Chapter 4

Author: Rain Sounds
"I'll remember your kindness," Winona said.

I stood up and put some distance between us. "Ms. Lambert, please watch yourself."

Winona's hand froze, her smile fading. "Mr. Fuller, you're really not going to help me out?"

I didn't reply.

A smile crept across her face. "Sue only got the spot because she knows how to behave, right? If she can come into your office, why can't I?"

"Get out." I stared straight at her.

Winona's expression dropped. She looked at the door, then at me. "You're really not worried? It's just us in here, and the door is locked. If I walk out crying and say you did something to me, who do you think people are going to believe?"

She smiled again.

That smug look I knew so well had returned.

Lena had done this before. And now, Winona was doing it again. They'd make themselves look like the victim, and people would take their side and deal with the rest.

I didn't bother explaining or arguing. I pointed at the door again. "Get out."

Winona stared at me for a few seconds before undoing the button on her blouse. It hit the floor and rolled under the desk. Then, she dug her nails into her wrist, leaving red marks on her skin. She smiled at me. "Jeremy Fuller, you'll regret this."

It was the first time she hadn't called me "Mr. Fuller".

She stormed out and slammed the door behind her. Her hurried footsteps faded down the hall.

The office was quiet again. Winona's perfume still lingered in the air, and the button she'd dropped was still on the floor.

I plugged the recorder into my computer and exported the audio and video. Then, I copied the files to a black USB drive and backed them up to two Google Drive accounts.

Finally, I opened the safe. Dad's teacher ID card was lying next to the old newspaper. I put the USB drive inside and locked it up.

At 3:17 am, a trending story popped up on my phone. The headline said, "High School Principal Used Award as Leverage."

I clicked into it and saw that Winona had posted a long statement. She claimed I'd locked the door and threatened her. She said I'd used the award to pressure her and that she'd had to fight her way out of my office.

Winona also posted three photos of her torn collar, red wrist, and tear-streaked face.

The comments went crazy.

"Investigate Jeremy Fuller now!"

"I remember his dad was the teacher who harassed Lena back then. What kind of family is this?"

"How can a monster like this be a principal?"

"Like father, like son. Both of them should rot in hell!"

I paused.

The knife from 38 years ago had been sharpened again, and this time, it was pointed at both me and my late father.

I locked my phone and looked over at the safe. "Dad, not this time. I'm not letting them get away with it."

…

The entrance to the school was packed the next day. Reporters were out with their cameras, influencers had selfie sticks in the air, and some were already live-streaming and shouting my name.

"Jeremy, get out here!"

"Justice for Ms. Lambert!"

"You and your dad shouldn't be teachers!"

The security guards couldn't hold them back as the crowd kept pushing the barricades farther into the school grounds.

I entered through the underground parking garage. Two young teachers were waiting outside when the elevator doors opened. They saw me, their faces changed, and they quickly looked down and stepped aside.

A male teacher carrying a stack of lesson plans was halfway down the hall when he spotted me. He turned around and slipped into the stairwell.

The door to the teachers' office was partly open. I could hear Winona crying inside.

"I don't want to live anymore. I just wanted to teach. Why did he do this to me?"

Caden sounded furious. "How are we supposed to work with someone like him here?"

Dave let out a sigh. "I've already got the petition ready. We're asking the school district to step in right away. Want to sign? Here."

When the orientation ended, a young girl with ponytails and bright eyes came over to me."Sir, that teacher you were just talking about… Was it Mr. Fuller from the school museum?"I nodded. She thought about it and said, "I want to be a teacher like him."I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled. "Alright, remember this. Being like him isn't just about being kind. You have to be brave and clear-headed. When everyone else is out for blood, you have to be brave enough to ask for proof."The girl nodded solemnly. "I will." Then, she rejoined the rest of her classmates.I stood there and stared after her. I suddenly felt that what Dad left behind had never died. It had just been buried under the dust for all these years. Now, the dust had been cleared away, and people could see the light again.…I went to my parents' graves after that. This time, there was no rain, and the sky was blue. I brought flowers and a new photo showing students standing reverently in front of Dad's displa

The last thing I wanted was for anyone to turn Mom's pain into clickbait too. So, I gave just one interview, strictly for the school district. The host asked, "Mr. Fuller, do you still hate Lena?"I thought about it for a long time. "Yes."The host paused. I guessed she didn't expect me to be so blunt."I'm not going to pretend like I forgave her. She caused my parents' death. I hate her, and I think that's normal.""But I'm not going to let the hatred run my life. My dad was a teacher, and so am I. We don't pass down hatred. We teach the truth, rules, and our boundaries."My interview got everyone talking. Some thought I came off too strong, but others said I finally sounded like a principal.I didn't respond to any of them.I just went to work as usual. I went to my meetings and made my rounds.Sometimes, when I passed tenth Grade, Class 3, I'd still think of the phone stand Winona used to prop up on the desk. But the class now had a new teacher, and the morning reading st

Sunlight fell on the kids as they ran around, loud and full of life. They didn't need cameras following them around, and they didn't need to put on some image for anyone. It hit me then.I'd spent all these years hating Lena, the people who stayed silent, and the ones who stood by and judged without even knowing the truth. But destroying any of them was never what I wanted most.I wanted to keep what Dad believed in alive and finish what he'd started. He'd always believed school should be a good place, where teachers looked out for their students. Even when the truth took years to come out, he still believed someone had to wait for it.He died believing in all of that. I was still here. I wanted to prove he was right.…Six months later, the school redid its history museum. An old display board had been sitting in the corner. It read, "Professional conduct matters. Everyone should learn from past mistakes."There was no name underneath, but every veteran teacher knew exactly wh

"Dad, they said you were innocent." My voice was quiet. "It came too late, but at least they finally said it."The rain came down harder. I kept my head down, my tears mixing with the downpour. I thought I'd break down crying, but I didn't.I just sat there, as if I'd finally gone back to when I was seven years old—back beneath the school building, back in Mom's cold arms, and back to those days when everyone was calling us names. Then, I told that little kid I used to be, "See? We didn't wait all those years for nothing."…Lena's public appearance was outside the courthouse. She had a mask on, her hair was a mess, and for once, there were no assistants or fans around her. There were no cameras flashing, either.Reporters kept shouting questions at her."Do you admit you lied about Mr. Fuller?""Are you going to apologize to his family?""Are you going to pay back the money you made from your sob story?"Lena kept her head down. She didn't answer."Ms. Lambert, do you regre

When the news broke that Winona's account had been banned, her followers were still arguing in the comments. Some people pitied Winona, while some said she had only been lied to by Lena. Some even said that it was because of the trauma she'd suffered as a child that led her to frame me.I couldn't believe the comments. There were always people willing to find an excuse for someone else's cruelty because admitting they'd backed the wrong side was hard. So instead of apologizing, they'd rather say, "She has a hard life."But what about the people she pushed into the abyss? Did they have it easy?A week later, Winona had someone send me a letter in a thin envelope, with her messy handwriting all over it.She said she'd grown up hearing about some monster of a teacher who had ruined Lena's life, how Lena had pulled herself out of that mess, and how the Fuller family owed them both. And that was why Winona hated me, Westbrook High, and Sue.Winona had thought that as long as she stoo

"I didn't win," I said.Lena's eyes flickered, as if I had hit a nerve. Then, she smiled again. "So what? They're all dead. I've enjoyed 38 years of success. Jeremy, even if you prove his innocence today, your dad is still dead."She looked at me with pure malice. "You guys still lost."I didn't get angry. I just stared at her. "You're wrong. Dead people can't come back, but the living can clear their names for them. Lena, the good days you stole are over."Lena's smile faded. The police took her away, closing the door behind them.Everything went quiet. An exhaustion suddenly overwhelmed me. It wasn't physical tiredness. I'd been carrying this for 38 years. Now, it was finally over.Sue walked over to me, her eyes red. "Jeremy, if my dad were still here, he would be so happy."I turned to her. "Mr. Brooke did more than enough back then."She shook her head. "He still thinks it wasn't enough. He said that if he'd pushed a little harder or been a little more persistent, Mr. Ful
