Chapter 2 Carsick

Author: Violet Graves
Anton froze, but only for a moment. Very quickly, he returned to his usual cold, indifferent self.

"All the more reason for you to be understanding. You can imagine how awkward it was for her the first time. Even after I stepped in and finished the ceremony, the experience still traumatized her. Yes, the next eight times were staged, but I only did it to help her get over that trauma."

I closed my eyes and replayed the first time Lina was dumped at the altar. Everyone backstage was chaotic. Lina was still dressed in her gown, crying her heart out.

I kept consoling her and trying to come up with an explanation that would calm the guests down. At the same time, I heard Anton talking to his friend.

"You're going to take the groom's place, Anton? But what about Lina?"

Anton carefully adjusted his tie, smoothing out every last crease. "You know, Lina and Emilia made a promise. Emilia's not marrying anyone until Lina does. If Lina becomes afraid of marriage because of this, then it's over for us too."

His friends began teasing him. Praising him. Lavishing him with admiration.

"You love your girlfriend so much that you're willing to sacrifice yourself just to help her best friend recover from trauma."

"When you and Emilia finally get married, I want the biggest reception platter."

They were laughing, but my heart went cold. It felt as if something had quietly left my soul. Yet I had no proof.

During the wedding ceremony, I watched them exchange rings, and my knuckles were clenched so tightly that they turned white.

My close friends kept telling me this was just for show and not to take it seriously. They said the same thing when the second time came, then the third. Eventually, they stopped trying to convince me.

Even though Anton would stay with me after the fake wedding, I had a feeling the distance between us was widening.

Lina slowly stood up. The tear tracks on her face had not even dried. "Let me have this one last wedding, and I'll never disturb you again."

With a gentler voice than I had ever heard him use, Anton said, "You can't say that. Emilia's still your best friend. Just call us if you need anything."

Then he turned to me, his tone instantly becoming commanding. "We're going to the bridal shop. Take that gown we were planning to use. That should be enough as an apology."

"I'm not going," I said coolly.

Lina's eyes filled with tears again. "I'm sorry! I shouldn't have held this wedding! If you won't forgive me, I'll give my life to you!"

She made a move as if she was about to rush forward, but Anton stopped her at once. "I already called professional makeup artists for you. Just stay backstage and wait for us. We'll be back right away." His voice was soft, as if he were afraid of breaking something fragile.

He then dragged me by my arm all the way to the car.

"Ow!" My right arm had once been fractured because I had rushed to deliver an urgent file to Anton. Ever since then, I could not lift anything heavy with that arm. Being yanked like this was the one thing I could not endure.

Still, Anton did not loosen his grip. He tossed me onto the passenger seat.

"I guess I've spoiled you too much, Emilia." He started the car and sped straight toward the bridal shop. "I'm helping her for your sake. You were the one who insisted she had to get married before you. You think I want to do this again and again?"

He was driving at 150 miles per hour.

I wanted to speak, but nausea surged up from my stomach and swallowed my words. He knew I got carsick easily, but he would not even roll down the window.

All for the sake of that gown.

  • Never His Bride   Chapter 8 Two Sides

In the end, Anton came to the wedding. My friends showed up as well. One of them sarcastically remarked, "If it isn't Mr. Schreier. Where's Mrs. Nine-weddings?""He gets on my nerves. If it weren't for Emilia, I'd be cussing him out right now!""It's Emilia's big day. Don't let this jerk ruin it.""Let's get in. I'm getting a good spot and taking all the pics!"Anton said nothing in the face of their mockery. He knew this was the ending he deserved. He had brought it all on himself. The doors slowly swung open. Though Anton had braced himself, he was still stunned when he saw me.Light spilled in from behind me. My satin wedding gown shimmered faintly, draping me in a soft silver glow. I held a bouquet in my hands, my neck slightly arched. At that moment, I looked like a perfect portrait. For a moment, Anton almost forgot to breathe. He had seen many sides of me, but not me in a gown.I slowly stepped forth. Every step I took made his heart beat faster. When I was only one st

The casual ease on Hector's face faded. In its place came something colder. "Emilia isn't the type to say everything she feels out loud, Mr. Schreier. But every time you and Lina exchanged rings, she would cry alone in a corner.""I was only passing through the hotel for partnership discussions, but somehow, I kept running into her. Every time, she was hiding somewhere by herself, crying quietly. And once the ceremony ended, she would wipe her tears, act as if nothing had happened, and link arms with you as the two of you went home.""You held nine weddings over two years. Even a stranger like me could see something was wrong, and you're telling me you couldn't? Or maybe you already gave your heart to someone else and were just keeping her around.""That's nonsense!" Anton roared. "We've been together for ten years, working our way up from nothing to a business empire! I'd never have a change of heart! I would never string her along. I… I just wanted to wait until everything was set

  • Never His Bride   Chapter 6 Not for Sale

Over the next month, Anton sent countless people to search for me. He searched too. Again and again, he drove through the city, hoping to catch even a glimpse of my silhouette. One night, he was working overtime. It was already midnight, and everyone had gone home. He rubbed his forehead tiredly and turned on his phone. That was when he saw a photo posted by my favorite bridal shop.In the picture, a woman in a satin strapless gown stood with her back to the camera. A massive veil covered her from head to toe, wrapping her in a sacred glow. The comments were all praising the beauty of the gown. But Anton recognized me at a glance. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, and his heart began pounding with sudden joy. He thought I still cared about him. Once, I lay in his arms and pointed at that shop. "I want to wear one of their gowns for my wedding."Anton stared at the photo and smiled foolishly. Then he grabbed his coat and rushed downstairs. Dawn had not even broken yet, but he was al

By the time Anton reached the entrance, the fleet was already gone. He stood there, taking deep breaths, trying to force down the panic rising in his chest. He told himself I had only taken that photo to make him angry. He convinced himself that was the case, as I knew Hector Gray was his sworn rival. He had never seen me talk to him before. There was no way we were suddenly together.Anton was going to call me from a new number when Lina hugged him from behind, still in her gown."What are you doing out here? Come on, get changed and let's talk to the guests. They're still waiting.""The number you have dialed is unavailable. Please try again later…"Anton stared at the screen. A wave of unease was crashing over his heart. "I need to go.""Even you're abandoning me now, Anton?" Lina said, her voice cracking like usual. She forced out a few tears. But this time, Anton rushed forward without even looking back at her.Anton drove around the city like a man who had lost his mind, s

The ninth wedding began, but the guests had long since lost their anticipation. Most of them were scrolling through their phones, only waiting for the reception meal to start.I had just replied to that message when Anton's assistant quietly came up to me. "Mr. Schreier wants you, Emilia."Back in the dressing room, Lina had already changed into that gown. She was smiling and spinning in front of Anton. The moment I walked in, she quickly tucked that smile away and replaced it with an anguished expression. Then she reached for my hand. "I'm really sorry, but the flower girls are stuck in traffic, and the wedding's starting soon. Can you help me hold my veil?"I pulled my hand back and wiped it with a tissue. "It's your ninth wedding. What does it matter if there's no veil bearer?"Anton frowned. "It doesn't matter how many times this has happened. A wedding should still be treated seriously. You wouldn't want something like this to happen to you."I looked at him, and then I smil

  • Never His Bride   Chapter 3 Unbelievable

When we finally arrived at the bridal shop, I rushed out of the car and threw up into a nearby bin. One hand clutched my stomach tightly. My face was pale as paper, but Anton did not even look at me.It was with great difficulty that I pulled a pill out of my bag and popped it into my mouth. I was about to go inside and ask for water when the name of the bridal shop made me freeze. It was the same shop I had talked about countless times. Often, I would come over here alone. I had always imagined that the wedding gown from this place would be the one I wore on my wedding day.Anton was always busy, though, so the wedding photoshoot kept getting delayed.I walked into the store. Inside the display cabinet was the gown I had stared at countless times. I let out a quiet breath and reached toward it. But Anton said, "Take the gown in the cabinet. I'm giving it to Lina."I looked at him in disbelief. The shopkeeper stood beside Anton, praising him for his good eye. "It's this year's la
