Chapter 6

Author: Jojo
When Rosalie didn't respond, Nathaniel changed the subject.

He took an elegant mahogany box from his briefcase and opened it.

Inside lay a matching emerald necklace, bracelet, and pair of earrings. The stones were unusually clear, their deep green color almost luminous.

"You once told me you'd been looking for your mother's jewelry, the pieces your stepmother sold."

He held the box out to her. His usually reserved voice held a trace of warmth.

"I asked around. It took nearly a year, but I finally tracked down the entire set at an auction house overseas. I managed to get it all back."

Rosalie finally looked at the jewelry.

She recognized the emeralds at once. Her mother, Jacqueline Hansen, had treasured them. Seeing them again stirred emotions Rosalie could barely contain.

She took a steadying breath and accepted the box, her fingertips cold.

"I'll take them. But don't expect me to thank you. I've got quite a gift for you, too."

Nathaniel frowned. Before he could ask what she meant, one of his guards knocked and stepped inside. The man leaned in and whispered something in Nathaniel's ear.

Nathaniel's expression turned serious. He stood.

"Rosie, I've got some urgent military business to take care of. I have to go. I've arranged for a nurse's aide to look after you. Get some rest."

Rosalie watched him hurry out. She knew exactly where he was going.

Urgent military business? What a joke.

He was just going next door to look after his poor, helpless sweetheart.

In the days that followed, Rosalie quietly recovered from her injuries.

The nurses wheeled her out for tests more times than she could count. Whenever they passed Evelyn's room, she caught glimpses of Nathaniel through the half-open door.

He was always at Evelyn's bedside, helping her drink water, peeling apples for her, or speaking to her in a soothing voice. He was so gentle and attentive that Rosalie barely recognized him.

Each time, Rosalie simply looked away without a word.

Soon, he wouldn't be her husband anymore. Who he chose to care for was no longer her concern.

One day, Rosalie returned from a round of tests to find her hospital room in disarray. Someone had rummaged through her drawers and cabinets, leaving everything in a mess.

Her stomach dropped. She hurried to the bedside table and pulled open the drawer.

The mahogany box was gone.

Rosalie caught a passing nurse by the arm. "Who was in my room? Where's my stuff?"

The nurse flinched. "M-Ms. Cohen was here earlier. She said she was your friend and had come to pick up a few things..."

Evelyn!

Rosalie's expression hardened. She released the nurse and stormed straight to Evelyn's room.

Evelyn was sitting up in bed. She didn't look the least bit surprised when Rosalie burst in.

Rosalie marched up to her bed. "Give me back my things!"

Evelyn closed her book at her leisure.

"Relax. I don't want your emeralds. I just needed an excuse to get you here. You're Nelmora's golden girl, Rosalie. You're rich, you do whatever you please, and you've got more men chasing after you than you can count.

"You can have practically anything you want. So why Nathaniel? Of all the men in the world, why did you have to take him from me?"

There was genuine confusion beneath the bitterness in her voice.

"I've already told you the truth. You know Nathaniel doesn't love you. He only married you to get the drug I need! So why did you still seduce him at the dance hall?

"Was it just to rub it in my face? To show me you can have any man you want? To prove you could make even someone as disciplined as Nathaniel lose his self-control over you?"

Rosalie listened to Evelyn's outburst, her chest aching so badly she could barely breathe. The sheer nerve of her left Rosalie speechless.

Nathaniel had only lost control at the dance hall because he'd been desperate to get Evelyn the drug she needed sooner. And now Evelyn had the nerve to blame Rosalie for what he'd done?

There was no point trying to reason with her.

"Give me back my things," Rosalie said.

Evelyn stared at her. Then, without warning, she spoke in an eerily quiet voice.

"I left them in the morgue. They belonged to a dead woman, didn't they? I thought it was only fitting to put them on a corpse."

"You did what?"

Rosalie was so furious she wanted to claw Evelyn's face off.

But she restrained herself and headed straight for the morgue. Getting Jacqueline's jewelry back mattered more.

The morgue was in the hospital basement, dim and freezing cold. The air reeked of formaldehyde and decay.

Rosalie had been afraid of the dark and places like this since childhood. Just being there made her skin crawl.

Even so, she gritted her teeth and began pulling open the cold metal drawers, one by one. Finally, she found the familiar mahogany box in a drawer near the corner.

Relief flooded through her. She clutched the box to her chest, as though holding it could somehow give her a little of her mother's strength.

Just as she turned to leave, a loud metallic clang rang out. Someone had locked the morgue door from the outside.

"Evelyn! Open the door!"

Rosalie rushed to the door and pounded on it, shouting until her voice grew hoarse.

Evelyn's mocking voice came from the other side. "Why don't you stay there and keep the dead company, Ms. Quinn?"

Then her footsteps faded down the hall.

"Let me out! Open the door!"

Rosalie hammered on the door, screaming for help. But no one came. Her cries echoed through the freezing morgue, unanswered.

Already weak from her injuries, she soon began to lose what little strength she had left. The cold and mounting panic only made things worse.

Eventually, her legs gave way. She slid down the metal door and crumpled to the floor. Her vision dimmed, and she lost consciousness.

Rosalie had no idea how long she'd been unconscious when she finally came to. Muffled voices drifted through the door.

The phone rang for a long time before Rosalie finally answered. Her voice was calm, almost languid."Hello?"Nathaniel's throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. When he finally found his voice, it was hoarse and pleading, trembling on the verge of tears."Rosie... it's me. I saw the article. You're doing well. That's... that's all that matters. I… I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence stretched between them, so long that Nathaniel began to think she might hang up without another word.At last, Rosalie let out a quiet sigh. When she spoke, her voice was calm, almost serene. She sounded at peace, yet farther away from him than ever."Nathaniel, it's all in the past. I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine. I needed to let go so I could move on with my life. Please, let yourself move on, too. And don't ever come looking for me again."Before Nathaniel could say another word, the line went dead.He stood rooted to the spot, the rec

Back at the house, with Rosalie gone for good, Nathaniel locked himself in his room. He drew the curtains tight, shutting out the daylight and the rest of the world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The room reeked of alcohol, and the air seemed heavy with despair. He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, clutching a yellowing photograph someone had secretly taken of Rosalie years ago at the Rose Garden in Nelmora.Beside him, a small recorder played a muffled recording on a loop. Whenever the tape ended, he rewound it and played it again. It was Rosalie humming to herself at home on a day when she'd been in good spirits. Her voice had a bright, slightly languid lilt, even through the muffled recording. Now it was a form of torture, each replay slicing through him anew.At times, a low, almost manic laugh escaped him. At others, he buried his face in his knees and broke into helpless, muffled sobs.Whenever the guards brought him food, he knocked it to the floor i

After dealing with an urgent military matter, Nathaniel raced home. All the way back, he clung to a sliver of hope he knew was foolish.Maybe, with time, the baby would make Rosalie reconsider.Maybe they still had a chance. But when he opened the front door, the house was eerily silent. Somehow, it felt even emptier than it had the first time she'd left.Once again, all her personal belongings were gone. On the living room coffee table sat a velvet box and a folded sheet of paper.A sudden sense of dread came over Nathaniel. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper and unfolded it.It was a medical record from a private clinic, confirming that Rosalie had undergone an abortion that very day. The reason was stated in cold, clinical language."Termination of pregnancy at patient's insistence."Nathaniel's vision went dark. His mind went blank, his ears rang, and his knees nearly buckled. He snapped open the velvet box. Inside lay the ring Rosalie had worn on their wedding d

As the shock and disbelief began to fade, a faint, desperate hope stirred in Nathaniel despite himself. He hardly dared let himself believe it.The baby would tie him to Rosalie in a way nothing else could.Maybe she'd think twice about leaving.Maybe he still had a chance to win her back.He looked at Rosalie, searching her face for some sign of hesitation. Instead, he found only cold disgust and unwavering resolve. Whatever hope he'd felt vanished. When Rosalie finally spoke, her voice was utterly devoid of emotion. Every word rang through the living room with chilling clarity."I'm getting an abortion. I'm not having this baby."Nathaniel's chest tightened so painfully he could barely breathe. He rushed over, crouched in front of Rosalie, and reached for her hand. His voice trembled as he pleaded with her more desperately than ever."Rosie, please, don't! This is our baby. It's all my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want, but the baby's innocent. Please, keep the baby

Nathaniel could see the resolve in Rosalie's eyes. She'd made up her mind to leave him, and something inside him finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed him.He seized Rosalie's wrist and dragged her up to the rooftop, ignoring her struggles and furious protests. The last of the sunlight stained the sky a deep, bloodred hue.He pulled her toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the flimsy railing, the ground lay several stories below. His grip tightened around her arm. His bloodshot eyes were wild, and his voice shook with pain and desperation. He sounded as though he were threatening her and begging her at the same time."Rosie! If you leave me... if you really walk away..."He pointed to the ground far below."I'll jump! If seeing me dead would make you happy, if it'd make you feel even a little better, I'll jump right now! You think I won't?"Rosalie was trapped against the railing, her upper body leaning dangerously over the edge. The wind whipped her long hair around h

Nathaniel's expression darkened, his eyes turning frighteningly cold.He barely spared Evelyn a glance before turning to the guards behind him. "Get her out of here! And don't let her back into this house without my permission!"The guards stepped forward immediately. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Evelyn and began escorting her out.Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, and she cried out, "Nathaniel! How could you do this to me? Have you forgotten how things used to be—""Evelyn," Nathaniel cut her off, his voice devoid of warmth. He fixed her with a piercing stare. "For old times' sake, I'll make sure you get the drug you need until you've fully recovered. But that's all you'll ever get from me."He paused, his next words carrying an unmistakable warning."If you bother Rosie again or push me any further, our past won't protect you. You'll be on your own with your treatment."Whatever hope Evelyn had left vanished. She stared at Nathaniel, realizing just how fa
