Lorenzo's pov

"Please... have mercy on us, Boss."

The man's voice shook violently, a thin stream of fresh blood trickling from the corner of his swollen lip down onto the cold, stained concrete floor. His wrists were bound brutally tight with thick industrial rope to the frame of a heavy wooden chair. Beside him, his partner looked barely conscious, his head slumping forward against his chest, his face battered and bruised beyond recognition.

The entire warehouse was dead quiet. The heavy, metallic smell of copper hung thick in the chilly air, mixed with the damp, earthy scent of wet brickwork from the old structure. The only sound echoing through the massive, hollow space was the sound of their ragged, terrified breathing.

I rose slowly from my leather armchair, taking my time to smooth down the front of my tailored suit jacket. I walked across the room, my polished leather shoes clicking methodically against the floor, toward the long steel table resting against the far brick wall.

Neatly arranged across its polished metal surface were instruments of my trade knives of various lengths, heavy iron pliers, thick chains, and specialized tools designed specifically for men who proved incompetent.

I picked up a sleek silver dagger, turning it slowly over in my hands, letting the harsh overhead bulb catch its polished, lethal edge.

"You had one simple job," I said quietly. My tone wasn't

raised it was calm, almost conversational but it sliced cleanly through the stillness like a blade.

Neither of them dared to make a sound.

"The nephew of the Valenti syndicate," I continued softly, tracing the sharp tip of the blade with my thumb. "The heir who holds the physical ledger to their entire underground distribution network."

The first man lowered his head, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably under my gaze. "B-Boss... we swear on our lives, we thought he was the target.

The height, the dark

hair, the frame... in the shadows outside that club, he matched the file we were given down to the detail."

"You thought?"

I turned around slowly, my dark eyes fixing on him with an absolute, unyielding coldness.

"I don't pay you to think."

His entire body violently shuddered, the wooden legs of his chair rattling loudly against the concrete floorboards. "It was dark on the street! He walked out of Vespera right when the target was scheduled to leave! By the time we realized the mistake, he was already unconscious in the back of the SUV!"

I stared at both of them, my face entirely devoid of warmth or emotion.

"You brought me an innocent medical student instead of

the man I ordered you to take."

"We’re so sorry, Boss!" the second man suddenly wheezed, coughing up blood as he begged from where his head hung low. "Please... give us another chance! We’ll go back out tonight! We’ll find the Valenti boy and fix this!"

In my world, a single mistake didn't just delay a plan it started a bloody war between families.

It exposed vulnerabilities that our rivals would exploit

without a second thought. There was no room for second

chances. There was no room for weak, careless men who couldn't tell a high-value target from an innocent

bystander.

I turned my eyes toward the deep shadows near the entrance, where my right-hand man stood perfectly still, like a shadow against the brickwork.

"Marco."

"Yes, Boss," Marco replied instantly, stepping forward into the pool of yellow overhead light.

"Where is the boy?"

"He’s in the east wing of the main estate," Marco reported in a quiet, measured voice. "Dr. Moretti examined him personally this morning while he was still out cold.

Aside from the heavy dose of sedative and a few minor red marks on his wrists from the restraint straps, he’s uninjured. He woke up about an hour ago... screaming and pounding on the door."

I nodded once, setting the silver dagger back down onto the steel table with a quiet, decisive clink.

"Good."

The two bound men looked up at me, a desperate, pathetic flicker of hope washing across their bloody faces. They assumed my calm tone meant forgiveness. They assumed my quiet disposition meant they were getting off with a warning.

They were remarkably foolish.

"Take them away," I said softly, turning my back on them to walk toward the far end of the room.

The color drained from their faces in an instant.

"B-Boss! Please!"

"We can fix this! Boss, please give us one more chance!"

"Don't do this! Have mercy!"

Their desperate, echoing screams bounced off the high concrete walls as four of my armed guards stepped out from the darkness, grabbing the chairs and dragging them forcefully through the heavy metal side doors. A second later, the thick iron doors slammed shut with a deafening boom, cutting off their panicked cries entirely.

Silence settled back over the warehouse.

Marco remained standing exactly where he was, waiting patiently for my next directive. He had been with me long enough to know better than to speak out of turn.

"What should we do with the boy, Boss?" Marco finally asked, his tone completely neutral. "He isn't connected to the Valenti family. He has no strategic value to us, and keeping a civilian on the estate is a risk we don't need."

I walked over to the massive floor-to-ceiling glass window at the edge of the warehouse floor, looking out over the distant, glowing skyline of Rome.

The kid wasn't the target. He had nothing to do with the war currently brewing in the city's underbelly. He was just a regular student a young guy who happened to walk out of a club at the absolute worst second possible.

Yet, by pure bad luck, fate had thrown him directly into the center of my world.

If I released him right now, he could run straight to the police or describe my men to the wrong people in the city. But if I kept him locked up in my house, I was holding a completely innocent civilian hostage.

Neither option sat well with me.

I stood there in silence for a long time, watching the city lights flicker against the night sky, weighing the consequences of every move. Finally, I turned back toward Marco.

"Bring him to my study."

Marco bowed his head respectfully. "Right away, Boss."

As Marco slipped out through the side entrance, I leaned back against the window frame, staring at my own reflection in the dark glass.

For the first time in years, a variable had entered my territory that I hadn't calculated for. And in just a few minutes, I was going to stand face-to-face with a terrified stranger whose entire life was now hanging entirely in my hands.

Lorenzo's POVI hadn’t slept all night.Every time I closed my eyes, I kept seeing the same thing over and over again. Julian standing helpless in the garden. The sudden loud crack of a gunshot. The dirt flying up right by his feet.If my men had gotten there just a few seconds later...I forced the thought out of my head and clenched my jaw. I couldn't afford to get distracted right now. Not over a feeling."Boss." Marco stepped into my office, looking grim."What did you find?" I asked, leaning over the desk."We checked everyone who had access to the security room yesterday.""How many?""Six people," Marco said. "Four guards, the guy in charge of security, and..." He stopped, taking a breath. "...Tina."I froze. "Tina?""She has the keycard to the main security room."I stared at him, my eyes narrowing. "Tina has been with my family for thirty years, Marco. She practically raised me after my father died.""I know, Boss.""Then find another answer."Marco hesitated, but nodded. "We

My entire body ached with a relentless, throbbing intensity.I opened my eyes slowly and immediately regretted the decision. "Ahhh..." I groaned softly into the quiet room. Every single muscle in my arms felt violently sore, especially my shoulders and upper back. I rolled onto my side, burying my face deep into the soft pillow. "Never again."Yesterday’s brutal self-defense session with Marco had officially destroyed every physical function I possessed. I had barely slept five hours because every single time I shifted on the mattress, a new muscle screamed in protest. After forcing myself out of bed and throwing on a fresh shirt, I limped down the grand staircase to the dining room for breakfast.Tina, the estate's head housekeeper, was already arranging fresh fruit near the table. The moment her warm eyes landed on me, she smiled. "Good morning, sweetheart.""Good morning, Tina," I mumbled, slowly pulling out a heavy dining chair and lowering myself onto it like an old man.Tin

A gentle knock on the heavy door pulled me out of a light, restless sleep."Rise and shine, sunshine."Marco’s voice echoed from the hallway before he pushed the oak door open. A young staff member followed right behind him, carrying a silver tray stacked with fresh pastries, fruit, and coffee.I rubbed my dry eyes, sitting up on the edge of the mattress. "Good morning," I yawned, smoothing down my messy hair. "What’s going on?"Marco folded his broad arms across his chest, leaning casually against the doorframe. "What’s going on is that if you want to survive what’s coming outside these walls, you need to learn how to defend yourself."I frowned, looking at him in utter disbelief. "Defend myself? I’m a medical student, Marco. I hold scalpels, not weapons.""Well, today is your first day of training," Marco replied smoothly, nodding toward the tray. "Freshen up, eat your breakfast, and someone will lead you down to the training room."He pointed toward the tall wooden wardrobe near

The guards escorted me back to the plush guest suite, pulling the heavy door shut until the deadbolt clicked into place. Once again, I was entirely alone. I sank onto the edge of the oversized bed, burying my face in my trembling hands as every single word Lorenzo Rossi had spoken replayed in my mind like a nightmare on loop."If I let you leave... you won't survive a week."His low, gravelly voice echoed through the silence of the room. I squeezed my eyes shut, my pulse hammering wildly in my throat. Who on earth would want me dead? Why would any violent crime syndicate target a nobody like me? None of it made a single shred of sense. I had spent my entire life buried in medical textbooks, studying human anatomy, trying to help people. I was just an ordinary student trying to get through school, and now I was trapped in the crossfire of a war I knew nothing about.A quiet, tentative knock against the heavy oak door shattered the oppressive silence. The door creaked open, and

  • NOT PART OF THE PLAN   CHAPTER SIX

Julian's pov The man slowly turned to face me, taking his time as if I were nothing more than an unexpected interruption to his evening. For a few agonizingly long seconds, he said absolutely nothing. His piercing gray eyes remained fixed on me, studying every single detail of my face as though he were trying to solve a complex puzzle. He looked at my messy hair, my barefoot stance, and the visible tremble in my hands. The heavy, suffocating silence in the room made my anxiety skyrocket. My palms grew slick with nervous sweat, and the rushing sound of my own heartbeat hammered violently in my ears. Finally, he gestured slightly toward a sleek leather armchair in front of his massive mahogany desk. "Sit." His voice was surprisingly low and calm, yet it carried an underlying weight of supreme authority that made refusal feel impossible. I hesitated for a fraction of a second, my eyes darting toward the locked double doors behind me, before I slowly sank into the chair opposit

  • NOT PART OF THE PLAN   CHAPTER FIVE

Julian's pov I woke to the heavy, unmistakable sound of a brass lock clicking open. My eyes flew open instantly. My heart slammed violently against my ribs like a trapped bird, and I scrambled back across the massive mattress, dragging myself all the way to the headboard. Fear gripped my throat so tightly I could barely draw a breath into my lungs. My mind was racing I had no idea what was about to happen, but trapped in a place like this, I knew it couldn't be anything good. Curling myself tightly into the far corner of the plush bed, I wrapped my arms around my knees, shivering as I braced for whatever was about to step through that heavy door. Two broad-shouldered men dressed in tailored black suits walked quietly into the room. Their expressions were stoic, unreadable, and completely void of warmth. One of them stopped at the foot of the bed, his cold dark eyes sweeping over my terrified state without a sliver of sympathy. "The Boss wants to see you," he said in a flat
