There are two things I love in life. One, Fridays, Two, Trading insults with Clumsy Nancy. Her name’s actually Nancy Gilbert, but I don’t even care. Nancy, she’s sarcastic, prickly and looks at me irritatingly like I’m the gum stuck to her shoe. But I find her interesting, to an extent. I love how she hates me, and I love how she knows that I love how she hates me. But I hate how audacious she is, how she tells me to shut up to my face. No sugarcoating, no fake smiles. This morning, she wore a coat that made her look like the dwarf from Game of Thrones. I don’t just get this girl. Sometimes, she's pretty dull; other times, she’s like the ‘terror’ in the popular line from GOT, ‘For the night is dark and full of TERRORS’.
Anyways, I love staring at her cause it upsets her, and that’s my favorite part of life, the days I live for. She catches me staring and walks up to me, and then hands me a glue stick. At first, I thought the iconic Clumsy Nancy was going to ask for help, but not until she opened her fraudulent mouth. ‘Here, glue your eyes back to their sockets. She says and moves back to her post. Iconic, I admit. I watch her move back to her computer with her face squeezed like a bag of burritos. I lean back in my chair, watching her evil fingers fly over the keyboard. My life is boring, all I do is work, play basketball in my free time, hit the gym and search the internet for some good insults and comebacks so I never run out of what to say and lose a fight to Nancy. I’d rather lick a dog’s puke. “Alaric,” Steve calls from the next cubicle. “Pancakes after work?” I shrug, “Maybe.” Steve is a chill person, one of those unproblematic guys who only care about eating and farting without making any sound. The office is busy today. Phones ringing, printers printing, Nancy-Clumsying and answering calls with that professional tone that still sounds like she's annoyed. She doesn't look up at me once, which is annoying. Not like I want her attention or I like it. Fine! I like it. But that’s just because I can’t annoy her without having her attention. I remember the first week she joined the company. She dropped coffee on my shoes and didn't even apologise properly, she just said, "At least they're black, you can just pretend it's a new design." I want to call her ugly, but that would be a big lie. "Hey, Ric." I turn, it's Jeffery from the commercials department. "The boss wants to see your project team in five." I nod as soon as he walks away, and I glance over at Nancy. She's already packing her notes into a folder. Sly bitch, always wants to be a step ahead of me. We ended up walking to the boss's office at the same time; I made sure of that. I try to match her pace close enough for her to notice me, but she ignores me. "You look tired, Clums. Not sleeping well, or is it just your face?" "I'm not your mirror, Ric". She says and increases her pace. I smirk at her comeback, I didn't expect her to escalate at this time of the day. "You're learning, Clumsy Nancy," I say, stuffing both hands in my pockets as I keep up with her pace. "Soon, you'll be half as good as me". She doesn't respond. Instead, she keeps her head high and walks faster, and I almost burst out laughing. The hallway to the boss's office is packed with framed pictures of past projects, a reception desk and perfectly furnished rooms. Nancy glances at the designs as we pass. I know she loves designs. She's annoyingly good at her job. We reach the metal door of the office at the same time, and I step ahead to hold it open for her. Not because I'm a gentleman, but because I want to see that disgusted look on her face when I pretend to be one. She walks through without saying thank you, predictable. Mr Gray was already seated at his sleek mahogany desk. "Alaric, Nancy, welcome. Sit". Nancy takes the chair farthest from me, but you can't take a man's dream from him. I pull my chair closer to her than necessary before sitting. I hear her sigh, and it warms my heart. "I've assigned you both to work together as lead coordinators. I expect constant communication, shared responsibilities and no distractions whatsoever." The boss addressed us. He throws us a glance. "Yes, sir," Nancy says crisply, opening her file. " Of course," I say, leaning back casually. "We make a good pair for the project, " I added. Nancy gives me a burning look, the type that could dethrone a king. "Your first client meeting is Monday morning. I want a detailed preliminary concept and timeline before then. Understood?" We both nod. The meeting lasts another fifteen minutes, most of which Clums spends scribbling notes while I mentally organise all the ways I'm going to annoy her during this project without breaking any rules. When we left, I made sure to hold the door open for her. She closes the door and reopens it for herself, and it makes me laugh. We walked back to our department, and I decided to test the limit of her patience. "So Clumsy, I was thinking we should have a team name. Something romantically professional. She looks at me, and I can see she's pissed. Okay, I should stop here. Looks like she's going to cry anytime soon. Back at our desks. She immediately dives into her emails and I spin slowly in my chair, stylishly watching her. She's typing furiously. Either she's plotting my murder or she's writing to her future self about this day. I lean over, "Want to grab lunch later to discuss strategy?" "I'd rather eat glue," she fires immediately. " Glue's not so filling," I say. "But it would organise some of your ideas." She throws me a look that says I'm a stupid fool and returns to her work.NANCY'S POV I woke up feeling unnecessarily lazy. I had expected to find Alaric by my side but he wasn't there, although the bed still reeked of his warmth making me smile stupidly. There was a note on the dresser saying,"Went out for a jog, breakfast is in the kitchen." At the thought of breakfast, my stomach made a really loud noise as if it had problems. I was thankful that he really wasn't here. I said a short prayer, hoping that nothing bad like last time would happen. Everything felt perfect, until my mind drifted towards what Alaric had said last night."Go to a party with me."How was I supposed to refuse him? He looked really expectant and it made me feel guilty. But, if you think I'm a clutz then you haven't seen me at parties. It feels like my bad luck increases by a 100%. One time, when the company's boss threw a birthday party for himself; first of all, I showed up dressed like a dinosaur, thinking it was a costume party and my tail bummed into the cake. Ric never let me
ALARIC'S POV I turned and tossed on the large bed, opening and closing the window every now and then but I couldn't fall asleep. I just wanted to hold Nancy in my arms.My grandmother had called me with an unknown number earlier and told me that she had arrived in the continent."Did you block me?? I've been trying to reach you for months, Alaric. You had me worried sick," she complained from over the phone. "No, I didn't, Granny, I didn't get your call," I lied. Long story short, she was on her way here to make my life simply miserable. I groaned at the thought of that.My grandmother wasn't a bad person, at least not anymore. Former mistress of Reginald Wealth who rose to the position of his wife after she sent his original wife practically running. She was nicknamed the Asian tiger in her day because of her shrewdness in the financial industry and her cunningness as well. She raised all her children to be disciplined and as cunning as her but unfortunately most of them died due
NANCY'S POV I found out that the Asian man didn't have Alaric 's contact or even his address. But I learned that his name was Eren, which should be a victory but it wasn't. He was really nice and since I had nothing better to do, I followed him everywhere he went. I even went to chat with the receptionist but she was colder than an iceberg. The building contained multiple high end apartments that looked like mansions on one floor, few people came by and went barely sparing me a glance.I got bored of Eren as he attended to the residents and decided to head back to the penthouse. I thought about going home or to the library, but aside the fact that I was obviously too lazy, I was a bit wary since Ric told me about Michael breaking into my apartment. I chatted Raya, while I took a sip in the Indoor Jacuzzi and after that, I just stood by the glass wall, staring at the clouds that were decorated in all streaks of pink and orange. It was beautiful, truly but I felt empty inside as I reco
I took off after I had dropped Nancy off at the penthouse I'd rented a day before. I was really angry, and I had to find myself a bar to cool off. It was already too late so I couldn't call Steve. Halfway drowned in alcohol, I heard a strange voice behind me. "Long time no see, Alaric." I only turned my head slightly, gazing at a man with short black hair and black eyes. He appeared with a woman who was dressed like a stripper. She looked lustfully at me like she had other plans for me, but I didn't pay her any mind."Do I know you?" I asked as I was not in the mood for any nonsense. I was already pissed off, but I kept my cool nevertheless."Don't you dare do that!" The man commanded. "Don't you dare pretend like you don't remember me. I know you remember every single detail." I raised an eyebrow at him, not even understanding the angle he was coming from. He gave the bartender quick signs, and he quickly arrived with a bottle of wine."You thought you could ruin my life, ey Ric?"
(NANCY'S POV)I felt sour as I looked towards Alaric. I thought about apologizing, but I felt like it wasn't the right time. He surely hated me at that point. He had helped me with Michael, and I hadn't even given him so much as a thank you. After what felt like an eternity, he pulled up in front of a really fancy building, allowing me to look around. I hadn't even noticed when we had entered the neighborhood. It was so quiet and had few people walking around, unlike my usually busy neighborhood. I looked towards Alaric questioningly, but his face was expressionless. I immediately took it as my cue to get out."There's a penthouse on the top floor, and all you'll need will be there. If there's anything you can call the receptionist," he instructed as I alighted. He sped off as soon as my feet touched the floor. I stumbled back a few steps due to the dust, blinking in surprise. Yeah, I guess I dug that pit myself. A tall Asian looking man was standing by the door."You must be Miss
Days passed by, and the office was boring as usual. To add to it, there had been no sign of Nancy since then. On a fateful day, after I had parted ways with Steve, I felt particularly good, my hands on the steering wheel and the song Reckless Love by Cory Asbury playing on the radio. I wasn't particularly fond of this kind of music, but it seemed like Clumsy was obsessed with it, so I decided to give it a try, and it wasn't so bad. I stopped at the traffic lights when I received a call from a friend, "What's up, Roy?" I said casually, as I leaned against the leather seat, watching the traffic meter count down slowly. "Been a while. I'm in New York for now, and I have plans to throw a birthday party for my girl. I will see you there, right?" The deep voice said from the other end. "I'd love to, but you know I don't really immerse myself in all these social gatherings, Roy," I said, watching the meter count from ten impatiently. "Oh, come on. Think of it as a great way to start
