A Small Beginning

Emilia

“Congratulations!”

The man’s voice boomed across the small office as his hand grabbed mine and shook it enthusiastically.

“Congratulations, Miss Moretti!” he repeated. “Welcome to our company!”

I forced a bright smile even though his grip was a little too tight.

“Thank you, sir,” I said politely.

The man standing before me was large. Not just tall, but wide. His stomach pressed against the edge of the desk as he leaned forward. His cheeks were round and slightly red, and when he smiled, his eyes nearly disappeared.

His name was Manager Raymond.

He wiped his forehead with a handkerchief before speaking again.

“I’m telling you,” he said excitedly, still holding my hand, “this is the best decision you could have made. Joining us right now means you’re getting in early. Very early!”

He finally released my hand and spread his arms wide like he was presenting something grand.

“Our company is going to grow. I can feel it! And when we do, you’ll grow with us!”

I nodded politely.

“That sounds wonderful.”

Inside, though, I wasn’t nearly as impressed as I looked.

Still, I kept smiling.

After everything I had been through over the past few weeks, I wasn’t about to complain. Not now. Not when I had finally managed to get a job.

I had gotten the job.

The thought repeated itself in my head, and my chest warmed with quiet excitement.

My little plan had worked.

Changing my hair, dyeing it black and using my original family name instead of Aldridge. It had all made a difference.

For the first time since leaving Julian, someone had looked at my qualifications instead of my past.

And the interview had gone smoothly.

Too smoothly.

I remembered how eager I had sounded during the conversation. I had probably shown too much emotion when he said they needed someone urgently.

Now that I thought about it, I felt a little foolish.

That must have been when Manager Raymond realized how desperate I was.

A small sigh escaped me quietly.

Of course he noticed.

Men like him were not fools.

Raymond leaned back in his chair, with his large fingers tapping lightly on the desk.

“So,” he said with a cheerful tone, “as we discussed earlier, you’ll be joining us as our financial consultant.”

“Yes,” I replied.

“Your qualifications are excellent. Honestly, I was surprised someone with your background applied to a company like ours.”

I smiled awkwardly.

“Well… everyone has to start somewhere.”

“That’s true,” he laughed.

Then his tone shifted slightly.

“As for your salary…”

I already knew what he was going to say, but hearing it still made my stomach tighten.

“We are still a startup,” he continued, folding his hands together. “Our resources are limited at the moment. So the salary will be a bit… modest.”

Modest was a generous way to describe it. It was actually below minimum wage. But I kept my smile.

“I understand,” I said calmly.

Raymond watched my face closely, probably expecting me to complain.

When I didn’t, he nodded approvingly.

“However,” he added quickly, “there is also the matter of company shares.”

“Yes.”

“We will be giving you three percent equity in the company.”

Three percent.

At the moment, that amount was almost worthless.

The company barely had investors, and according to my quick research, they were struggling financially.

But shares were still shares.

And if the company ever succeeded, those shares could become something valuable.

I gave a polite nod.

“That sounds fair.”

Raymond looked pleased.

“Excellent! I knew you would understand the long-term value.”

Inside, I almost laughed. Long-term value. Right now, I was simply happy to have a job.

After weeks of rejection, I wasn’t in a position to be picky.

Raymond opened a drawer and pulled out a thick file before sliding it across the desk toward me.

“Here,” he said.

I picked it up and looked at the label.

Financial Reports.

“Our current situation,” he explained, leaning forward slightly, “is… complicated.”

“I expected that,” I replied.

He chuckled.

“Well, at least you’re honest.”

He pointed at the file.

“That contains everything you need to know about our finances, investments, and ongoing projects. Your job is to review everything and figure out how we can stabilize our position.”

I nodded slowly.

“I’ll look into it carefully.”

“Good,” he said. “Because right now we need someone who can clean up the numbers and help us attract serious investors.”

“I understand.”

He stood up again and clapped his hands once.

“Oh! One more thing.”

“Yes?”

“You’ll be starting tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes,” he said quickly. “We don’t have the luxury of waiting around.”

I nodded without hesitation.

“That’s fine with me.”

“Excellent!”

He looked relieved.

“I like your attitude, Miss Moretti. Hardworking people are exactly what this company needs.”

I gathered the file and stood up.

“Thank you for the opportunity, Manager Raymond.”

“You’re welcome,” he replied warmly. “And welcome to the team.”

A few minutes later, I stepped outside the building.

The afternoon sun was bright, and I blinked as the light hit my eyes.

I turned around and looked up at the structure.

It wasn’t a huge office tower. In fact, it was only one floor in a shared building. Other small companies rented the rest of the space.

Compared to the massive corporate headquarters I used to work in, this place looked almost insignificant.

But as I stared at it, something stirred inside my chest.

A bit of ambition and hope. This place might be small. But it was mine. And my chance to start again.

My chance to prove that I could succeed without Julian.

I tightened my grip on the file under my arm.

“This is it,” I whispered to myself.

A slow smile spread across my face. I was going to make this work. No matter what it took.

This small company would become my breakthrough.

Confession Beneath the Cold SkyEmilia’s POVCentennial Park was quieter than usual. The cold air lingered heavily, brushing against my skin in soft, biting waves. The trees stood tall and bare, with their branches swaying gently as the wind passed through them. A thin layer of frost clung to the grass, shimmering faintly under the pale afternoon light. It was the kind of weather that should have made anyone uncomfortable, eager to leave and find warmth. But I stayed.Seated on the park bench, I folded my arms slightly, with my breath visible in the air as I exhaled. People passed by occasionally, bundled up in thick coats, their footsteps crunching softly against the ground. The world felt distant, and muted. And yet, my heart felt anything but calm. The past few days had been… different.I lowered my gaze, my fingers lightly brushing against the edge of my skirt as my thoughts wandered.Different… in a way I never expected. It hadn’t been anything dramatic. No grand gestures. No ove

    Whispers and Rumours
Emilia’s POVI arrived at the office earlier than usual that morning. The building was quieter, the usual buzz not yet in full swing, but even then, I could already feel it—the shift in atmosphere. The moment I stepped in, heads turned. Conversations that had been flowing moments ago seemed to stutter, lower, then resume in hushed tones.I walked past them like I didn’t notice, with my heels clicking steadily against the floor.Ignore them.I didn’t need anyone to tell me what was going on. The memory of yesterday flashed briefly in my mind—Theodore calling me out in front of everyone. Not everyone had left the auditorium at that time. Some had stayed back… and of course, they had seen.“Did you see her—”“She was the one the boss called—”“I heard she got suspended—”“Or promoted…”The whispers brushed past me like wind. I kept my expression blank, my posture straight.Let them talk.Still, I couldn’t deny the slight tightening in my chest.Pushing open my offi

A Moment of CalmEmilia's POV"Goodnight, Emilia," Theodore said with a warm smile, his voice gentle but carrying an undeniable sense of sincerity. He paused by his car, looking at me for a moment longer than necessary."Goodnight, Theodore," I replied, giving him a small but polite wave as he slid into his car. He started the engine, and I watched as the tail lights of his vehicle slowly disappeared into the distance.Once he was gone, I allowed myself to breathe a sigh of relief I didn’t even realize I was holding. The tension that had unknowingly been building up in me seemed to dissolve as his car became a mere speck of light in the distance. I’d been so focused on the moment, on what could happen next, that I hadn’t even realized how much I’d been holding my breath.I waved a taxi over and gave the driver my address, settling back into the plush leather seat. My thoughts were scattered, and I couldn’t quite pinpoint what I was feeling. For the first time in a long while, my mind

Lost and FoundJulian’s POVI sat down in the car, the cool leather of the seat offering no comfort as exhaustion hit me like a tidal wave. I didn’t want to be here. I didn’t want to deal with this. But here I was, stuck in this hellish cycle of meetings, phone calls, and endless pressure. Today had been a turning point, though — and not the good kind. I had lost a client, and I had no one to blame but myself.Gripping the steering wheel, I let out a long, frustrated sigh, staring at my reflection in the rear view mirror. My eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, and my face was drawn, more haggard than I had ever seen myself. It felt like I was suffocating, like the walls were closing in on me.How the hell did I let this happen? The problem was simple. I’d trusted Cassandra’s advice. She told me to make changes to the client’s portfolio, said it would bring in huge returns. And like a fool, I listened. Now, I was stuck cleaning up the mess, and the client was pulling out. I couldn’

The ApologyEmilia's POVTheodore. The same man I had humiliated in front of a room full of people. My chest tightened, and my mind went blank. Why was he calling me over? What could he possibly want after what I did to him?The auditorium, once bustling with energy, now felt suffocating. The emptiness of the space mirrored the emptiness I felt inside. Raymond had already made his exit, leaving me to face the inevitable.I turned to glance at him, hoping for some form of reassurance, but his smug smile only intensified my anxiety. He was leaving me alone with the storm I had created.I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. My heart pounded in my chest as I walked toward the table where Theodore sat, my mind racing through a million scenarios. What if he fires me? What if he wants to bring up last night? What if he... hates me?I could feel my palms sweating, and my mind struggled to find any semblance of calm. He can't fire me. I own a significant portion of the company. I'm i

The Unforeseen BossEmilia's POVBy the time the afternoon rolled around, I was already heading towards the company’s auditorium, my stomach twisted into knots. The air felt heavy, every step I took echoing slightly in the empty hallways. This was the first time they were using the auditorium after acquiring the building, and I was strangely aware of it. A new chapter for the company. A new chapter for me.As I neared the entrance, whispers fluttered around me—most of them pointed in my direction. I heard the quiet mutterings and the glances tossed my way, and I knew exactly what it was about. Last night. I could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on me.Focus. It's over. The slap, the drink—it’s done now. Get a grip.I couldn’t deny that the way people were looking at me made me uncomfortable, but I did my best to push it aside. No one has the right to judge me anymore. It was his fault for acting that way. I stood up for myself.I stepped into the room, and immediately,
