NIKOLAI VOLKOV

AT DAWN…

Consciousness returned like a blow—brutal and sudden. My head pounded while the world spun around me.

My eyes opened to an unfamiliar room. And then I felt it—the warmth of a soft body against mine. The weight of someone else's arm over the sheet.

What I saw made my blood run cold instantly. A woman. She had her back to me and was completely naked, her shoulders thin, her skin delicate and pale. Dark hair spread across the pillow.

My instinct, still dulled by the drug, was one of alarm. "Who the hell is that?" As if she felt the weight of my gaze, she moved. A sigh, a shiver. And then she turned.

In that moment I felt my world stop—on her face, an enormous scar.

A violent line that snaked from her temple to her mouth, a mark of brutality immortalized on delicate features. She was a young woman. And I didn't know her. Had no idea who she was.

Our eyes met. Hers, green, widened in horror. She opened her mouth to scream.

"Shut up, you damn woman!" I growled, my voice a rough roar that echoed through the silent room.

The fright silenced her but did not calm her. She shrank back, pulling the sheets to cover her naked body, an uncontrollable tremor running through her.

"Who are you?" she whispered, her voice a thread of horror. "What are you doing in my bed? Naked?"

Before I could answer, the door burst open with violence.

And there they were. Victoria in front, with a vengeful smile. Behind her, the Harringtons—Richard with his look of fake disappointment, Elizabeth with her hand on her chest, feigning shock.

"My God!" Elizabeth exclaimed, her voice pure theater. "Nikolai… you… you have dishonored my daughter! And my poor daughter Angeline was… raised in a boarding school!"

Old Richard stepped forward, his steely gaze piercing me. "You have corrupted her purity under my roof! In our tradition, you know the price. You will take responsibility and marry her. A man of your standing must set an example!"

And then Victoria. Her blue eyes gleamed with triumphant hatred as they swept over the scene: me, still dazed in bed, and her sister, the "deformed" one, trembling like a leaf.

She laughed, a cold sound. "Who would have thought, Nikolai? You resisted me because you have such… peculiar tastes. Like the freak show, do you?" Her eyes turned to her sister. "And you, little sister? Raised like a saint, and in the end… you're a whore."

"No!" the girl shouted, desperate. "That's not true! I've never slept with him, I don't even know him! Why is he in my room?"

She cried, trembled, seemed on the verge of an attack. And I… I almost fell for that act. Almost.

But I wasn't that stupid. The obvious was right there before my eyes. The final piece of that damn trap was precisely the fake innocence, the choreographed desperation. She was in on the game, just like all the Harringtons. They were accomplices in binding me to this… thing.

It wasn't a mistake. It was a trap—perfect and sadistic.

The roar of the limousine engine shutting off pulls me from the past. I'm back. Before my new prison. With the woman who was the instrument of my downfall.

I look at Angeline, still huddled in her corner. The veil is a symbol of all this: a cover for a filthy truth. And I was the fool who fell for their rotten fairy tale.

I had barely crossed the threshold of the main hall of the mansion, pulling Angeline along like a burden at my side, when I came upon that grotesque scene. My father, Ivan Volkov, and the other lords of the clan, as well as the Harringtons, were already waiting for us.

Looking at the triumphant face of Victoria and her parents, my blood boiled, but I controlled myself.

My father's icy gaze still reminded me of the damn shame I felt later, when I arrived at the Volkov mansion and had to tell my father in his study.

"It was a trap, Father," I explained, my voice loaded with contained rage. "They drugged me. They put that woman in my bed."

Ivan Volkov, the Old Bear, looked at me, his face marked by wrinkles and suspicion. His silence was more frightening than any shouting.

"And you fell, son," he finally said, his voice a low growl. "Fell like a rookie. Now you're tied to that damn family—tied to the… Harringtons."

"I'm not tied to anything," I retorted, my eyes fixed on his. "The marriage is just a piece of paper. And it will be the perfect excuse to destroy them."

He studied my face for a long moment, the disappointment in his eyes slowly giving way to a glint of dark resignation.

"I hope you know what you're doing, Nikolai," he muttered, turning to the window. "You are the Pakhan now. Your decisions affect all of us."

"I know exactly what I'm doing, Father," I answered, the image of Victoria smiling burning in my mind. "Exactly."

And I did. I organized that idiot wedding myself. To them, it was my surrender. To me, it was the first shovel digging their grave. No one plays with Nikolai Volkov.

NIKOLAI VOLKOVTwo years had passed. The twins were almost three years old — an age full of energy, discoveries, sudden tantrums, and hugs that could melt any man. Ângelo was quieter, more observant, with the same dark blue eyes and that silent intensity of someone who analyzes the world before acting — the same intensity Angeline defined. Yelena, on the other hand, was pure chatter and fire: she ran through the house giving orders, laughed loudly, and already showed an independence that filled me with both pride and worry at the same time. She was so much like her mother.I had changed. I had not become a saint — the beast still lived inside me, always alert, ready to destroy anyone who threatened what was mine. But the blind fury, the pathological jealousy that had almost destroyed everything… that was behind us. We had learned to trust. To talk before anger decided for us. To respect each other’s limits.Angeline had become an unstoppable force. Her project had grown beyond every e

NIKOLAI VOLKOVThe months that followed were the happiest of my life. Being finally forgiven by Angeline, watching her tear up and throw that damned divorce paper into the fire, lit an incredible warmth in my chest. But as always in our lives, happiness never comes completely clean, and it always exacts a price. In the months that followed, the threats did not stop—on the contrary, they intensified.Even with the strengthened alliance beside Elizaveta, Angeline’s work continued to unsettle the old clans. Men who for decades had treated women as merchandise saw in her foundation and in her voice a direct threat to their power. Reports arrived almost every week: whispered conversations, secret meetings, plans to “silence her.”“They want to silence you,” I told her one night after reading another report. We were in the office, the low light illuminating her determined face. “And they won’t hesitate.”“Then we won’t give them that chance,” Angeline answered, holding my hand. “I’m not goi

ANGELINE HARRINGTONThat night, after Ângelo and Yelena finally fell asleep, Nikolai let me know he wouldn't be back for dinner. "Business," he said only, with that tone I knew so well. I apologized to Mila and stayed alone with my thoughts. I always knew what those "business" meant. Nikolai was the Pakhan. That would never change. And, as much as it hurt, I had to accept that, to keep our family alive and safe, he would have to continue being the monster the world feared.Hours later, through the large living room window, I saw the headlights cutting through the darkness. Dimitri got out of the car first, followed by Nikolai. Even from afar, I could see the dark stains on their shirts. Blood. My chest tightened, but I took a deep breath. It wasn't the first time. Nor would it be the last.I went up to the bedroom before he entered the house. I didn't want to face him yet. A few minutes later, I went down to the garden. It was summer, and the night brought a pleasant chill. The scent

  • Máfia's Hated Bride   CHAPTER 167

ANGELINE HARRINGTON From that moment on, I don't remember much. I felt that moment, like those when the mind goes blank. And everything passes in a blur to spare us from the pain. What I remember is what came after. My father's funeral was beautiful. All organized by Nikolai and by my father's right-hand man, who was more than an employee, he was a friend. I couldn't understand or do anything anymore — I was just an automaton. I only remember the white flowers everywhere, the soft music, the people who admired Nathan Rothschild coming to pay their respects. I barely saw. Barely heard. The world seemed distant, blurred, unreal. Nikolai didn't leave my side. He held my hand during the condolences, squeezed my shoulder when my legs weakened, kissed my forehead when the crying came uncontrollably. That was when I began to notice. One by one, they arrived. Women I never imagined seeing at a funeral. Women I had helped in recent months — some with tears in their eyes, others with faces

  • Máfia's Hated Bride   CHAPTER 166

ANGELINE HARRINGTONThe two days that passed were a true torment.Living there with him stirred up everything we had lived through and left me totally vulnerable to the feelings I had never forgotten. Not during the mornings, because at those times we didn't see each other. From dawn until night, I spent the day working at my father's company, and he at his businesses. But the nights… all the longing I had already felt for months for Nikolai's body, for the desire, for his want of me, was now stronger. My body burned for him. And I felt that he felt the same thing for me.And I felt it on the very first night I arrived there, after kissing my children goodnight, he also came in and did the same. Playing with Yelena's delicate hair and with Ângelo's little face while both slept. Then we left the babies' room together in silence. But as soon as we left, he said:— You have no idea how many nights I wished for this ardently — he spoke with an intense look.— To be able to say goodnight a

  • Máfia's Hated Bride   CHAPTER 165

ANGELINE HARRINGTONI returned to the car with a lighter heart, but the apprehension still weighed on me. The threats continued. The alliance with Elizaveta was a step, but not a solution. When I arrived at Nikolai's mansion — which was once ours — I felt strange. I had left all that behind almost ten months ago, but I still felt I belonged to that place, even though I was no longer his wife, although officially I was still Angeline Volkov.I was still thinking heavily about this when I set my bag on the sofa. That was when Yulia appeared in the hallway, her face pale.— Ma'am, little Ângelo has a fever. Very hot.My heart stopped.— Call the doctor. Now. — I ran to the twins' room. Ângelo was red, panting, his eyes glazed. Yelena looked at her little brother, confused, her lips trembling as if she were about to cry. They were still very much babies — only eleven months — but they were very attached, as all twin siblings are.I called Nikolai. He wasn't home yet — he knew I would arri
