HANNAH

I thought I was ready.

I’d told myself a hundred times in the mirror, practicing the smile until my cheeks ached, smoothing out the tremor in my voice like I was about to step on stage. I’d stood in front of David while he reminded me of every rule, every signal, every exit strategy. I’d even whispered my plan to myself like a prayer: If he thinks I’m weak, I win.

But when the restaurant door opened and Nico walked in—my stomach still dropped like I’d been shoved off a cliff.

He hadn’t changed, not really. Expensive suit, tailored within an inch of its life. Hair slicked back so sharp it looked like glass. The kind of presence that made waiters straighten their posture without realizing it. But his eyes—God, his eyes. They used to soften when he saw me, back when I believed in the lie of “us.” Now they burned. A little wild. A little desperate. He tried to hide it behind a polished smile, but I saw it.

“Hannah.” His voice carried like silk stretched too thin. “You came.”

SYDNEYVeronica liked to take meetings where the view could do half her talking.Glass on three sides, the city laid out like a docile pet, steel and light and order. IShe didn’t look up when I stepped into her office. She never did. She finished signing something that would probably change a stranger’s life, capped her pen with surgical precision, and only then acknowledged me with a glance that said entertain me or leave.“You’re late,” she said.“I’m early,” I replied, setting the bag on the edge of her desk like an offering. “Thought you’d want breakfast with your reality.”“Reality doesn’t come in a deli bag.” She slid her tablet aside. “What do you want, Sydney?”“To prepare,” I said simply. “For Hannah’s return.”The name landed between us like a plate. Veronica’s mouth twitched—annoyance or amusement, sometimes the same on her. “Still with this,” she murmured. “You’re obsessive. It’s embarrassing.”“I’m thorough,” I said. “And correct.”She leaned back, folding one leg over th

DAVIDI knew the second she walked through the door.Something about the way she moved—shoulders too tight, eyes darting before they settled on me—gave her away. Hannah was good at masks, but I’d learned to read her tells.“You went without me,” I said. She froze halfway into the room. No excuses, no quick story. Just silence. That told me everything.I stepped closer, jaw tight. “You promised. You swore you wouldn’t meet him without me shadowing. And here you are, walking in like nothing happened.”Her lips parted, but instead of guilt, I saw fire. “You don’t own me, David. I’m not your soldier to be kept on a leash.”The anger in her voice scraped against me, but underneath it, all I heard was danger. “You think this is about control? You walked straight into a trap. If Sydney hadn’t shown her face tonight, it would’ve been Nico. You would’ve been alone with him. Again.”Her chin lifted, defiant. “Exactly. That’s what I needed. He lets his guard down when I’m alone. You don’t see it,

HANNAHI told myself it was just one meeting. One more step closer to evidence. One more night of pretending.David would kill me if he knew. He’d warned me a dozen times not to go near Nico without him shadowing. But David’s caution felt like a cage, and cages were something I swore I’d never step into again. So I slipped out, coat wrapped tight, hood low, heels clicking against the pavement in a rhythm I prayed wouldn’t betray me. The hotel Nico picked was classic him—sleek, expensive, designed to dazzle anyone who walked in. Everything about it screamed control.I kept my head down as I pushed through the revolving glass doors, ignoring the shimmer of marble floors and polished brass. My pulse thudded in my throat. This wasn’t nerves. This was fury disguised as nerves. Every time I had to play the obedient wife, every time I smiled when I wanted to spit, it scraped raw against me.But I told myself: If he thinks I’m wavering, he’ll slip. If he slips, I win.I was almost to the eleva

NICOShe’s bending.I see it in the way her smile lingers a second longer. The way her eyes soften when I brush her hand, even if she pulls back too quickly. The way she doesn’t walk away right away anymore. She used to fight me at every word, every touch, every memory. Now? Now she listens. That’s progress. It’s small, sure, but all good things take time. And Hannah was always stubborn. God, she made me work for her even when she first fell for me. That’s what people forget—she wasn’t easy. She needed to be convinced, courted, worn down with proof that I was serious. And I was. I always was. This is just another version of that.I sent flowers after the last meeting. Not the generic kind either. Her favorites—white lilies, the kind she always said looked fragile but lasted longer than people gave them credit for. I remembered that detail. She’ll notice. She’ll remember the man who listened to her when no one else did.And the bracelet—delicate gold, nothing flashy. I don’t want her th

DAVIDI caught her the second she walked through the door. She thought she was being subtle, slipping her jacket off like it wasn’t shaking, moving toward the bedroom with that look she wears when she’s trying to convince herself she’s in control. But I’d seen her face in the rearview mirror on the ride back. The way her mouth trembled when Nico leaned too close. The way her fingers twitched under the table when he reached across to touch her hand.I shut the door behind us, slow, deliberate.“You’re playing a dangerous game,” I said.Hannah froze. Just for a second. Then she tossed her jacket on the chair and rolled her eyes like I was overreacting. “And what do you call it? Babysitting? Hovering every time I breathe? I told you this is what needs to be done.”I stepped closer. “Don’t spin this. I saw you. The way you almost broke when he touched you.”Her head snapped up. “Broke?” Her voice sharpened, her eyes cutting into me. “You think that was me breaking? You think I’m that weak?

SYDNEYI’d been trailing Nico for weeks, and he still thought he was clever. He’d tell Veronica he had a “late meeting.” He’d toss me a casual wave like I was nothing more than background. Then he’d slip into his car with that same impatient twitch in his jaw, thinking no one noticed. But I noticed.I always noticed.Tonight, though, felt different. He looked almost… lighter. Not happy—Nico doesn’t do happy—but there was a glimmer in his eyes, like he’d tasted something forbidden and couldn’t get enough. And that’s when I knew.Hannah.I followed him through the city, keeping two cars back, my hands tight on the wheel. The air inside my car was suffocating, thick with perfume and the cloying smell of cheap coffee. My pulse was wild, my stomach burning. When he pulled into the underground garage of an upscale hotel, I almost laughed. Classic. The bastard thought hiding his sins behind marble and concierge smiles would erase them.I waited. Counted. Watched every figure that passed. And
