The first thing Theo noticed wasn't the snow.

It was the silence.

He stood at the living room window in his socks, one hand pressed against the glass, staring into the garden as though someone had quietly replaced it while everyone slept.

"It's white."

Marielle looked up from her tea.

"What is?"

"The whole world."

She walked over beside him.

The garden had disappeared beneath a smooth blanket of fresh snow. Every flowerbed, every hedge, every stone path wore the same soft layer, untouched excep

Marielle woke to the sound of feet moving across the hallway. It was still dark outside, the curtains in the bedroom barely letting in the first grey light of morning, and for a second she thought it was one of the staff. Then she heard a small sniffle, followed by the quiet creak of a door. She sat up. Theo stood in the doorway. His hair was a mess, one side of his pyjama top had come untucked, and he was clutching the corner of his pillow in one hand. He looked half asleep.“Mommy?”Marielle pushed the covers back. “What happened?”He didn't answer. He looked past her toward the other side of the bed, where Grayson was still asleep.“I had a bad dream.”Grayson opened his eyes. He took one look at Theo and sat up. “Come here.” Theo didn't need to be asked twice. He crossed the room, climbed onto the bed and crawled straight into his father's arms. Grayson pulled the blanket over him without saying anything else. Theo tucked his face against Grayson's chest, and within seconds his li

Marielle found Grayson in the sitting room with one of the old photographs spread across his lap. He had been looking through them for several minutes, although he had not turned the page once. She noticed that when she came in, he almost closed the album.“Caught you,” she said.He looked up. “Doing what?”“Looking guilty.”“I wasn't aware looking at photographs was a crime.”“With you, I wouldn't rule it out.”A small smile touched his mouth, but it disappeared when she sat beside him. The photograph in his hands showed two boys standing outside the mansion, both dressed in football kits. Julian had one arm around his shoulders. Grayson looked about ten, maybe eleven, and there was dirt on one knee of his shorts.“You were tiny,” Marielle said.“I was normal.”“You were tiny.”“I was eleven.”“Exactly.”He gave her a look, then looked back at the photograph. “Julian was always bigger.”“Were you close?”“We were brothers.”“That wasn't what I asked.”Grayson ran his thumb along the

The house was quieter in the afternoon. Theo had gone down to the beach with one of the staff members, and Grayson had disappeared somewhere after taking a phone call that Marielle suspected he would later claim was “nothing important". She had finished her book twenty minutes ago and had no interest in starting another one, so she wandered through the house instead. She had already seen most of the rooms, but only quickly, usually because Theo had been dragging her somewhere or Grayson had been waiting for them outside. Without either of them around, she noticed things she had missed before. The house was bigger than it needed to be. There were rooms nobody seemed to use, shelves filled with books that looked untouched, and photographs everywhere, most of them framed in dark wood. She stopped at one near the end of the hallway because she recognised Grayson immediately, even though he looked nothing like the man she knew now.He couldn't have been more than ten. Maybe eleven. His hai

Theo decided Marielle could not be allowed near the water without proper supervision. He made this announcement over breakfast while she was halfway through her toast, and before she could ask what he meant, he had already turned to Grayson with the seriousness of a man arranging a military operation. “She needs lessons.” Grayson looked at Marielle. “Apparently you need lessons.” “I can swim.” Theo shook his head. “You can float.” Marielle put her toast down. “I beg your pardon?” “Yesterday you held onto the side the whole time.” “I was being careful.” “You were scared.” “I was not scared.” Grayson took another sip of coffee and tried very hard not to smile. “This is going well.” She pointed at him. “Don't start.” Theo climbed down from his chair. “Dad can teach you.” “Why does Dad have to teach me?” “Because he's good at swimming.” Grayson looked at his son. “You planned this.” Theo grinned. “A little.” By the time they reached the pool, Marielle had already decided that agreeing ha

Chapter 60: BonfireBy the time the sun started going down, Theo had decided that the beach needed a fire. He had apparently seen one in a movie and had spent the better part of an hour explaining to Grayson why a proper family holiday could not possibly be complete without one. Grayson had listened while Theo made his case, then looked at Marielle as if he expected her to settle the matter. She had shrugged. “He's got a point.” “You too?” Grayson asked. “I didn't say I wanted one.” “You didn't have to.” Theo was already running toward the staff member who had been setting up the fire pit. “Dad said yes.” Grayson sighed. “I really didn't.”They carried blankets down to the beach once the fire was burning properly, and Theo brought three sticks because he had decided they were going to roast marshmallows. Marielle had no idea what she was doing, but she refused to admit it. She had seen people cook over fires before. It couldn't be that difficult. She placed a small pan over the flames

Theo was awake before either of them that morning, which meant Marielle knew something was wrong before she even opened her eyes. He came running into their room with his hair sticking up on one side and announced that Dad had promised to take the boat out. Grayson, who had been half asleep beside the window, opened one eye and asked why Theo was yelling at seven in the morning. “Because we're going on the boat.” Theo climbed onto the end of the bed. “You said today.” Grayson rubbed his face. “I did.” “So we're going now.” “We haven't had breakfast.” Theo considered that for a second. “We can eat on the boat.” Marielle pulled the pillow over her face. “You created this problem yourself.” Grayson looked at her. “I know.”By the time they reached the dock, Theo had asked whether the boat could go faster than a car, whether fish could hear the engine, whether sharks followed boats because they were curious, whether dolphins liked children, and whether his father had ever driven a boat in
