Chapter 6

Author: Bathed in Gold
Mommy and Daddy followed the police to the station to identify my body.

She had aged in just one night.

Daddy supported her, or rather, they supported each other, barely able to remain standing.

When the forensic examiner slowly lifted one corner of the white shroud and revealed my bloodless face, Mommy’s body lurched violently, and a hoarse, gasping sound tore from her throat.

She stared at me, not daring to look away for even a second.

The examiner read from the autopsy report, “According to the findings, a section of pencil was stabbed into the victim’s neck, penetrating as deep as the cervical vertebrae.

“There is severe blunt-force trauma to the back of the head, with fractures in the skull. On the forehead—”

“Stop!”

Mommy clutched the metal table, her body folding inward as if it were collapsing.

“I’m begging you. Please stop…”

The examiner fell silent.

Daddy tilted his head back, his lips trembling as tears streamed nonstop from the corners of his eyes.

He glanced at

Mommy slowly released her grip on Bella’s shoulders.“I could have… saved Cassie…”Bella stared at her hands, then suddenly began scratching at her arms with her fingernails until long bloody welts appeared.Daddy watched her for a long time, then slowly crouched down and wrapped his arms tightly around her trembling body.He lowered his head and cried in silence.“We’ll atone for this sin together.”The ones who killed me were three minors from the residential compound.Because they were under fourteen, they did not have to bear any legal responsibility.Mommy could not accept that outcome.Disheveled and hollow-eyed, she blocked the entrance of the compound, holding a banner and chanting that murder must be paid for with a life.On that strip of white cloth, my photograph had been soaked by rain, my smile blurred beyond recognition. She grabbed passersby by the sleeves and pointed at the windows of those three boys’ homes.“They can still eat and sleep. What about Cassie?

By the fifth ring of the doorbell, Daddy’s voice came from the entrance.“You’re quick to respond. I just called the police.“My daughter is missing.“It’s been more than twenty-four hours. You can file a case, right?”He spoke as he fumbled with his keys to open the door, his expression exhausted. The moment the door swung open, people poured in.Daddy immediately saw Mommy. He hesitated for a moment and said, “I’ve called the police.”Mommy didn’t respond. Then an officer approached, his expression serious.“Are you Cassie Tesla’s parents?” he asked.Daddy rubbed his hands together and nodded.“Yes. She had a fight at home and ran off last night.“Children don’t understand. They always scare adults by running away…”He rambled on, completely unaware of the sympathetic looks on the faces of the officers standing in the hallway. Then Mommy’s hoarse voice cut through sharply.“What happened to my daughter?”The officers exchanged glances and pulled an evidence bag from

Daddy looked grim.“It’s just a police car. Maybe it’s some other couple fighting.”But Mommy was uneasy.“Forget it. We should go look for Cassie.“That damn girl—just wait until I find her, I’ll scold her senseless.”Mommy ordered a large cake and sat in the playground in the residential compound. At first, her voice was soft, coaxing.“Cassie, come out and have some cake. Mommy bought you the biggest one.“It’s your favorite cream cake, really sweet. Come try it.“This time, the cake is all yours. You don’t have to share with Bella.”The autumn wind brushed past, and a few sycamore leaves floated lazily by. No one answered.Mommy took a deep breath.“Cassie, Mommy won’t scold you anymore, okay?“Come out quickly. Tomorrow I’ll take you to buy a new dress, even prettier than Bella’s.”But the playground still echoed only with the sound of the wind.I sat on the swing, looking at the cake. The cream glistened in the sunlight.Such a waste. It was so big, enough to la

The next day, my parents discharged Bella from the hospital. She looked drained and vacant. As Daddy folded the princess dress, his fingertips brushed against a patch of stiff, dark red fabric at the cuff. After a long moment, he called out to Mommy.“Come take a look at this… is this… is this blood?”Mommy leaned in. After a while, her face turned deathly pale. She grabbed Bella’s arm and began checking her frantically.“Bella, tell Mommy—where are you hurt? Let Mommy see!”Daddy also panicked and examined Bella’s other arm, even lifting her hair to check her scalp.Bella only stared back with hollow, empty eyes, letting them move her as they pleased. She didn’t cry, didn’t protest, and didn’t speak. They found no wounds at all. That blood did not belong to Bella.I drifted over and looked at it as well. That bloodstain must have been mine, from when that monster grabbed both Bella and me.He had seized my hair and yanked it back violently. In the burst of pain, I

Mommy stormed home in a rage.Daddy was still playing video games. When he saw her come back, he didn’t even turn his head.“Wasn’t Cassie at the playground?”“She’s dead!“That damn girl—when she comes back, I’ll beat her to death!”Daddy’s fingers never paused on the keyboard.“Don’t talk like that.“You’re at fault too. If you hadn’t altered the dress you promised Cassie to fit Bella instead, Cassie wouldn’t have run out in anger.”Mommy exploded at the slightest provocation and suddenly hurled a sofa cushion at Daddy.“How is that my fault?”“That performance dress was something Bella urgently needed! Cassie has so many dresses—what difference does one more make?”“When you put it that way, Cassie wasn’t wrong to say you were biased!” Daddy retorted.“Biased? Bella is younger. What’s wrong with letting her have her way? Shouldn’t Cassie, as the older sister, know better? “I spend tens of thousands every year on Cassie’s tutoring—doesn’t that count as favoring her to
