Brooklyn's POV

My legs were not entirely reliable on the way to the study.

I walked steadily enough that nothing showed — or I hoped nothing showed — but the steadiness was the deliberate kind, the kind you manufacture when everything underneath is doing something unreliable. One foot then the other. Down the hallway. Through the door Patrick held open and stood aside for me to pass through.

I went in.

The study looked different in the morning than it had the night I had stood outside it listen

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 144

Brooklyn's POV"Daisy, arms up. Quickly, please."I pulled the yellow dress over her head and tugged it straight. She wriggled like a fish. Her plaits had come loose in the bath, so I unpicked them, brushed her hair with one hand and buttoned her cuffs with the other.Ten minutes was not ten minutes. It was closer to six."Why is everybody running?" Daisy asked."Because the guests came early.""Is Riley's mummy here?""Yes."She considered this. "She smells like flowers.""Good. Hold still."Down the hall, Emerson's door opened and shut. Water ran in his bathroom. Then nothing. I could picture him standing at the mirror, pulling his face into the calm shape his father wanted. I knew that face. I had watched him build it a hundred times.I did not think about the hallway. I did not think about his hand hanging in the air between us. I thought about shoes, and ribbons, and whether the good napkins were clean. In the kitchen, the cook was banging pots and muttering. Two maids rushed pas

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 141

Brooklyn's POV"No," I said. The word came out softer than I wanted. I pushed it out again, steadier."Nothing has changed, Emerson."The hope on his face did not disappear. It flickered, like a candle in a draught, and that was almost worse. I had hoped to blow it out in one breath. Instead I had to watch it fight."Riley is still your fiancée," I said. "Your father is still watching everything that happens in this house. And I still have a mother who needs the money from this job." I made myself hold his eyes. "Jordan walking away did not remove a single one of those things.""I know that.""Then you know why I can't stand here and say yes to what you're really asking.""I'm not asking you to say yes to anything." He took a step closer. The hallway was narrow, and now only a foot of air sat between us. "I'm telling you I'm tired."I did not move.I thought about the garden behind the library. The buzzing lamp. Riley's hand resting on her bag, and the word *sensible* in her calm voic

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 140

Brooklyn's POV"Fine," I said. The word tasted like metal.Riley's hand stayed on her bag a second longer. Then she let the clasp go and nodded once, the way a banker nods when a loan has been approved."Thank you," she said. "You are very sensible.""Don't." My voice shook. "Don't thank me.""As you like.""I will discourage him. That is all I am promising. I will not tell him about this, and I will not lie to his face about things that are true." I held her gaze. "If you break your word, I will make sure you regret it."Something flickered in her eyes. Respect, maybe. Or only calculation."That is fair," she said. She picked up her bag, walked past me, and disappeared through the hedge gap without looking back. Her heels clicked down the path until the sound faded into the evening.I stood alone under the buzzing lamp.My hands were trembling so badly I had to press them against my thighs. I had just agreed to push away the one person I could not stop thinking about, to protect a jo

  • Nanny To My highschool Nemesis    Chapter 139

Brooklyn's POVThe meeting spot was a small garden behind the old library, two streets from Westfield.Riley had picked it carefully. I could see why. Tall hedges on both sides, one wooden bench, a single lamp that had just flickered on in the early dusk. Nobody from school came here. Nobody from anywhere came here.I stood at the entrance for almost a full minute. My bag strap was twisted around my fingers so tightly it hurt. I had told Sawyer where I was going, and she had texted back three times in ten minutes. *Do not go alone. Send me your location. I mean it.* I had sent the location. I had not told her I was already walking.I could not think of one thing Riley wanted from me that would be good. She was sitting on the bench with her hands folded in her lap and her back perfectly straight. She still wore her Westfield blazer. Her hair was pinned neatly, her face calm, and she looked like someone waiting for a bus.She saw me and did not smile."You came," she said."You said we

Brooklyn's POVI did not answer. One second passed. Then another. It was only a heartbeat too long, but it was long enough.Jordan's face changed.I watched it happen. The hope went first, then the colour. His shoulders came down slowly, like something heavy had been placed on them. His mouth opened a little and closed again. He looked at me the way you look at a house you grew up in after someone tells you it has been sold.He did not shout. That was the worst part."Okay," he said quietly."Jordan, let me explain.""No." He shook his head once. "You don't have to. I just read it on your face." He swallowed. "I asked because I wanted the truth. I would rather have that than another comfortable lie. Even if it hurts like this."My throat was so tight I could barely push the words out."There was a moment," I said. "More than one."He closed his eyes.A group of juniors laughed somewhere down the far end of the corridor, loud and careless, and the sound felt cruel. Jordan waited until

Brooklyn's POV"Tonight," I repeated."Tonight."I stared at him. The corridor was quiet. Somewhere behind us a locker slammed, and the sound made me jump."Jordan, that is not forgiveness." My voice came out low. "That is a deal. You are telling me I can have you back if I give up the only thing keeping my family afloat.""I'm asking you to choose a better life.""It is not that simple.""Why not?""Because my mother's rent depends on that money." I counted it out on my fingers, because saying it plainly was the only way to stay calm. "Her medicine. The bills that are still sitting on her kitchen table. I can't walk out of a job in one night with nothing behind me.""I will help."I blinked. "What?""I'll cover what you lose." He pushed off the wall and stepped closer, his face open and earnest. "Whatever the rent is. I'll talk to my parents, or I'll find a way. You won't have to worry about it."For one second, I wanted to believe him. Then I looked at his eyes. They were kind, but

Brooklyn's pov "I'm really sorry, Mr. Weston. I can't work for you."The words came out before I could stop them. Patrick turned from the hallway and looked at me slowly, the way someone does when they're deciding how serious you are."Brooklyn." His voice was calm. "You are contracted through th

Brooklyn's pov "Move!"Emerson shoved past me before I could even process what was happening. He threw himself over Daisy and me, arms spread wide, taking the full weight of the branch across his back. The crack was loud. Then silence.I scrambled to my feet, heart hammering. "Emerson — ""I'm fin

Brooklyn's pov"Teacher f***er."I heard it the second I walked through the doors of Westfield Academy. Nobody said it to my face. They never did. Brooklyn's pov "Time to feast."I heard Emerson say — cleats still on, grass-stained from soccer practice, heading straight for the kitchen like the fridge owed him something.I stayed on the couch and waited. The silence that followed was deeply satisfying."What the — " A pause.
