Chapter 5

Author: Jojo
Evelyn turned and fled in tears, as though she couldn't bear to watch another second.

Alarm flashed across Nathaniel's face. He immediately released Rosalie.

"Wait here."

Then he hurried after Evelyn without a second thought.

Rosalie slid down the wall and crumpled to the floor.

What a joke.

All Evelyn had done was catch them together, and Nathaniel had rushed after her in a panic. Rosalie had never been more painfully aware of where she stood with him.

She struggled to her feet, straightened her rumpled dress, and stumbled away from the corner, barely aware of where she was going. The thought of what had happened there made her sick.

She'd barely stepped out the dance hall's back door when someone shouted from above.

"Someone jumped!"

Rosalie looked up instinctively. A figure was plunging from an upper floor, straight toward her.

Before she could move, the person slammed into her with a sickening thud. Pain shot through her body, and something warm and sticky splattered across her face and clothes.

As her vision began to fade, Rosalie caught one last glimpse of the person who had fallen on her.

It was Evelyn, the same woman who'd run off in tears just moments earlier.

…

When Rosalie came to again, the sharp smell of antiseptic filled her nose. She was barely conscious, but she could tell she was being wheeled toward an operating room.

Nearby, a nurse was speaking urgently. "Both women are in critical condition! Bleeding in the brain, multiple fractures... And we've just had a flood of patients from a major pileup.

"We're running low on blood, and there's only one operating room available. Whoever has to wait might not survive! General Farrell, which one do we operate on first?"

Nathaniel's voice was strained with desperation. "Save them both! Can't you send one of them to another hospital?"

"No. Neither of them is stable enough to be moved. You have to choose."

A suffocating silence followed.

Rosalie struggled to open her eyes. Nathaniel stood at the operating room doors, his jaw clenched. She'd never seen him look so torn, or in so much anguish.

At last, he spoke, each word seeming to take everything he had.

"Save Evelyn first."

Rosalie had known what he'd say. But hearing him choose Evelyn over her still hurt more than she could bear.

A faint, bitter smile touched her lips beneath the oxygen mask.

Of course he'd chosen Evelyn.

Then everything went black again.

When Rosalie finally woke, she had no idea how much time had passed. To her surprise, Nathaniel was sitting at her bedside.

The moment he saw she was awake, he leaned closer. "You're awake. How are you feeling? Where does it hurt?"

Rosalie turned her face away before he could touch her.

"I heard you outside the operating room. You knew I might die, and you chose Evelyn anyway. So why bother pretending you care now?"

Nathaniel went still. He clearly hadn't realized she'd heard him.

He was silent for so long that Rosalie began to wonder if he'd answer at all.

"Evelyn used to work as a coordinator for a troupe that entertained the troops. Then she got seriously ill, and she's never fully recovered.

"She was already so frail that she wouldn't have survived without immediate surgery. That's why I told them to operate on her first."

Nathaniel paused, then looked at Rosalie again. "I immediately arranged for a surgical team from another hospital to come here. They managed to get you into surgery in time, too. Rosie, I didn't abandon you."

Rosalie listened without a word, her expression unreadable. Inside, she felt cold and hollow.

She scoffed. "Nathaniel, if Evelyn was just a former colleague you were looking after because she was sick, why did she fall apart when she saw us together? Why would she go so far as to jump off a building?"

Nathaniel had no answer.

She watched him swallow. He remained silent for a long moment before finally speaking.

"Evelyn was once in love with someone who loved her, too. But they couldn't be together. She's kept her feelings bottled up ever since, and she hasn't been doing well.

"Maybe seeing us together at the dance hall was more than she could take. Maybe that's why she jumped."

Rosalie studied him in silence, taking in the sharp line of his jaw and the calm, unreadable look in his eyes. She'd never imagined he could lie so convincingly.

She remembered a conversation they'd had shortly after their wedding.

She'd been curled up in his arms, absently playing with a button on his uniform.

Half teasing, half serious, she'd said, "Nathaniel, you know what I hate more than anything? Being lied to. My father lied to my mother over and over, and in the end, those lies cost her life.

"If you ever lie to me, I'll walk away and never look back."

He'd kissed the top of her head and murmured, "I'll never lie to you."

And now, all he did was lie.

Rosalie had never believed she needed romantic love to be happy. It was nice to have, but she could live without it.

If a relationship worked out, she'd stay. If it didn't, she'd find someone else. And if that didn't work out either, she could still live a happy, fulfilling life on her own.

The moment she'd learned Nathaniel had lied to her, she'd known their marriage was over.

The phone rang for a long time before Rosalie finally answered. Her voice was calm, almost languid."Hello?"Nathaniel's throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. When he finally found his voice, it was hoarse and pleading, trembling on the verge of tears."Rosie... it's me. I saw the article. You're doing well. That's... that's all that matters. I… I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence stretched between them, so long that Nathaniel began to think she might hang up without another word.At last, Rosalie let out a quiet sigh. When she spoke, her voice was calm, almost serene. She sounded at peace, yet farther away from him than ever."Nathaniel, it's all in the past. I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine. I needed to let go so I could move on with my life. Please, let yourself move on, too. And don't ever come looking for me again."Before Nathaniel could say another word, the line went dead.He stood rooted to the spot, the rec

  • Never His to Keep   Chapter 30

Back at the house, with Rosalie gone for good, Nathaniel locked himself in his room. He drew the curtains tight, shutting out the daylight and the rest of the world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The room reeked of alcohol, and the air seemed heavy with despair. He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, clutching a yellowing photograph someone had secretly taken of Rosalie years ago at the Rose Garden in Nelmora.Beside him, a small recorder played a muffled recording on a loop. Whenever the tape ended, he rewound it and played it again. It was Rosalie humming to herself at home on a day when she'd been in good spirits. Her voice had a bright, slightly languid lilt, even through the muffled recording. Now it was a form of torture, each replay slicing through him anew.At times, a low, almost manic laugh escaped him. At others, he buried his face in his knees and broke into helpless, muffled sobs.Whenever the guards brought him food, he knocked it to the floor i

After dealing with an urgent military matter, Nathaniel raced home. All the way back, he clung to a sliver of hope he knew was foolish.Maybe, with time, the baby would make Rosalie reconsider.Maybe they still had a chance. But when he opened the front door, the house was eerily silent. Somehow, it felt even emptier than it had the first time she'd left.Once again, all her personal belongings were gone. On the living room coffee table sat a velvet box and a folded sheet of paper.A sudden sense of dread came over Nathaniel. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper and unfolded it.It was a medical record from a private clinic, confirming that Rosalie had undergone an abortion that very day. The reason was stated in cold, clinical language."Termination of pregnancy at patient's insistence."Nathaniel's vision went dark. His mind went blank, his ears rang, and his knees nearly buckled. He snapped open the velvet box. Inside lay the ring Rosalie had worn on their wedding d

As the shock and disbelief began to fade, a faint, desperate hope stirred in Nathaniel despite himself. He hardly dared let himself believe it.The baby would tie him to Rosalie in a way nothing else could.Maybe she'd think twice about leaving.Maybe he still had a chance to win her back.He looked at Rosalie, searching her face for some sign of hesitation. Instead, he found only cold disgust and unwavering resolve. Whatever hope he'd felt vanished. When Rosalie finally spoke, her voice was utterly devoid of emotion. Every word rang through the living room with chilling clarity."I'm getting an abortion. I'm not having this baby."Nathaniel's chest tightened so painfully he could barely breathe. He rushed over, crouched in front of Rosalie, and reached for her hand. His voice trembled as he pleaded with her more desperately than ever."Rosie, please, don't! This is our baby. It's all my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want, but the baby's innocent. Please, keep the baby

Nathaniel could see the resolve in Rosalie's eyes. She'd made up her mind to leave him, and something inside him finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed him.He seized Rosalie's wrist and dragged her up to the rooftop, ignoring her struggles and furious protests. The last of the sunlight stained the sky a deep, bloodred hue.He pulled her toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the flimsy railing, the ground lay several stories below. His grip tightened around her arm. His bloodshot eyes were wild, and his voice shook with pain and desperation. He sounded as though he were threatening her and begging her at the same time."Rosie! If you leave me... if you really walk away..."He pointed to the ground far below."I'll jump! If seeing me dead would make you happy, if it'd make you feel even a little better, I'll jump right now! You think I won't?"Rosalie was trapped against the railing, her upper body leaning dangerously over the edge. The wind whipped her long hair around h

Nathaniel's expression darkened, his eyes turning frighteningly cold.He barely spared Evelyn a glance before turning to the guards behind him. "Get her out of here! And don't let her back into this house without my permission!"The guards stepped forward immediately. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Evelyn and began escorting her out.Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, and she cried out, "Nathaniel! How could you do this to me? Have you forgotten how things used to be—""Evelyn," Nathaniel cut her off, his voice devoid of warmth. He fixed her with a piercing stare. "For old times' sake, I'll make sure you get the drug you need until you've fully recovered. But that's all you'll ever get from me."He paused, his next words carrying an unmistakable warning."If you bother Rosie again or push me any further, our past won't protect you. You'll be on your own with your treatment."Whatever hope Evelyn had left vanished. She stared at Nathaniel, realizing just how fa
