug
ASHLEY'S POV “Thank you,” I said hurriedly, realizing how awkward everything now was, “I meant to say thank you. Where I come from, marriage is the height of appreciation and it just slipped.” I babbled an explanation. I saw the weird look in Vance's eyes, even he wasn't convinced, so I went ahead of him and dashed out of the bathroom, before he had the time to come up with a reply. “Oh, I'm going to fail hard,” I whispered to myself. At this point, I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that my journey was driving down the path of very bad. “What's going on here?” I asked, as I approached a large gathering of the princes. It was very difficult to see above their shoulders, as they were all way taller than I. Luckily, I took advantage of my body size and squeezed between them to the front of the crowd. “There he is,” one of the princes announced. It wasn't until after his announcement that the crowd had circled around me. “What is going on here?” I tried to sound bold, clenching m
