Chapter Two.

Nathaniel’s Obsession.

Rosalyn placed a hand on her head and she took deep breaths. She had been on her feet for 24 hours straight and she didn’t think she had ever hurt more in her life. She was so tired that she didn’t even know if sleep would help her. She had just come out from the second surgery she scrubbed in today. She loved being Dr. Hunter’s intern, even if her body hated it after.

“Tired?” Dr. Hunter asked as he walked out of the scrub room. He saw her standing there.

“No!” Rosalyn said a little too loud, causing her superior to raise his eyebrow at her. “I have six hours more. I could go for another surgery. I feel wonderful,” Rosalyn smiles through her lie.

“Well, I’m tired, Dr. Mason. You can check up on my post-ops,” Dr. Hunter said as she walked with him.

“Okay,” She replied, in a way she was glad she wasn’t going to scrub into another surgery, but she didn’t want him to know she was tired.

“You did good, Doctor,” He said simply before he walked away from her. Rosalyn was left staring at him in shock. She didn’t know how to act after he had told her that. She watched him turn and wink at her before he walked around the corner.

“You did good, Doctor,” Rosalyn mimicked him, smiling to herself and ignoring the odd look she got from the nurse as she picked up the patient files. If someone told her she would do a good job at this, she wasn’t sure she would believe them.

Rosalyn did the post-ops and soon she was in the intern locker room, getting her bag and going home.

“Dr. Hunter’s favorite is going home already, ” Alyssa sneered as she watched Rosalyn put on her shoes. She heard the snickers coming from the other doctors beside Alissa.

Rosalyn thought of ignoring her, but Alyssa always managed to rile her up.
“There’s nothing wrong with being the best in your class,” A smile made its way to Rosalyn’s face as she saw the angry look that clouded Alyssa’s smug features.

“If you call sleeping your way to the top being the best in your class, then you’re even a bigger idiot than I thought,” Alyssa said angrily getting to her feet.

“Idiot or not, I’m still better than you,” Rosalyn said, taking her bag and leaving the locker room. She could not wait until this year was over so she could avoid being on the same shift with people like Alyssa. They had once been best of friends in medical school until Alyssa’s boyfriend wanted to sleep with her and she refused. Joseph, Alyssa’s boyfriend, ended up telling Alyssa lies about her and Alyssa believed every word he said.

“Hey watch where you’re going,” Rosalyn rolled her eyes at hearing Joseph’s voice. She had not been watching where she was going to and she bumped into him. The fact that they all ended up in the same teaching hospital, only seemed to piss her off more

“Sorry,” She murmured moving away from his steady grip. She ignored the sarcastic grin he gave her. Not that she cared, but Alyssa seeing them even staring at each other would make her life more hell here than it already was.

Rosalyn got into her car and began to drive to her apartment. She got home, threw her bag somewhere on the floor, throwing her clothes off on her way to bed. The minute she hit the bed, she crashed and fell into a very much needed sleep.

“Mom, I’m fine,” Rosalyn said for the umpteenth time. “Tell dad I said I’m fine,” Rosalyn said when she heard her dad fussing. She had just woken up from a long and refreshing sleep.

“Darling, don’t you think we should come to visit you sometime? You’ve been there for months now and we’ve only been to your apartment once,” Her mom said.

“Mom, I’m not at home a lot. I will come to visit you soon. I get the weekend off soon.” Rosalyn said to her mother. She had moved further away from her hometown after she graduated from medical school. She didn’t want her parents always coming to her home.

“I hope you’re eating good, Rosalyn,” Rosalyn heard her father shout. She rolled her eyes a smile making its way to her face.

“I’m a Doctor too dad, I know how to take care of myself,” Rosalyn said to her father. He was a senior doctor at their hometown hospital.

Rosalyn got out the cup noddles from the microwave. She promised herself she would get a good dinner tonight, but she was too hungry too even cook.

“Oh, darling. You know we’re only worried about you being so far away and all, ” Her mother, Lilian said.

“I know mom, but I’m good. I love my job and the hospital. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of. Everyone here is so nice, ” Rosalyn said, hoping her parents would feel better.

“Have you started dating now?” Her mother asked and she heard her father curse before he murmured “here we go again, ”

“No mom, but I will soon,” Rosalyn said with food in her mouth. Ever since she and Alyssa fought had mom had become even more concerned with her dating life?

“You do not need to be forcing yourself to date. The right person will come, ” Her father, Scott repeated the same thing he said to her every time.

“I know dad, thanks,” Rosalyn said. “I have to go now. I will call you guys later, ”

“Okay honey, take care. We love you, ” Her mother said Rosalyn could hear the smile in her mother’s voice.

“Love you too. Bye. ” Rosalyn said before she hung up. She sighed, she was glad she had parents that loved to take care of her but she wondered if they would ever let her do things herself. She had fought with them to move out to Nevada, and this was the best offer she got so she took it.

She turned on her TV and began to watch her favorite series as she ate her noodles. She began to think back to what her parents said about her dating. It never ever went well when she thought to go on dates. She either never liked the person because they were awful to talk with or they either just wanted to get into her pants. Also, most of the time she always had to leave her date early due to the emergency calls.

Isobel put the grocery bag on the table when she walked into the house. She met her brother at home which was odd. Rafael was never at home during the day.

“Hey,” Isobel said, giving him a small smile. She washed her hands and dried them before she moved to sit beside him.

“He’s so annoying. No one can do anything around him, ” Rafael said with a frown o his face.

Without a doubt, Isobel knew he was talking about their brother.

“What did he do this time?” Isobel said she was glad to be back home after the week she spent in the De Rosa mansion. She overheard Draven and Alfonso talking about it as she eavesdropped.

“He won’t let me go out. He said you called him and said you found something. He said none of us are going out until he says so. Who does he think he is?” Rafael growled the last part.

“Well, he thinks he’s our older brother, father, and mother. Where do you want to go anyway?” Isobel asked.

“That’s not the point. I don’t want to be taking orders from him, ” Rafael said crossing his arms around his chest.

“We’ve been taking orders from him for a long time,” Isobel said, getting to her feet.

“He told all of the men to keep me in here because he knew I would try to go out,” Rafael said.

“Calm down. I’m sure he’ll be back soon, you can tell him how angry you are, ” Isobel said, with a smile on her face.

“You think this is funny. Just wait until he sends you to grandma’s house again, ” Rafael said, a smirk making its way to his face even he saw the scared look on her face.

“He said he’s not going to do that again. He said the next time I go, we’ll all go there together, ” Isobel said with an unsure look on his face.

“And you believe him?” Rafael laughed out loud at her. “He only said that so you would stop complaining, ”

Isobel shook her head at him before she made her way to the kitchen. It was annoying having a controlling brother on one side and then one who thought everything was a joke. Then there was Angelo, who thought just because she was the so-called help she didn’t deserve his love or attention. He only wanted her on the side and she was never going to put herself in that position.

“No neither of you will be going anywhere, but to grandma’s house. She has been pestering me for a visit and I am just too busy now to go all the way there, but I will drop you guys off and come back to see things through here, ” Nathaniel said to both his siblings over dinner. He was waiting for the explosion and it came.

“What?” Rafael said, his voice rising.

“Do you have anywhere to be? Cancel and reschedule later. It’s too dangerous for you to be here, ” Nathaniel said, to his brother who had his mouth wide open.

“I’m not going over to grandma’s, ” Rafael said, with a scowl on his face.

“What can I do, Rafael? She wants to see her grandchildren. I can’t deny the old woman that, ” Nathaniel said his voice oozing with sarcasm. He was not in the mood for any of their tantrums tonight.

“As long as I’m not the only one dropped off there this time, I’m fine,” Isobel said, sticking her tongue out at her brother.

“I will not be staying there. I will not be going there at all, ” Rafael said, ignoring her.

“Oh, you will. I will drive you both there and drop you off, then I will be back to pick you guys up after I get the shipment, ” Nathaniel said. “And that’s final.” He continued daring his brother to go against him again.

Rafael only shoved his plate away from him. He got up from the table and left angrily.

“Is he always like that?” Nathaniel asked Isobel as they finished their dinner.

“He doesn’t like being told what to do, reminds you of someone, ” Isobel’s smart mouth said.

“It’s for the best. I’m only protecting him, ” Nathaniel said, wondering how Rafael would see it any other way.

“Well, he definitely doesn’t see it like that. He thinks you’re always trying to have the final say, ” Isobel said shrugging her shoulders.

“It’s a good thing I’m the oldest. We will all be going to grandma’s whether he likes it or not, ” Nathaniel said.

Isobel only rolled her eyes. She didn’t know how she would survive at grandmas again, especially with a grumpy Rafael. An angry Rafael was worst than anything.

“Yeah well, he better gets onboard and not give grandma any troubles,” Isobel said, she definitely didn’t want to listen to grandma’s persistent ranting about Rafael while they stayed there.

Days later, Nathaniel drove them both to a small cottage where grandma lived.

Grandma Linda was very happy to see her grandchildren. She had not seen them in a while and they were the only memory she had of her son and she cherished them so much.

“Oh, I’m so glad you’ve come with them, Nathaniel, ” Grandma Linda said as she led them inside. They each gave her a kiss on her cheek.

“Oh, are you not happy to see me alive, Rafe?” Grandma Linda asked, shocking them all.

“Grandma, of course, I am,” Rafael said, making his way to her side.

“Then why do you have that ugly look on your face?” Grandma asked she waved to the men Nathaniel brought with them.

“Ignore him, grandma,” Isobel said before Rafael could speak. She noticed Grandma had made a few changes around the house and she liked it.

“The house looks beautiful,” Isobel commented.

“Thank you, darling,” Grandma said with a genuine smile on her face. “I changed the colors in the kitchen also. I also made little changes to your rooms, ” Isobel couldn’t lie that her grandma looked very cute with the mischievous smile on her face.

“Everyone is staying for dinner,” Grandma said when she saw Nathaniel getting to his feet. “You will be staying the night Nathaniel. You’ve only used your bedroom once or twice,” Grandma gave him a disapproving look.

Nathaniel stalled not knowing what to say.
“I will stay the night, Grandma, but I will be leaving tomorrow, ”

“That’s good,” Grandma Linda said, “you guys should put your bags away. I’m going to get dinner cooking, ”

Nathaniel left early the next morning. He traveled to Florida for a week, did the job before he returned to pick them up. He took them out to the club to celebrate and even if it seemed like he was the only one celebrating. He didn’t care. He knew his father would be proud.
