ASHLEY’S POV
“Summer Royal Academy” The sign read. I walked down the path of the sign until I was staring at a big black gate. It had hefty pillars built on the sides and even though it read ‘academy’ at the gate, it could pass for a prison. “Miss, are you lost?” A very hefty man walked up to me from the gate and questioned. I gulped in a wholesome amount of saliva, terrified by the mere size of the man, before attempting to respond to his question. “I am the princess of…” “You can't be here miss,” The man seemed very uninterested in my introduction. I was at first astonished by how disinterested he was in my introduction. I took another look at myself and I could see how he was confused. My dress and hair was covered in twigs from sleeping under a tree. I couldn't help but chortle. “Sir, I can see where the confusion is coming from. I know it doesn't look like it, but I am a royal,” I tried to explain, but the man seemed even more disinterested, he shoved me away with his hands. “Miss, you have to leave right now. You can’t be here.” I stood there in bedazzlement. He spread his hands so it was impossible for me to move. We only stood there for about a minute, before three young men came down the path. “This way, sir,” The hefty guard's voice immediately became soft as he led the men to the gate. I watched as the hefty guard let them through, after showing their pack badge at the gate. I checked the pocket of my dress and heaved a sigh of relief when I found my pack badge. My father's first rule was to always have a pack badge with me. I always wondered why, since I never left the pack house and everyone I interacted with knew who I was, but now I was grateful. Only royals owned pack badges. I held the badge in my hand and hurried to show the guard at the gate. “Crystal pack,” I held out the badge, very confidently. I wanted to see the look on his face when he realized he had mistreated a royal, simply because I had a little dirt on my hair and dress. The man erupted in laughter, which left me in awe for a few seconds. I had imagined different reactions, but this was not a part of it. “Yea, right. If Alpha Smichtt had a daughter, I would know.” He said, “You know my father…” “And he doesn't have a daughter,” the man interrupted strongly. “I'm sure you stole that badge and I'd advise that you return it. Only because I'm not allowed to arrest females.” The guard said, trying very hard not to laugh at me any more than he already did. “Why are we so full of laughter?” A voice came from behind me. I didn't turn around. I was too humiliated to look at any more faces, not after all the humiliation I had gotten. I could now see what my father was trying to protect me from, restricting me to the pack house–it was a cold world outside. “She was just about leaving,” the guard reported to the young man, who gave me a scrutinizing stare from the tip of my hair to those of my toenails. “The academy only accommodates princes,” the young man, pulling out his badge, “you could barely pass as Zeta's daughter. Not with the way you look.” he walked in. I clenched my fist in anger. ‘Red Moon pack,’ I read his badge and watched him till the gates closed and he was on the other side, out of my sight. “Like I said, miss, you can’t be here.” The guard reiterated, this time sounding annoyed. I scoffed, turned around and stormed away angrily. He didn't need to tell me twice anymore. I was furious. I was just disrespected not only for my looks, but also for not being male, because I was sure all the princes that walked in had no special regalia on. I angrily wandered, kicking the air and talking to myself, until I sighted a small cottage not very far off. I walked to it, hoping to at least get a cup of water and with a little luck, something to eat. It had been over about fifteen hours since I left home and I was starving. “Hello?” I knocked on the door but was met with silence. “Hello!” I called out even louder, but my feedback wasn’t any better. I looked around for a while and found no one in sight. I couldn't afford to go back, I was going to pass out from dehydration, so I slowly pushed the door. “Hello?” I walked in cautiously. I looked around for a while and established that the cottage was empty. I walked around, entering into the bedroom. The cottage was covered in dust, indicating that it had not been used in a while. I stared at myself in the mirror behind the door, wondering how I found myself here. “If Alpha Smichtt had a daughter, I would know,”I remembered the words of the guard. He sounded like he knew my father very well, but if he did, how did he not know that my father had a daughter? ‘Was my father ashamed of me?’ I couldn't help the thought that flooded into my mind. The young man at the gate did mention the academy was only open to princes and the way to identify was the pack badge. Was there a chance my father never spoke about me, or attended external events with me because he was ashamed I wasn't a prince? Was this the reason he was marrying me off? Someone to take over from him? As this possibility became clear to me, it broke my heart even more. I folded in bed and cried for hours unending. I was thirsty, hungry and tired, but I could neither eat, drink nor sleep. My whole life flashed before my eyes and it was a lie. All of my father's actions that I thought was love was just because he was abashed. “That's enough!” I said to myself, pushing myself up with support from my hands. I walked to the mirror and stared at the reflection of my battered face. My eyes were red and swollen and my eye sockets were black, my cheeks were puffed up and I barely looked like myself. ‘I barely looked like myself!’ it echoed again in my head. A smile plastered across my inflamed face. I had an idea.ASHLEY'S POV I spent all night pacing the room, after searching everywhere with no hope. I knew Vance was stupid enough to leave camp, or weak enough to have been killed if he did–I hoped he was not. I could not rest, even if I tried and I finally lost every bit of peace. I watched the sun blossom from a small orange glow in the sky to a full fire ball, lighting up the earth. There was still no trace of Vance. At the 7am alarm, I went into the bathroom and got ready for the day's activities.‘Vance knew what was at stake, right?’ I thought. Missing a day of training without a sick pass meant that you had exited camp and exiting camp would mean a strike and in Vance's case, another strike meant he had to leave camp. “Asher!” I walked with my face forward and pretended not to listen as Xavier called me, but Xavier would not stop chasing after me, continually calling my name, each time louder than the last. “Could you please hear me out?” He finally overtook me and stood in my way. “
ASHLEY'S POV I stormed out of the room with so much tears in my eyes that I was trying to hide from him. Of course, I shook hands on friendship with Xavier. If I spent any more time with Vance, there was no way I wouldn't reveal who I was and there was no telling how that was going to go down. Xavier had really been nice and not as terrible as I first knew, but I wasn't spending all my time with him because I couldn't get enough of him. I was spending all my time with him because it was better than spending all my time with Vance. Around Xavier, I had my guard and acted up, but with Vance, I got too comfortable and forgot I'm a totally different person. I knew Vance was hurt, but I had to think about myself first. “Let’s go,” Xavier held my hand and pulled me away from the hall, where I was meeting him. “Where are we going?” I probed, with very little resistance. “You need to see something cool,” Xavier was very unrelenting. If I hadn't learnt anything in the past week, at least
VANCE’S POV “Hey! I’ve been looking for you,” Asher rushed to me, pretty very hyped up. “It's time for our training, I've been waiting for you,” I responded, keeping a very straight face. “Yes, I was going to tell you that I'd be unable to make it for training today.” He said, “Xavier and I need to…” I turned around and walked away. His mention of that name was all I needed. It was the third time this week, Asher had canceled our training and that he and Xavier had something to do or another thing was his excuse. “Vance! Vance!” I heard him call from behind me, but I did not respond, I continued to the apartment, not taking another glance at his face. “Argh!!” I groaned in frustration, kicking the air as I got into the apartment. Seeing him spend so much time with Xavier was eating me up. They were slowly becoming too friendly. Asher canceled on training with me to be with Xavier, even when they had no punishment to serve and he returned to the apartment extremely late, most tim
ASHLEY'S POV “Ready?” Vance walked back into the room after a few minutes. My heart had been racing fast. Our lips were almost touching and I had no idea how I was going to explain that to him, considering he knew me as Asher. At first, I was relieved the guard interrupted, but now I was just worried. “We have to train. We don't want to lose the whole day,” ‘Was he just going to act like nothing happened? Was it wise for me to bring it up? If I did bring it up, what was I going to do? Tell him the truth?’ My thoughts were unending, but I decided to play along, until I was sure of my course of action. I picked up a jacket and walked out of the room, with Vance following behind me. “The first thing to remember here is; it's all for the board.” He said, “the ranking is the most important thing and you're not at a very good place, but the most of our journey is ahead of us, we can fix it.” I checked his speech for inconsistencies or signs of worry, but there was none at all. It was lik
VANCE'S POV “What do you need?” I hurriedly tried to wipe the tears from my eyes, looking away from him, so he didn't notice. Asher stood confused for a minute at the door. I sniffled, took a deep breath and turned to him.“You said you need my help, what do you need my help with?” I asked, now in a more stable place. “Are you okay?” His voice was soft with concern, as he closed the gap between us. I nodded, still trying to say as few words as possible, because my voice was still cracked from all the crying. “You're crying,” his small, tender hand rested on my shoulder and the touch sent shock through my spine. “I'm not crying,” my response was extremely defensive. “I don't know what the problem is, but it's okay to feel the burden so much that you want to breakdown,” I knew Asher was trying to be comforting, but his response came off as really weird. The first rule of being an Alpha Prince is to never cry. No one was allowed to see our tears and when we hold it together long enoug
ASHLEY'S POV “Thank you,” I said hurriedly, realizing how awkward everything now was, “I meant to say thank you. Where I come from, marriage is the height of appreciation and it just slipped.” I babbled an explanation. I saw the weird look in Vance's eyes, even he wasn't convinced, so I went ahead of him and dashed out of the bathroom, before he had the time to come up with a reply. “Oh, I'm going to fail hard,” I whispered to myself. At this point, I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that my journey was driving down the path of very bad. “What's going on here?” I asked, as I approached a large gathering of the princes. It was very difficult to see above their shoulders, as they were all way taller than I. Luckily, I took advantage of my body size and squeezed between them to the front of the crowd. “There he is,” one of the princes announced. It wasn't until after his announcement that the crowd had circled around me. “What is going on here?” I tried to sound bold, clenching m
