Chapter 1 Tired

作者: Violet Graves
I was about to leave, but the door swung open. Lina Kingston, my best friend, looked at me in surprise. Then, that surprise turned into delight, and she looped her arms around mine.

"You're the best, Emilia! Even got me my favorite iced americano! Thanks!" She stood on tiptoe and tried to kiss my cheek.

I took a step back.

Her kiss landed on empty air.

Lina staggered, the edges of her eyes going red. "Are you mad at me, Emilia?"

I looked at her calmly. This was how Lina acted with everyone, including Anton. Everyone always indulged her, so no one ever called her out, even when her closeness crossed the line.

Lina twiddled her fingers. "I never wanted to be left at the altar, and all the guests were already there. If Anton hadn't stepped in, I'd be humiliated."

The ring on her finger was shining brightly. My ring, however, was just something random he bought because he was too busy with work. It did not even fit properly, so I wore it around my neck like a pendant.

But the one on Lina's finger fit perfectly, and it came from the jewelry company Anton had invested in.

Anton frowned. He strode around Lina and stood between us. "Grow up, Emilia. She's already feeling down enough for being left at the altar. Stop throwing a tantrum."

Lina shook his arm and forced a smile. "Don't scold her. I didn't even shed a tear this time!"

I tightened my grip around the plastic bag. This was a farce. The chill from the coffee seeped into my fingertips and spread through my whole body.

I could not believe that my best friend and the man I had loved for ten years had lied to me again and again. I set the coffee down on the floor and looked at them. "Maybe you two should get married instead. I'm the third wheel, anyway."

Anton froze. "I'm doing this for you! What if Lina becomes afraid of relationships because of this? You wanted her to get married first. If she doesn't, when will we get married?"

He patted Lina's back like a heartbroken boyfriend, but all he had for me was icy indifference. "She never wanted this. Would you let everyone laugh at your best friend?"

"Laugh at her?" I nearly fell over. "Many of the guests are our mutuals! What about me? Ever thought whether they would laugh at me after you went through so many weddings with her?"

Anton did not manage to answer.

Lina's eyes had already filled with tears. She dropped to the ground and grabbed my shoe. "I'm really sorry! I must be blind! If I were a better woman, none of my boyfriends would've dumped me!"

She sobbed harder and raised her hand as if taking an oath. "I swear, I'll never get married. If I do, may God punish me."

Anton scooped her up and wiped her tears away. "It's your big day. An oath like that doesn't count."

A crying Lina huddled closer in his embrace. They almost looked like a couple that was madly in love, while I was a third wheel trying to ruin their relationship.

I loosened my grip on the bag, and the coffee spilled. Brown liquid splashed all over Lina's wedding gown. She screamed and lunged toward the stains, trying desperately to wipe them away.

"My gown! The ceremony's starting any minute! What do I do? God, what do I do?"

Anton's face fell, and he glowered at me. "You know how important weddings are to a girl! Even if she was abandoned at the altar, she should still finish the ceremony looking her best. Otherwise, who knows what people will say?"

I bit my lip as hard as possible to stop my tears from spilling. I never thought I would see the day Anton showed this much emotion.

When I once held my ruined dress design and cried until I could barely breathe, all he gave me was blame.

He said I had been careless about where I left my things, but now, he could not stop comforting Lina.

I was tired. Tired of this. Tired of everything. "You've done this nine times in a row, Anton. Aren't you tired of playing this part?"

In the end, Anton came to the wedding. My friends showed up as well. One of them sarcastically remarked, "If it isn't Mr. Schreier. Where's Mrs. Nine-weddings?""He gets on my nerves. If it weren't for Emilia, I'd be cussing him out right now!""It's Emilia's big day. Don't let this jerk ruin it.""Let's get in. I'm getting a good spot and taking all the pics!"Anton said nothing in the face of their mockery. He knew this was the ending he deserved. He had brought it all on himself. The doors slowly swung open. Though Anton had braced himself, he was still stunned when he saw me.Light spilled in from behind me. My satin wedding gown shimmered faintly, draping me in a soft silver glow. I held a bouquet in my hands, my neck slightly arched. At that moment, I looked like a perfect portrait. For a moment, Anton almost forgot to breathe. He had seen many sides of me, but not me in a gown.I slowly stepped forth. Every step I took made his heart beat faster. When I was only one st

The casual ease on Hector's face faded. In its place came something colder. "Emilia isn't the type to say everything she feels out loud, Mr. Schreier. But every time you and Lina exchanged rings, she would cry alone in a corner.""I was only passing through the hotel for partnership discussions, but somehow, I kept running into her. Every time, she was hiding somewhere by herself, crying quietly. And once the ceremony ended, she would wipe her tears, act as if nothing had happened, and link arms with you as the two of you went home.""You held nine weddings over two years. Even a stranger like me could see something was wrong, and you're telling me you couldn't? Or maybe you already gave your heart to someone else and were just keeping her around.""That's nonsense!" Anton roared. "We've been together for ten years, working our way up from nothing to a business empire! I'd never have a change of heart! I would never string her along. I… I just wanted to wait until everything was set

  • Never His Bride   Chapter 6 Not for Sale

Over the next month, Anton sent countless people to search for me. He searched too. Again and again, he drove through the city, hoping to catch even a glimpse of my silhouette. One night, he was working overtime. It was already midnight, and everyone had gone home. He rubbed his forehead tiredly and turned on his phone. That was when he saw a photo posted by my favorite bridal shop.In the picture, a woman in a satin strapless gown stood with her back to the camera. A massive veil covered her from head to toe, wrapping her in a sacred glow. The comments were all praising the beauty of the gown. But Anton recognized me at a glance. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, and his heart began pounding with sudden joy. He thought I still cared about him. Once, I lay in his arms and pointed at that shop. "I want to wear one of their gowns for my wedding."Anton stared at the photo and smiled foolishly. Then he grabbed his coat and rushed downstairs. Dawn had not even broken yet, but he was al

By the time Anton reached the entrance, the fleet was already gone. He stood there, taking deep breaths, trying to force down the panic rising in his chest. He told himself I had only taken that photo to make him angry. He convinced himself that was the case, as I knew Hector Gray was his sworn rival. He had never seen me talk to him before. There was no way we were suddenly together.Anton was going to call me from a new number when Lina hugged him from behind, still in her gown."What are you doing out here? Come on, get changed and let's talk to the guests. They're still waiting.""The number you have dialed is unavailable. Please try again later…"Anton stared at the screen. A wave of unease was crashing over his heart. "I need to go.""Even you're abandoning me now, Anton?" Lina said, her voice cracking like usual. She forced out a few tears. But this time, Anton rushed forward without even looking back at her.Anton drove around the city like a man who had lost his mind, s

The ninth wedding began, but the guests had long since lost their anticipation. Most of them were scrolling through their phones, only waiting for the reception meal to start.I had just replied to that message when Anton's assistant quietly came up to me. "Mr. Schreier wants you, Emilia."Back in the dressing room, Lina had already changed into that gown. She was smiling and spinning in front of Anton. The moment I walked in, she quickly tucked that smile away and replaced it with an anguished expression. Then she reached for my hand. "I'm really sorry, but the flower girls are stuck in traffic, and the wedding's starting soon. Can you help me hold my veil?"I pulled my hand back and wiped it with a tissue. "It's your ninth wedding. What does it matter if there's no veil bearer?"Anton frowned. "It doesn't matter how many times this has happened. A wedding should still be treated seriously. You wouldn't want something like this to happen to you."I looked at him, and then I smil

When we finally arrived at the bridal shop, I rushed out of the car and threw up into a nearby bin. One hand clutched my stomach tightly. My face was pale as paper, but Anton did not even look at me.It was with great difficulty that I pulled a pill out of my bag and popped it into my mouth. I was about to go inside and ask for water when the name of the bridal shop made me freeze. It was the same shop I had talked about countless times. Often, I would come over here alone. I had always imagined that the wedding gown from this place would be the one I wore on my wedding day.Anton was always busy, though, so the wedding photoshoot kept getting delayed.I walked into the store. Inside the display cabinet was the gown I had stared at countless times. I let out a quiet breath and reached toward it. But Anton said, "Take the gown in the cabinet. I'm giving it to Lina."I looked at him in disbelief. The shopkeeper stood beside Anton, praising him for his good eye. "It's this year's la
