CHAPTER 75: Club chaos

The nightclub pulsed with bass, and the low thrum of music vibrated against walls gilded with neon light, making the room shake with each beat from the music. Laughter spilled from the mouths of painted, scantily clad women draped over velvet couches, their micro dresses clinging like second skins. The hot, stuffy air smelled of perfume, sweat, and alcohol. And something darker: money, sin, and power.

At the center of it all lounged Luigi. The nightclub was one of the many that he had scattered across the country. He was reclining like a king on a throne, surrounded by a pair of escorts feeding him grapes as though he were Caesar reincarnate. He was grinning, drunk on his own arrogance, his silk shirt open to his chest, exposing the rows of gold chains that decorated his sturdy neck, further complimenting his fingers glittering with rings.

He was laughing at something that one of the escorts had whispered into his ears, when the doors slammed open.

CHAPTER 74: By Blood or Not“I don’t,” Olivia replied quickly, though her trembling fingers gave her away.He chuckled, the sound low and dangerous, like a predator humoring its prey. He liked seeing her so flustered. There was something about it that made her cuter. “Of course you don’t.” He turned toward his closet, tugging open the doors with one hand. “But still… interesting,” he added, turning immediately before she could read his eyes, and disappeared behind the doors. Finally alone again, Olivia’s shoulders sagged. She pressed her palm to her chest, her pulse unsteady, and exhaled heavily. She hated how he always twisted her words, how he could strip her bare with a single sentence, how he could easily upset and fluster her, making her a mess of tangled emotions. But the truth was there, clawing inside her chest; fear. Not just for herself, but for him. Yes, she was afraid for him. As much as she loathed it, he was the father of her child, her husband, and the thought of rais

CHAPTER 73: Worried about youOlivia stirred slowly, her lashes fluttering against the heaviness of sleep. It was the kind of heaviness that only came with a drug induced sleep. The world around her swam before it settled into clarity: the same room, the dark sheets, and the same dark scent. But this time, mixed with the scent of soap, faint steam curled through the air. A soft sound reached her, water cascading against the tile. The shower. Her heart gave a frightened leap. For one very agonizing moment, she thought it might be another intruder. She feared that another attacker had managed to slip past Elena and the guards again. Her hands immediately clutched her stomach, her breath trapped in her chest, fear prickling her skin as her eyes darted to the bathroom door. She would at least put up a fight for the sake of her baby. The handle turned. Her breath ceased. Finally, the door opened with an easy motion, releasing a rush of steam that curled out into the room. And there he wa

CHAPTER 72: A canary singsIn the center of the dark cold dungeon sat the intruder, stripped to the waist, tied to a chair, blood dripping down his jaw where the guards had already roughened him up. Dark, angry bruises were already painting an unsightly map on his body. Yet, his eyes burned with the stubborn defiance of a man who had already resigned himself to death. The guards, however, pitied him. He was yet to face the don. They had no doubts that his bravado would give way to fear soon, and he would begin to sing like a canary. Not very long after, Nero stood before him, still wearing the black dress shirt from his meeting with Viktor. The dark coat had been flung on the table as soon as he walked in. His sleeves were rolled neatly to his elbows, his wrist gleaming with gold. The expression on his face was a mask of control, but his molten eyes were darker, glinting with fire that mirrored the storm raging inside him. He was already simmering with rage after the meeting with Vikt

CHAPTER 71: Another attempt Olivia woke to the faint scent of cologne, dark, heavy, musky, familiar. Her lashes fluttered, and for a moment she thought she was still in the compound, still peeking at that mutilated body bleeding across the gravel. She managed to pry her heavy and weak eyes open. She was disconcerted when she found out that she was no longer in the compound, rather the velvet canopy above her head, the black silken sheets twisted around her, told her she was back in the bedroom she shared with her husband. It was at that point that she figured out that Nero must have carried her back here. After all it was his voice that she last heard before she passed out in the yard. Her throat was dry, patchy, and every breath was almost a battle, carrying the memory of the horror she had seen. How could she unsee what she had seen? It was even more shocking how calmly they had taken to such a sight. Almost like a daily occurrence. A muffled sob clawed at her chest, and she claw

CHAPTER 70: A message well received; a gift returnedThe abandoned boxing gym that Viktor had chosen for the meeting reeked of old sweat, stale beer, and smoke. The bleachers creaked with age, and the ring ropes sagged like tired veins. It was a fitting place for a meeting that reeked of violence. And it made the Italian mafia Don's nose wrinkle in disgust. He entered first, coat sweeping behind him, his presence like a blade cutting through the dim haze of the cigarette smoke that was swirling in the dimly lit room. It further made his disgust heighten. Nico followed at his side, silent, sharp-eyed, a shadow ready to strike at the smallest signal. He had been on viral alert since they found the body outside the mansion. At the far end of the gym, Viktor Sokolov sat like a king on a broken chair, legs spread wide, a cigarette smoldering between his fingers. His icy blue eyes tracked Nero’s every step, a predator’s stare, measuring, weighing. There was no friendship lost between him an
